WMATMA Great Beginnings: The Rival Bucket Stave Machine

The RIVAL Company, manufacturers of small appliances, had a factory in Clinton, Missouri that specialized in making Ice Cream Freezers using wooden buckets.

In 1997 the company contacted WMATMA and offered their bucket stave machines to us to set up at our living history museum.

Several men traveled with trailers to retrieve all the equipment, which included much more than just the stave cutting tooling that we thought we were getting. The gift included several large machines, everything needed to build a wooden bucket from stock wood and wire.

The only stipulation for us having all the equipment was we had to promise we would never make buckets to sell. We could run it for demonstration, but never profit from it.

All the machines are running with flat belts using line shafts which is powered from one engine. The flat belt line shafts turning runs all the different machines at once, each one doing a separate operation even a ring fabrication machine. At Frontier Village all the line shafting in the building is being driven by a 1940 International auxiliary power plant with a Continental flat head engine. After we hauled all the huge machines to Frontier Village, we had to build a building just to house it all. One of our most prized members and a machinist/wood worker/builder Charlie Forester, with some help, put it all together and made it operational. It is a very impressive display to see.

Much appreciation to the men that moved it all over to Frontier Village and a special thanks to Charlie Forester for building all the shafting and setting up the entire display.

Aggravated Kidnapping Arrest made in Pittsburg Kansas

PITTSBURG, KANSAS –On Saturday, July 3rd, 2021, around 07:17 a.m., officers with the Pittsburg Police Department received a phone call from an anonymous person who reported their friend was battered by a significant other overnight. However, the caller would not provide the location of the victim.

At 07:36 a.m., dispatch received a call from the victim, who would not initially disclose her exact location, for fear the suspect would find her. Officers eventually met with the victim around the area of 800 block of S. Joplin St., in Pittsburg.

Officers transported the victim to the police station where she was interviewed. The victim stated that overnight her significant other, 24-year-old Sean M. Wolsey, of Pittsburg, placed his hands around her neck three separate times during a domestic argument. 

The victim stated Mr. Wolsey strangled her to the point where she nearly lost consciousness. The victim stated that she attempted to escape the residence through a bedroom window after each time, but Mr. Wolsey caught her and pulled her back into the residence. Eventually the victim was able to escape.

Officers attempted to contact Mr. Wolsey at 801 S. Joplin St, Apt B, in Pittsburg. Officers could see individuals inside looking through the curtains, but the door was not answered. Officers also attempted to contact Mr. Wolsey by phone, however the phone was not answered.

The Pittsburg Police Department’s Special Response Team was activated. A search warrant was obtained for the person of Mr. Wolsey at 801 S. Joplin St., Apt. B., which was subsequently served by the Special Response Team. Mr. Wolsey was located within the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.
Mr. Wolsey was arrested and transported to the jail at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office for booking. 

He was arrested for felony aggravated kidnapping, felony aggravated battery, felony possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Wolsey also had an active arrest warrant for him through the Crawford County District Court. Mr. Wolsey is being held in lieu of a $100,000.00 bond.

A 17-year-old juvenile was also located in the residence and was taken into police protective custody.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing at this time. Anyone having information related to this incident, or other incidents, is urged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at 620-231-1700, or at our tip line, 620-231-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.

Rich Hill Pie Auction Breaks Record

Once again, Rich Hill shows “why” it’s “Famous for the 4th” at the Citizen’s Bank sponsored World Record Pie Auction as we hit a new grand total of $35,000 for the pies sold.

 
Top price was $4,000 for the winning pie and a close second was an earlier $3,600 pie. Several others broke through the $1,000 barrier.

Bates County Fair Cattlemen's Steak Dinner July 8th

The Bates County Cattlemen’s Steak Dinner will be served Thursday, July 8th from the Bates County Fairgrounds in Butler.

The Serving will start at 5:00 pm. Each meal will include a Ribeye Steak, cheesy potatoes, baked beans, tea or water, and a dinner roll. The meal is set at $22.00 per plate.

It’s first come first serve until the food runs out! That’s the Bates County Cattlemen’s Steak Dinner, Thursday, July 8th from 5 pm until the food runs out!

Obituary - David Earl Ross

David Earl Ross, age 50, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021, as a result of a motor vehicle accident south of Ft. Scott. He was born September 15, 1970, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Martin Earl Ross and Kathleen Yevon Rangel Ross. David graduated from the Uniontown High School with the Class of 1989. He married Retha Lynn Wimberley on December 28, 1991. 

In his earlier years, he worked at the family business, M & K Services in Mound City where he worked as a mechanic and powder coater. He continued working in this line of work the remainder of his life. He enjoyed restoring and detailing cars and trucks and will be remembered for always having a clean vehicle with shinny tires. He enjoyed traveling on the backroads and taking the occasional trip to the casino. He liked to fish and always had a joke or a story to tell.

Survivors include his four children, Tim Ross of Uniontown, Kansas, Matthew Ross, Dylan Ross and Elizabeth Ross, all of Ft. Scott and eight grandchildren, Madilynn, Ryker, Claira, Kathleen, Addison, Bradynn, Jaelynn, and Braxton. Also surviving are two brothers, John Ross and Danny Ross, both of Mapleton, a sister, Suzie Cliffman of Ft. Scott and his grandmothers, Margie Rangel and Thelma Ross, both of Kansas City, Kansas. David was preceded in death by his wife, Retha, on July 19, 2018. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his grandfathers, Leonard Rangel and Noland Ross.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 7th at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the David Ross Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.
