Samantha McCoy sentenced to 25 years MDOC

This morning, Judge Brandon Baker sentenced Samantha Leigh McCoy to 25 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for the death of her mother Cindy McCoy.

McCoy, 35 accepted a plea offer of 15 years for voluntary manslaughter and 10 years for armed criminal action. Judge Baker ordered the sentences to be served consecutively. Samantha McCoy was represented by Public Defender, Jason Speer.

May 1, 2019, McCoy argued with her mother while on the way to scheduled court appearance in Bates County. McCoy struck her mother with her vehicle at the City Lake west of Butler. A short time later a witness found a purse in the road and saw a truck leaving the lake at a high rate of speed. The witness went to the lake and found Cindy McCoy, 70 in the lake floating behind the SUV she had been driving.

McCoy was arrested a short time later and has been in the Bates County Jail until todays sentencing hearing.

Family members and close friends were present for today’s proceedings. Mr. Charlie McCoy, Cindy’s husband died of cancer earlier this year. Chris Ramsey, son of the victim delivered a Victim Impact statement to the court and asked for the maximum sentence to be imposed for his sister. Cindy and Charlie McCoy lived in St. Clair County, Missouri.

Samantha McCoy was remanded to the custody of the Bates County Sheriff and will be transported to the Missouri Department of Corrections. Prosecuting Attorney Hugh C. Jenkins represented the State in this case.

Obituary - Etta Sue Hendrick Fairman

Etta Sue Hendrick Fairman, age 85, of Urich, Missouri died June 19, 2021, in Belton, Mo. She was born June 20, 1935 to Brooksie and Anna Marie Daniel Hendrick near Urich, Mo.

At the age of 11, Etta Sue accepted Christ as her Savior while attending Cove Creek Baptist Church near Mayesburg. She graduated from Ballard High School in 1953 and attended Business College in Kansas City, Mo. Her first job was at Emery-Byrd-Thayer in K.C. She married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Lee Fairman, on August 31,1956 in Belton, Missouri. To this union, four children were born.

Etta Sue was quite creative. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, crocheting and painting. When her family was young, she had a large garden and spent a good amount of time freezing and canning the bounty of that garden. For the first ten years of their marriage, she and Melvin lived in Independence, Mo. but bought a farm in Ballard in 1966. They attended Cove Creek Christian Church as a family, and each of her four children came to know the Lord there. Etta Sue was involved in Cove Creek’s VBS and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Ballard PTA and was president of the organization for several years. She was also a member and president of both CWF (Christian Women’s Fellowship), Mingo Club, the Red Hatter’s Club and the Fine Arts League of Bates County. She was an avid spectator to all the sports and other events in which her children (and later grandchildren) participated. Melvin was the girl’s softball coach for many years, and she learned to keep score and assisted him in that way. We called Etta Sue a “social butterfly” because she was always on the go and hard to catch at home until the time came when her knees didn’t work so well anymore, and she spent the majority of her time in a wheelchair. Even then, she kept in contact with lots of family and friends. We joked that she needed a switchboard to keep all her calls straight.

In later years, Melvin and Etta Sue took pleasure in traveling to Branson and enjoyed a variety of music shows there. Etta Sue also enjoyed playing dominoes at the Ballard Grill with a lively group of friends. She learned how to use a computer, became a member of Facebook and loved keeping up with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed the many pictures they shared, and the communication that went back and forth between them all.

Etta Sue was preceded in death by her parents, husband Melvin of 60 years; her brothers, Scottie and Bill, and sisters-in-law, Ginny and Linda. She is survived by two sons, Alan Fairman and wife Linda of Ballard, Missouri and Darryl Fairman and wife Michele of Peculiar, Missouri; two daughters, Susan Wainscott and husband Chuck of Raymore, Missouri and Lisa Smith and husband Bret of Acampo, California; one brother, Don Hendrick and wife Ferne of Peculiar, Missouri; one sister, Iris Schuster and husband Eldo of Overland Park, Kansas, one brother-in-law, Marvin Fairman and wife Mary Ann of Highland Village, Texas; 13 grandchildren, Julie Fairman Guffey and husband Lance of Ballard, Missouri, Jason Fairman and wife Cara of Adrian, Missouri, Lindsey Wainscott Kalivoda and husband Cody of Overland Park, Kansas, Tyler Wainscott and wife Danielle of Raymore, Missouri, Cameron Wainscott and wife Audrianna of Raymore, Missouri; Connor Wainscott and wife Tiffany of Shawnee, Kansas; and Madison Wainscott of Raymore, Missouri, Kyle Smith and wife Lacy of Acampo, California, Caleb Smith of Acampo, California; and Kelsey Smith Wieland and husband Jacob of Joliet, Montana; Brooks Fairman and wife Emilee of Belton, Missouri, McKenzie Fairman Harms and husband Jacob of Harrisonville, Missouri and Jace Fairman of Peculiar, Missouri. Etta Sue is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren, Shelby, Rylee, Kaden and Greyson Guffey, Anna and Carson Fairman, Finnegan and Marguerite Kalivoda, Kinsley, Emberlyn, Delaney and Hudson Wainscott, Kellan, Nolan and Ashlyn Wainscott, Gracie, Paisley and Bailey Smith, Jack Harms and a host of family and friends.

