Bates County MU Extension Office Awarded $75,000 to Support Senior Volunteer Service

Butler, MO – Bates County MU Extension Office announced that it has received an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) grant of $75,000 from the AmeriCorps federal agency to support 75 RSVP volunteers serving in Bates County. The grant will expand MU Extension’s presence in Bates County, which was previously unserved by an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP project.

Sara Bridgewater, County Engagement Specialist at Bates County MU Extension Office, says, “We are thrilled to expand our work by collaborating with volunteers and community organizations to execute a new set of projects that will focus on Healthy Futures and Education in Bates County. These opportunities, created by a grant proposal, are initiatives to help the county thrive.”

With this new funding, Bates County MU Extension Office will leverage the skills and experience of seniors in Bates County to partner with community groups and organizations, focusing on Youth, Health, Education, and Agriculture projects in Bates County.

These AmeriCorps Seniors’ volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in many different projects throughout the year. A few projects include:

  • Community Gardens: RSVP volunteers will help implement community gardens and help distribute produce to food pantries.
  • Summer Readiness Backpacks: RSVP volunteers will collaborate with teachers to assemble and provide Summer Readiness Backpacks that will include STEM activities and supplies.  These will be dispersed to students to help with gains in school readiness.
  • 4-H & STEM Activities:  RSVP volunteers will engage youth in 4-H club activities, Science Olympiad, and other extra-curricular activities that contribute to improved educational outcomes. Activities may include leadership practice, public speaking practice, hands-on STEM activities, youth-led community service projects, and other topic-based projects that engage youth.

Bates County MU Extension Office has safety measures in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Safety for our volunteers and staff is our top priority.  If you are interested in volunteering, please call the Bates County Extension Office at 660-679-4167 or email Sara Bridgewater at sbridgewater@missouri.edu for more information.

AmeriCorps Seniors’ volunteers stay healthy and active through service, improving their own lives as they improve the lives of others. A growing body of research affirms the numerous mental and physical health benefits of volunteerism, including lower mortality rates, decreased rates of depression, and increased strength and energy.

Today, AmeriCorps Seniors engages approximately 195,000 older Americans in service at 29,800 locations across the United States and territories through its Foster Grandparent, Senior Companion, and RSVP programs. Established in 1971, RSVP engages Americans age 55 and older in service, responding to our nation’s most pressing challenges.

New flag disposal box installed at the Bates County Administration Building

BATES COUNTY provides new option for proper disposal of worn U.S. flags:

New flag disposal box installed at the Bates County Administration Building:

WASHINGTON – In partnership with the National Association of Counties and Missouri Association of Counties, Bates County has installed a flag retirement box, at no cost to the county, at the Bates County Administration Building, 103 W. Dakota, Butler, Missouri by the public bulletin board in the hallway.

“This centrally-located drop-off provides convenience while respecting our national symbol,” said Marlene Wainscott, Bates County Clerk . “The county is unified in helping enable our citizens to respect our great nation while disposing of old or worn out flags.”

The United States Flag Code prescribes flag etiquette — everything from flying it near other flags to instructions on how to raise and lower it. “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” says the code.

Flags should be folded respectfully before being placed in the box. Members of the Bates County Elks Lodge of Butler will be responsible for the proper disposal of the worn flags.

“We are pleased to provide these flag retirement boxes. Helping residents properly dispose of worn U.S. flags is consistent with our commitment to public service and community engagement,” said NACo President Judge Gary Moore from Boone County, Ky.

Butler Home Improvement Club meets

The Butler Home Improvement Club
met January 19th at the home of Pat Friedrich. Pat welcomed us and we collected dues for 2021. Pat led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We then had roll call and was answered by 6 members with a cute Maxine quote. Pat gave devotion with a Bible verse and a cute story about cats and life lessons on being humble and how Jesus loves us. Minutes were read and approved for November and December by Laura Rank. In discussing new business, we were reminded that all meetings will begin at 6 pm. Laura Rank read the constitution and we talked about increasing the remembrance gift amount, which we will decide  and vote on next month. We will also elect officers next month, since not enough for a vote were in attendance.

Some new business was discussed  about what to do about the rest home ladies that we sponsor. We will discuss  this next month also, since no one is able to visit the rest homes at this time due to the virus. Vicki Vail had the pig 'n poke box and Kristy Franklin took it for January. It had hand lotion, body lotion, hand sanitizer and a candle. Pat Friedrich had the guess box and Louis Foster guessed it. It was a beautiful stretch pearl bracelet and necklace. Louis Foster brought the door prize and Laura won that. It was a sweet valentine mug filled with candy kisses and a delicious smelling candle.

We went ahead and discussed that we would all love to have this years Christmas party at the Friendship Church again, because we all enjoyed it there in 2020 and that would be Tuesday December 14th, because the following week is just too close to Christmas. We will, of course, discuss this at next months meeting. Pat Friedrich, our hostess, served a delicious bread pudding dessert with tea and coffee. Everyone visited, and a wonderful time was had by all. - submitted
