Arrest made in vehicular homicide in Henry County

Tuesday, March 15th, 2022:

An arrest warrant has been issued for Shane Ray Chesher, age 36, of Windsor, Missouri, for the Class A Felony of First Degree Murder, in connection with an incident that occurred on East Jefferson Street, Windsor, Missouri, on Friday, March 4th, 2022.

A criminal complaint was filed with the Henry County Associate Circuit Court today by the Henry County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, regarding Chesher’s alleged involvement of being the driver of a vehicle that struck and severely injured Gail Kirn, then fled the scene. 

Gail Kirn was transported to a Kansas City area trauma center by air ambulance to treat life threatening injuries that he sustained as a result of the incident.

During the morning hours of Tuesday, March 15th, 2022, Kirn succumbed to his injuries and passed away. Later the same afternoon, Chesher was located and taken into custody in Kansas, prior to the arrest warrant being issued. 

He is currently in custody on a “no bond” warrant and will face being extradited back to Missouri in the near future.

Obituary - Matthew Marshall Carroll

Matthew Marshall Carroll, 35, Independence, MO, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 14, 2022. The family will have private services at a later date.

Matthew was born March 15, 1986 in Kansas City, MO, a son of Brett and Bethann (Marshall) Carroll. Matthew was a cook, employed by several area restaurants.

Matthew was preceded by his maternal grandparents, Harry and Diane Marshall; paternal great-grandparents, Richard and Allene (Rogers) Mansfield; uncle, Doug Marshall; aunt, Rhonda Verdic; and cousin, Marisa Sain.

He is survived by his daughter, Skye, and his parents, of the home; paternal grandparents, Loyd "Sonny" Wiseman (Toni), Harrisonville, MO; brothers: Christopher Carroll (Kelly), Kansas City, MO and Eric Carroll, Independence, MO; aunt, Christine Sain, Urich, MO; great-uncle, Robert Mansfield, San Francisco, CA; nephews: Tyce and Will Carroll; several cousins, and extended family and friends.

Vehicle fire in Clinton

The Clinton Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire today in the 700 block of East Franklin Street in Clinton.

No injuries were reported.

Rain, a few isolated thunderstorms, maybe a wintry mix early Friday morning.....yep, sounds like March in Missouri.



Obituary - Michael Dwain Ackerley

Michael "Mike" Dwain Ackerley, 78, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, passed from this life on March 12, 2022. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mike was born in Jacksonville, Florida on September 30, 1943, the oldest of two boys to James Melvin and Melvin "Mel" Jane (Moles) Ackerley. He graduated from Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis, MO. 

He then attended the University of Missouri obtaining Bachelors and Masters degrees in Civil Engineering. Mike worked as a Professional Engineer, primarily in the petroleum industry, for 40 years in Houston, Tulsa, and Kansas City.

He is survived by his brother, Gary Ackerley (Diana); children: Stephanie Casida (David) and Stephen Ackerley (Lori); grandchildren: Connor Casida (Sierra), Cameron Casida, Nicholas Ackerley, Matthew Ackerley, and Luke Ackerley; and nieces, Brooke and Lauren Ackerley.

Arrangements are under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri.

Obituary - Michelle Bolinn Hunt

Michelle Bolinn “Shelly” Hunt, age 45, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2022, at her home following an eight year battle with cancer. She was born October 14, 1976, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of James Louis Wehar and Stella May Holt Durossette. Shelly graduated from the Ft. Scott High School. She married Lawrence E. “Trey” Hunt III on June 27, 1998, at the Clayton Christian Church in Eve, Missouri. 

Shelly had worked in medical claims at several area insurance companies. She had last worked in claims for Care 4 All Home Medical Equipment. Shelly had a strong devotion to her family and her faith. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church. She will be remembered for her contagious smile, her adventurous spirit and her strong will. She loved everybody and never met a stranger.

Survivors include her husband, Trey and their daughter, Sam. Also surviving are three sisters, Sue, Bobby Ann and Button and three sisters-in-law, Kim, Tami, and Melinda as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, June Marie and a nephew.

There was cremation, A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 19th at the Community of Christ Church. Private burial will take place at a later date in the U. S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Community of Christ Youth Ministry and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Accidental shooting leaves 14 year old Butler boy dead

On Friday March 11, 2022 the Bates County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call in reference to an unresponsive juvenile male at a residence in rural Butler Missouri. 

On arrival Deputies made contact with the residents and was advised the male was on the floor in the kitchen. Deputies make contact with the juvenile to provide first aid. The male was found to be deceased at the time of contact.
 
During the investigation it was determined that there were two 14 year old males at the residence at the time of the incident. Prior to the 911 call the two had been outside shooting a pistol at targets. 

After shooting at the targets the two males brought the gun back into the house and was attempting to place it back in the gun safe when the gun discharged striking one of the juveniles. The gunshot proved to be fatal for the 14 year old male subject.

This case is still an open case but preliminarily indication that this was an accident in nature. The case is being investigated by the Bates County Sheriff's Office, Bates County Coroner's Office and the Bates County Juvenile Office.
 
Services are being provided to assist both families in this tragic incident. Our hearts and prayer go out both families

The weather looks wonderful for today and tomorrow. Highs temperatures reach the 60s today with most places reaching the 70s Wednesday.

Showers and t-storms move in Thursday afternoon and hang around through Friday morning. Many places could see 0.5" - 1" of rainfall.
