The Middle of June in the Year:
1909 – Dr. Christy is making vast improvements at his park and lake (Christy Lake), with a new pavilion, a 68 foot bridge to the island. This is the only public park in the Butler area since a Kansas City Club bought the Butler Lake and closed it to the public.
1888 – The city of Rich Hill votes against prohibition by a majority of 210.
1879 – The new bell is installed in the belfry of the Ohio Street Methodist Church.
1880 – The new safe at the N. B. Jeter jewelry store weighs over 1,500 pounds.
1926 – The first patient is admitted to Mrs. S. C. Stayton’s Community hospital at 107 S. Havannah St. in Butler.
1885 – About 600 former students of the Butler Academy enjoy their annual reunion.
1938 – The big Miller Rodeo, the number 1 such troupe in the Midwest, from Rich Hill, begins a 3 night stand at the Bit and Bridle Club grounds, in west Butler. Performers from Texas, South Dakota, and Montana are on the bill.
1895 – The leaders of Adrian are preparing to celebrate the 4th of July. The corner stone of the new school building will be laid, the Altona Band will furnish the music, and of course, lots of fireworks will be shot off.
1915 – O. J. Windiset, in Drexel, is the agent for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
1910 – Mr. & Mrs. William Walton leaves Butler for New York where they will take a steamer to Liverpool England.
1929 – The Adrian area has 5 inches of rain in 4 hours, washing out the railroad tracks 1 mile north of Crescent Hill. At 10 pm, a freight train and 18 cars derail there.
1880 – The chinch bugs are eating up Bates Co. crops. The farmers’ lot looks bleak.
1897 – At a memorial ceremony, at Green Lawn cemetery, West of Rich Hill, the Modern Woodmen of the World unveil a monument to Ed Bahling, who was killed in a mine accident September 14, 1896. The stone is shaped like a tree truck. Six special trains brought lodges from all over the Midwest. Bands, accompanied by large crowds from Butler, Adrian, Harrisonville, Clinton, Deepwater, Schell City, El Dorado Springs, Stockton, Nevada, Lamar, Fort Scott, Arma, Pittsburg, Mound City, Pleasanton, Carbon Center, and Panama marched in the parade to the cemetery.
1916 – Butler’s Company “B” of the Missouri Infantry arrives at Camp Clark at Nevada, MO for transportation to the Mexican Border War.
1906 – A couple of Pleasant Gap toughs come to Butler looking for trouble. They are guests of the Sheriff’s boarding house (jail).
1904 – Lightning strikes the new Courthouse dome, causing $75 damage. Butler.
