Armed Robbery at Kay Jewelers in Raymore

At approximately 2:07 p.m. today, March 31, an armed robbery occurred at Kay Jewelers at 1945 W. Foxwood Drive in Raymore.

A thin, black male subject entered the store armed with a handgun. He was wearing a red Chiefs cap and a black and gray jacket. He left westbound from the business in a silver vehicle, possibly a Nissan.

The investigation is ongoing and Raymore Police are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Sgt. Cory Miller at 816-892-3017.

Obituary - Gloria Marlene Murphy

Gloria Marlene Murphy, 78, Sheldon, MO passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Medicalodges of Ft. Scott, KS. Marlene was born August 24, 1942 in Independence, KS to Homer Hugh and Ruby Lee (Willis) Graves. She married Jack Murphy on September 18, 1959 in Neodesha, KS and he preceded her in death on June 13, 2020.

In addition to her husband Jack, she is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jimmy Graves of Independence, KS; two sisters, Margie Yarbrough of Clarksville, AR, and Joane Lindsay of Wichita, KS.

Marlene is survived by one son, Tracy Murphy (Rhonda) of Sheldon, MO; three grandchildren, Caleb Murphy and Tyler Murphy, both of Sheldon, and Mandy Murphy Curtis (Jordan) of Wetumka, OK. Also surviving is a twin sister, Darlene Cummings of Elkins, AR; one brother, Homer Graves (Wanda) of Sheldon; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 3, 2021 at Bluff Cemetery in Barton County, MO with Steven Hopkins officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday evening at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Bates County Sheriffs Office warns of scam

We have received several reports from people in our community who are receiving phone calls from an individual claiming to be a Detective with the Bates County Sheriff's Office. 

This individual demands you to pay a certain amount of money or a warrant will be issued for your arrest. This is a scam. Our office does not contact anyone by phone requesting money.


Obituary - John Henry Bower

John Henry Bower, age 84, a resident of rural Deerfield, Missouri, passed away Friday, March 26, 2021, at his home. He was born May 3, 1936, in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the son of Jesse Bower and June Dunbar Bower. He had served with the United States Army. 

John married Amelia E. Jones on July 17, 1964, at Miami, Oklahoma. John had worked for several years as a truck driver. He enjoyed spending time with his family and exploring the outdoors with his grandchildren. He also liked to garden and watch western movies.

Survivors include his wife, Amelia, of the home; and children, Rick Jones, of Ft. Scott, Jill Love and husband, Ron, Tony Bower, and Jason Bower and wife, Thabena, all of Deerfield; twelve grandchildren, Dustin Jones, Kendria Brown, Josh Jones, Haley Jones, and Garrett, Alyson Love, Quentin Love, Gavin Love, Evan Love, Jessica Bower, and fiancé, Jacob, Rebecca Bower, Micala Bower and Preslee Bower and ten great-grandchildren, Elijah, Hannah, Faith, Glory, Silas, Jordan, Romey, Madison, Taylor and David. Also surviving are two sisters, Mable Green, of Colorado and Roberta Rickman, of Girard, Kansas and two brothers, Perry Bower and wife, Helen and Chet Bower and wife, Linda, all of Ft. Scott, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his son, Doug Bower, three brothers, Jay, Floyd and Leroy Bower and a sister, Margaret Rhodes.

There was cremation and no services will be held at this time. Memorials are suggested to Care to Share and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Smoke alarms delivered for Fire Awareness Prevention month

Henry County Health Center delivers Smoke Alarms to Henry County Fire Departments during our annual Fire Awareness Prevention month. 

While delivering to the local rural departments, the following was shared: Dale Bailey, from Montrose VFD 04226 reported the smoke alarms were greatly appreciated by their community. 

He stated that “our Jr. Fire Firefighters assisted in the delivery and installation to residents in the Montrose area last year with much success.” Dale stated, “It has been a positive experience for our Jr. Fire Firefighters allowing them to put their skills into action.”
