AC City Hall will be closed Monday, July 5 in observance of Independence Day.
Blood pressure and glucose checks on July 8 are being provided by Ellett Memorial Hospital and Appleton City Rural Health Clinic. They will be at the community rooms of Beech Street Apartments (515 N. Beech St) from 8:00 -8:45 a.m., Appleton City Estates (300 S. Beech St) from 9:00-9:45 a.m., and Hickory Court Apartments (101 W. 5th St) from 10:00-10:45 a.m. These outreach events are open to community members also.
The 17th Annual Appleton City Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show will be held Saturday, July 10 at the City Park. Check-in is from 8:00 a.m. to noon and the Car Show will be from noon to 3:00 p.m. There will be a $10 entry fee per vehicle. There will be judging for all classes with the top 70 for cars and trucks, top 3 for motorcycles and top 3 for rat rods. The first 150 entries will be given dash plaques. There will also be a 50-50 drawing, door prizes, goodie bags and a live auction. Food concessions, biscuits & gravy and cobbler & ice cream will be available. Budman will present music entertainment. Proceeds from the Show will go toward a pair of $1000 scholarships for local high school students. In addition, Zink Motor Co, which is one of the oldest Ford dealerships in the country, is hosting the Kansas City Antique Car Clu8b at the dealership in Appleton City during the car show. 20-25 Model A’s and Model T’s will be on display. There will be an open house and tours of this historic dealership. The admission is free. The location for this show is across the street from the Appleton City Car Show. There will be a benefit dinner and auction for Kirk Schussler to raise money to help with medical and chemotherapy expenses due to colon cancer. The benefit will be held on Saturday, July 10 at the Montrose Community Building in Montrose. All monies raised will be put into an account that has been established as the Kirk Schussler Medical Fund at the Montrose Savings Bank. A whole hog dinner will be served with to go meals being offered. The dinner will be served from 5:00 - 7:30 with the auction beginning at 7:30. The Sesquicentennial Committee would like ideas and items to display/decorate Main Street for AC’s 150 year plus 1 celebration Thursday, August 12 thru Sunday, August 15, 2021. Business/property owners with buildings and lots are encouraged to display historic items and information or just let the committee know if you would allow others to display/decorate your store fronts or vacant lots. In conjunction with the Appleton City Sesquicentennial Celebration and also the congregation’s Sesquicentennial (+1), Trinity Lutheran Church will be sponsoring a quilt show at the church and inviting area quilters to participate. The Quilt Show will be Friday and Saturday, August 13-14 during the Sesquicentennial. Included in the show will be hand-quilted, machine-quilted, embroidered, appliquéd, and baby quilts, and wall hangings. If your quilt, either old or newer, has an interesting story with it, also plan on sharing that with the public. The show pre-registration begins now and ends June 30. At this time, 1 item can be registered per entry. After June 30, depending on responses, the registration may be opened up again to include more available spaces at the show. A $25 prize will be awarded in each category and a $50 “People’s Choice” Award. The Truman Lake Community Foundation spring grant awards totaling $43,384 were recently distributed. The local foundation provided $33,384 of the monies, with the other $10,000 from a separate grant program they were awarded. Recipients included the following: Clinton Friends of the Park $5,000 grant towards a new community playground, Clinton Police Department $5,000 grant towards drone program, Clinton Main Street, Inc. $5,000 grant to support operational activities, West Central Missouri Community Action Agency $1,500 grant supporting Senior Care Pen Pal Program, Urich Athletic Boosters $5,000 grant to assist with summer recreational activities, Clinton School District $4,900 grant to support a literacy program, Clinton School District $385 grant to support a classroom library program, Clinton School District $499 grant to support technology in classrooms, Ellett Memorial Hospital Foundation $3,000 grant to support a walking path expansion, Montrose Ball Association $5,000 grant to assist with rebuilding handicap access to their facilities, Windsor Ministerial Alliance $5,000 grant to support their summer meal program, Henry County Prosecutor’s Victim’s Advocate Office $600 grant to assist with funds for low-income victims to attend proceedings and VFW Missouri Post 8820 $2,500 grant to assist with remodeling the bathrooms making them handicap accessible.

West Central Missouri Community Action Agency’s Senior Care found a way to encourage safe socialization during the midst of a pandemic. COVID-19 enhanced the isolation and loneliness that many seniors experience. Senior Care Pen Pals are matched with other seniors that have similar likes and hobbies. Writing kits are provided and include all the necessary items to become successful writing companions. Kits include stationery, note cards, all occasion greeting cards, ink pens, motivational quotes to share and postage stamps. Community members may enroll in Taking Care of You, a virtual class presented by the University of Missouri Extension program that offers practical strategies for dealing with stress and life challenges. Developed by an interdisciplinary MU Extension team, the research-based program focuses on positive psychology and mindfulness in sessions held over eight weeks. Participants learn concepts and practical strategies they can incorporate into their everyday lives through small group discussion, self-reflection and group activities. The program teaches ways to: Take better care of body, mind and spirit health, Become more aware of the mind-body connection, and how to use this awareness for better health, Respond rather than react to life’s stressors, Discover opportunities in life’s challenges, Develop habits that can lead to better health, Find ways to bring more joy into life, Simplify life and Live more in the moment. Five area churches are teaming together to present a community VBS on July 12-16 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. each evening. They invite all kids ages 3 years- 6th grade to join them on this "Journey with Jesus". During the Sesquicentennial Celebration there are many area to participate in exhibiting military items, art creations, quilts, polish up the special vehicle and tractor, crank up the small engine, built an outstanding float, grow those whiskers, sew up an old fashion costume, sit back and enjoy the movie or listen to the Main Street APP, dig in the closet for the decade clothing to wear or loan to someone to model, or clothing is available that needs models. Positions need to be filled for greeters at all the exhibits to welcome the visitors. And don't forget to buy your souvenirs early, some may sell out. Missouri ag producers who need to obtain or renew a private pesticide applicator license to purchase restricted-use pesticides can attend an on-line Zoom class or complete a worksheet based on the training manual, according to Pat Miller, University of Missouri Extension agronomist. The manual is optional to purchase for the Zoom classes. The Zoom classes are offered state-wide and there are a number of dates and times available through the summer. Producers can register for the Zoom classes at the following link: https://extension.missouri.edu/programs/pesticide-applicator-training Miller will be teaching the July 15 Zoom class but producers can attend any of the classes taught by MU specialists across the state. Producers choosing the worksheet option will need to use the manual, which is still the 2007 M87. Manuals can be purchased or ordered through your local Extension Center. Manual costs have gone up considerably so if you are recertifying and already have a manual, you can avoid purchasing one. For the worksheet option, contact MU Extension agronomy specialist, Pat Miller, or your local Extension Center. There is no longer an option to view a video at the Extension Center to complete the training. This class also completes the EPA worker protection training program for ag employees who handle pesticides. Miller reminds producers that if their license expired in May, 2021 or earlier, they will need to use the form for a new license instead of the one for recertification.
