Alex Johnson named new Activities Director for Clinton High School

The Clinton School District is proud to announce it has selected Alex Johnson as Activities Director for Clinton High School starting with the 2021-2022 school year. Johnson was selected as the top candidate after two rounds of interviews, including a panel of Clinton School District staff members.

Mr. Johnson has spent the last three years in the Socorro Consolidated School District in Socorro, NM where he has served as Activities Director, Dean of Students and in multiple coaching roles. Prior to his time in Socorro, Johnson was a Social Studies teacher and Physical Education teacher in Central New Mexico and thereafter in the Dallas, Fort Worth Metro Area.

Johnson has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Missouri State University in Springfield, and a Master of Science in Sport Administration and Management from Eastern New Mexico University.

Johnson graduated from Lafayette High School in the Saint Louis Metro Area where he participated in Lancer Soccer and served as Fellowship of Christian Athletes President. During his time in education, Mr. Johnson has coached football, track, cross country, and basketball, taught Strength and Conditioning and has overseen many fine arts and other extracurricular activities. As Special Teams Coordinator for the Socorro Warrior Football Program, Johnson played a key part in his team’s District Championship and State Runner-Up finish in the New Mexico Activities Association AAA Classification. As Head Boys Varsity Track Coach, Johnson has also led his Warriors to Back-to-Back District Championships while qualifying 20+ athletes for state competition.

During his time as Activities Director, the Warrior Athletic Program has experienced levels of success not previously seen in Socorro Athletics. Under Johnson’s tutelage in Socorro, the program has secured State Titles in the sports of wrestling, golf, and track, a Bowl Championship in football, State-Runner-Up finishes in the sports of football, soccer, and volleyball, and District Championships in football, soccer, volleyball, golf, baseball, and track.

Throughout the interview process it was evident that his strength is in building positive relationships with all stakeholders. Mr. Johnson also has a passion for character development for students and professional development for coaches and sponsors to improve the culture of schools. Johnson wants to build upon these things to help make Clinton activities competitive in the MRVC West Conference.

It was evident throughout the interview process that he was a top candidate for a position that requires many hours of dedication and a high level of commitment.”

Mr. Johnson said, “I am incredibly excited for the opportunity that the Clinton School District has given me. When my wife and I visited, we felt a very warm welcome by the community and we want to thank Dr. Steffens and Superintendent Brown for welcoming the Johnson family with open arms. I personally look forward to meeting everyone as soon as possible and I am excited to get to work and start building relationships with the students, teachers, staff, and community members. Alex and his wife Kelsey are college sweethearts who met during their time at Missouri State University. They are both looking forward to getting closer to family with this move. Kelsey is from Licking, Missouri and, along with their three young children, will be joining Alex in moving to Clinton this summer. Harrisonville woman escapes serious injury after striking deer in the roadway

On June 14th around 9:30 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County along with Cass County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident on Route D just south of East 281st Street in rural Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 59 year old Sandra L. Bartlett of Harrisonville, Missouri struck a deer that was in the roadway.

Sandra L, Bartlett sustained minor injuries and she refused medical treatment at the scene of this accident.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene of the crash by J's Southland Tow.



Obituary - Cecilia Jonelle “Jonnie” Shanks

Cecilia “Jonnie” Shanks, 77 of Marshfield, Missouri passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021 at her home in Marshfield. Cremation, with graveside services to be held 11:00 am Saturday, June 19, 2021 in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel, Missouri. Cecilia Jonelle “Jonnie” Shanks was born November 1, 1943 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to William “Bill” and Mae Koester “Debbie” James. Jonnie was united in marriage to Errol Shanks. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage before his passing in 2008. During the seven years they lived in Utah, Jonnie very much enjoyed the mountains. After Errol’s passing, Jonnie moved to be close to her grandchildren.

She enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible, and it was very evident that they enjoyed it as well. Jonnie was blessed to pass very peacefully in her sleep, as she had always wanted. She was very much loved and will be greatly missed.

Jonnie was preceded in death by her parents and husband Errol Shanks. She is survived by her three children, Richard Errol Shanks (Sonia), Shelly D. Baker (Gene), and Ronald D. Shanks (Amy), 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, six sisters, and three brothers.

Kenneth Wayne Baxter, age 72 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, June 11, 2021 at his home in Butler. He was born July 14, 1948 to Clarence Edgar and Myrtle Mae Dorrel Baxter in Butler, Missouri.

Kenneth is survived by two sons, Russell Eugene Baxter of Colorado and Kenneth Lee Baxter of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; a sister, Joyce Fitzpatrick and husband Ralph of Butler, Missouri; and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Christopher A. Baxter; and a brother, Gary Baxter.

Obituary - Martha Butts

Martha Ann Stubbart Butts was born November 5, 1953 to Veryl and Hazel Stubbart in Independence, MO. She was raised on a farm in rural Missouri and graduated from Adrian R III School in May 1972. After graduation, she lived in Ponca City, OK until 1974 and then moved back to Missouri where she lived in Butler until 1980. In 1980 she moved to Alva, WY where she began working a few miles away at Neiman Sawmill in Hulett, WY. While she was working at the sawmill, she met the love of her life, Leslie Leroy Butts and they married on November 7, 1981. Leslie brought into the marriage 3 children: Joyce, 8, Justin, 2, and Jon, 2. A few years later Genie came along in 1985 and Charlie in 1987. After they were married Martha and Leslie moved to Newcastle, WY where they raised their 5 children and built their home. In the 80’s and 90’s Martha worked at different places in town. In the 90’s she began her career in banking at Pinnacle Bank where she worked for 10 years. In the early 2000’s she began working at First State Bank where she retired. She worked 25 years in banking and truly loved what she did. It was always reflected in her bright smile. Her friends and customers at the bank would tell you that she always had a smile and maybe even a joke. Martha always loved deeply and through the years her house and heart were always open to the straggle of extras her kids brought through. In January 2012, she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and fought a courageous battle for 9 years. Martha was a proud member of the Daughters of the Nile as well as Worthy Matron for Eastern Star Number 30.

Martha is proceeded in death by her parents, Veryl and Hazel Stubbart, brothers Gary, John and James and her sister Gene. She is survived by her husband of almost 40 years Leslie Butts, her 5 children; Joyce Schraeder, Justin (Chris) Butts, Jon (Susie) Butts, Genie (Jeremy) Anderson, and Charlie Butts, 11 grandchildren; Cody Schraeder (Sydney Harrison), Nathan Schraeder, Selena O’Neil, Kate (Even) Mitchell, Jayda Butts, Mackenzie Anderson, James Butts, Rayeann Butts, Annica Vargas, Brianna Butts, and Kazner Nelson, 4 great-grandchildren; Greenlei Schraeder, Teddy Leathers (adopted by heart), Oakleigh O’Neil, and Baby Mitchell, her sister Mary (Don) Yocum of Missouri and her sister Rosa (George) Enos of Adrian Missouri, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Eastern Star.



Semi truck accident in Linn County Kansas

On June 14th around 8:30 p.m. the Kansas State Highway Patrol responded to a one vehicle accident on northbound Highway 69 around mile marker 92.1 in rural Linn County.

The Kansas State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2020 Mack Semi Truck driven by 73 year old Geraldine M. Thiltgen of Kansas City, Missouri veered into the east ditch and traveled about a half mile before coming to rest.

Geraldine M. Thiltgen sustained minor injuries in this accident and she was transported by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.

The semi truck was towed by Payne's Towing.
