Obituary - Vera Lea Hambelton Lickey

Vera Lea Hambelton Lickey of St. Louis, Missouri was born August 30, 1929 in Gainesville, Missouri the daughter of Albert and Winnie (Cochran) Hambelton. She departed this life on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 29 days.

In her early years, Vera was employed as a secretary for the Recorders Office in Ozark County and a waitress for “Skeeter’s CafĂ©”. Later she was a supervisor for Brown Shoe Company. Vera was a former member of the Church of Christ, Gainesville, Missouri and the Rebecca Lodge, West Plains, Missouri. She loved quilting, sewing, painting and most of all being with her family.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lickey; a son, Robert “Bobby” McGinnis; a daughter, Kathryn Estes; a granddaughter, Candice McGinnis and a brother, Warden Hinsley.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Looney and husband Jim, Harrisonville, Missouri and DeEdra Lickey, St. Louis, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, John Estes, St. Louis, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.

Cremation. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Lily Ridge Baptist Church, Gainesville, Missouri.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.


Obituary - Ray Bennight

Owen Ray Bennight, 82, Nevada, MO passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at Freeman West in Joplin, MO. Ray was born March 21, 1938 in Los Angeles, CA.

Ray was owner/operator of B & R Furniture in Nevada from 1974 – 1998. He enjoyed wood working, had a passion for restoring old cars and frequenting car auctions, and was always known to be hands on with family and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Betty of the home, he is survived by three daughters, Sherry Bennight, Evansville, IN, Cindy Bennight, Pierce City, MO, and Kathy Edwards (Jim), Nevada, MO; five grandchildren, Joshua Person (Sarah), Liberty, MO, Jason Wilson (Lynne), Evansville, IN, Andrew Person (Beth), Independence, MO, Christopher Smith, Greenwood, MO, and Laura Person, Pierce City, MO; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Patricia Houser, Nevada; several nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother, two sisters, his mother-in-law, and father-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada. The family will receive friends from 12-1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Henry County Health Center confirms 10 new positive cases of COVID-19

The Henry County Health Center (HCHC) has received confirmation of 10 more positive cases of COVID-19. Clinton-5, Montrose-2, Blairstown-1, Calhoun-1, and Windsor-1 . This brings the total number of confirmed positive cases in Henry County to 1849.

11.97% Positivity Rate

All contact tracing has commenced and all parties that have had close contact are being notified. HCHC continues to encourage residents to practice social distancing, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, and to remain home if you are sick.

The CDC continues to recommend that individuals to wear a face covering when you are in public, and are unable to social distance, to assist in preventing the spread of COVID-19.



Obituary - Carolyn Anne (Cumpton) Stephens

Carolyn Anne (Cumpton) Stephens, 76, Harrisonville, Missouri formerly of Drexel, Missouri departed this life at Golden Years Care Services, Harrisonville.

She is survived by two daughters, Julie Osburn and husband Mike, Neodesha, Kansas and Chrystal Jones and husband Brett, Harrisonville, Missouri; 3 grandchildren, Brandi, Jordan and Jackson; 2 great-grandchildren, Brynlea and Breckin; other relatives and many friends.

Cremation. A Celebration of Life Service will be held later in the spring or summer at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.

Obituary - Evelyn Friel

Evelyn Friel, age, 94, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at Jefferson City Nursing and Rehab in Jefferson City, MO. Evelyn, the youngest of seven children, was born on March 9, 1926 in Thedford, NE, the daughter of Hugh Elliott and Mary Cordis Elliot.

Evelyn married John Thomas “Johnny” Friel on May 11, 1943 in Seneca, NE. The couple spent a short time in Brownsville, TX before Johnny was shipped overseas. Evelyn returned to Nebraska to be closer to family and their first child was born before Johnny returned from the service. After the war Evelyn and Johnny lived in the Nebraska Sandhills before moving their family to Missouri in December of 1956. Evelyn and Johnny lived in a number of communities in the Nevada area before buying a home south of Nevada. Evelyn owned and operated the Rainbow Nursery for over 30 years. Childcare, especially infants, was her specialty. Evelyn cared for many “second” generations of children.

Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, Triominos, and reading. Many happy weekends were spent at Stockton Lake, hosting family dinners and swimming in the backyard pool. Evelyn also enjoyed quilting, with many stitches being sewn while the daycare children napped. Evelyn moved to Jefferson City during her last years to ensure Jeff was well established within the community before her passing.

Survivors include her children, John (Edith) Friel, Belton, MO, Judy (Tom) Ayers, Lamar, MO, Jim (Joan) Friel, Simpsonville, SC, Jerry (Jill) Friel, Asbury, MO, Joleen (Robert) Lieneke, Jefferson City, MO and Jeff Friel, Jefferson City, MO; 17 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny; her parents; one daughter and son-in-law; one brother; five sisters; and one great grandson.

Visitation will be held from 1-2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2021 with funeral services to follow at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Father Peter Savidge officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Nevada.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jefferson City Parks Special Populations Program, 1299 Lafayette St., Jefferson City, MO, 65101 or in c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Obituary - Susan Prentice

Susan Prentice, 85, Archie, MO, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2021 in Archie, MO. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian with burial in Belton Cemetery, Belton, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home.

Susan was born March 29, 1935 in Jay Oklahoma to Walter and Clara Vesta Vaughn. She was one of four children: her sister, Joan, and two brothers, John and Don Vaughn. Susan retired from the U. S. Marine Corps where she had worked as a civilian as a computer operator. She enjoyed hot coffee, word searches, and her dolls, but she especially loved her family. She was a lifelong member of the Grandview United Methodist Church and when she wasn’t spending time with her own family, she was helping other families by volunteering her time at Debbie’s Place.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her children: Laura Mitchell and husband, Mike Mitchell, and Mike Prentice; grandchildren: Christina Callen, Jesse Mitchell and wife, Morgan Mitchell, and Greg Prentice; great-grandchildren: Audra, Jaden, Tron, Ashlee, Kaidence, Deklin, and Aurora, and great-great-grandchild, Rory.