Etta Sue trusted completely in God, and knew that He had a home prepared for her. After Melvin’s death, she depended on God more than ever before and grew closer to Him. She leaves behind a lot of memories

Nevada Police make arrest in Burglary Investigation

On June 7th Nevada Police took a report of a burglary that resulted in the victim’s identity being stolen.

It was reported by the victim that accounts had been opened up in their name and the suspect had also purchased a vehicle using the victim’s identity. When conducting the investigation, detectives were able to develop a female suspect involved in the case.

On June 16, 2021 Nevada Police conducted a search warrant in the 300 block of W. Allison St. in response to the burglary investigation. During the search, Nevada Police were able to locate multiple pieces of evidence that linked back to the original burglary report. Police also seized multiple illegal firearms and suspected methamphetamine.

The female suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Vernon County Jail for holding by Nevada Police. The subject has been identified as follows:
Ashlee M Perez, age 29 of Nevada
On June 16, 2021, the following charges were filed against Ashlee Perez through the Vernon County Associate Court:
One (1) Count of Burglary 2nd Degree – Class D Felony
One (1) Count of Forgery - Class D Felony
One (1) Count Possession of a Defaced Firearm – Class B Misdemeanor

Perez is being held in the Vernon County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 cash only bond.

Additional suspects and charges are under review at the Vernon County Prosecutor’s Office.

Obituary - Robert L. Vogel

Robert was born on August 16, 1929 in Germantown, Missouri to Frank and Louise Cook Vogel. He attended Maple Grove Catholic School and St. Ludgers Catholic Church in Germantown, Missouri.

After finishing grade school, Robert helped with the family farm until enlisting in the military at the age of 18. He completed two tours of duty overseas; the first in Okinawa Japan followed by Korea in 1948 - 1952.

After serving in the military, he started a television repair shop and L.P. Gas business with his brother Ervin Vogel. He owned the business for 49 years.

Robert served his church and community in many ways. He was a Eucharistic minister, a member of the Knights of Columbus for 74 years, reaching the fourth degree, a past commander and life member of the VFW, a member of the Montrose City Council for eight years, a volunteer fire fighter with Montrose Fire Department for 25 years and Scoutmaster for Montrose Troop 438 and Paola Troop 100.

Bob is survived by his wife Charlotte Vogel, sister Betty Kniffin, sons Steve (Wenge) Vogel, David Vogel, Jerry Vogel, daughter Karen (Tom) McCarthy and grandchildren Jenny Spencer, Elizabeth (Joe) Leask, Aaron (Pam) Vogel , Joel (Kendra) Vogel, Rebecca (Curtis) Blackthorne , nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by siblings Eugene Vogel, Ervin Vogel, Cecil Vogel, Maurice Vogel, Rita Strope, Raymond Vogel, Paul Vogel and Mary Ellen Jurgensmeyer.

Due to the increase in the number of cases of the Delta Virus in Missouri, the family wishes to have a private family service.

MoDOT TRAFFIC ALERT: Bates County Route D CLOSED East of Butler June 23 for Pipe Work

Where: Bates County Route D between Bates County routes BB and OO east of Butler

When: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 23

 

What: Route D CLOSED to allow MoDOT crews to replace a drainpipe underneath the road

 

Traffic Impacts:

• All Route D lanes CLOSED where crews are working
• Drivers will have access to driveways at either end of the work zone, but will not be able to travel through the work zone
• No signed detour
• Signs and message boards will alert drivers to the work zone
• Drivers should find alternate route

Weather and/or scheduling conflicts could alter the work schedule.

 

Obituary - Phillip Gale Boyle

Phillip Gale Boyle, 74, Nevada, MO passed away on Friday, June 18, 2021.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Click Cemetery in Nevada.
