Obituary - Wanda Lee Houston Taute
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Butler Masonic Hall, 1203 N. Orange St. Butler. Services under the direction of Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009). Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Croix Hospice or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.
Wanda was born on April 17, 1934 in Mountain View, Missouri the daughter of Fred Houston and Lorene (Taber) Houston. She moved from Mountain View to Butler and worked as a waitress. When her lifelong friend, Alice Triplett McGuire, graduated from high school they moved together to Kansas City. Wanda worked at Sears and Hallmark while living in Kansas City.
On the weekends they would often come to Butler and stay with Wanda’s sisters. That is how she met her husband, Elmer John Taute. They were married for 63 years and have two children, John Curtis and Pam. Wanda babysat for children in her home for a time.
She loved any opportunity to spend time with children and spoiling them as much as she could especially her grandchildren. When John retired they joined the Moshowme camping club. They were members for over 20 years. With this group they traveled to many different places. They wintered in Texas and Arizona with friends from the club.
Wanda loved getting out of the cold for the winter but was always ready to get back home to her family. The bond that she had with her sisters was extremely strong. They have set an example of how family takes care of each other that has changed anyone that knows them. That love of family also included her best friend, Alice McGuire.
For several years Wanda and Alice walked through Butler every morning and would often end with coffee and breakfast at Koehn’s Bakery or McDonalds. Wanda will always be remembered for her willingness to help others.
She never wanted anyone to be concerned about her but always put the focus on taking care of everyone else. Over the past 1 ½ years Parkinson’s had made it very hard for her to get out and do things for herself. This was devastating for her but she still tried not to complain.
Throughout this last 1 ½ years she had the help of some amazing people, Kathy, Barbie, Sharon and Melissa, showed so much compassion and love and without their help she wouldn’t have been able to stay home.
The staff of St. Croix Hospice have been such a blessing to her as well. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer John Taute, parents, Fred Houston, Lorene and Archie Evins; sisters Florence Webb and Freda Morgan; brother in laws Jesse Thompson, Arvin Webb, Arthur Lee Jones, and Harold Sliffe; nephews Duane Webb, Danny Thompson, Doug Thompson and Mike Jones.
Survivors include her son John Taute of Butler; daughter and son-in-law Pam and Dan Sbisa of Blue Springs; grandchildren Thomas Sbisa of Blue Springs, Rachel and Brenton Caruthers of Phoenix; sisters Dora Thompson of Springfield and Susie and Vernon Gore, of Mountain View; sister in law Fern Sliffe of Butler; brother in law/ sister in law Verle and Grace Taute of Amoret; brother in law Harold Morgan of Butler; her lifelong friend Alice McGuire and many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family wants to thank everyone that has supported and cared for mom throughout this past year. There are no words that can express how much we appreciate each of you.
Papinville Set to Host Tour This Month

The Papinville Historical Association is hosting a tour of where Harmony Mission was located and Bates County first got started on April 30. We could not have the tour last year because of the flood. We are hoping the weather will cooperate this year. Many of you have preregistered for the tour and we will be calling you to make sure you can still do the tour.
The first tour will leave the Papinville Museum at 10 am and the second tour will leave at 1 pm. Be at the Museum 30 minutes before the tour leaves to pay for your tickets. Adult tickets are $12.00 and children 10 and under are $7.00.
The tour will begin at the museum to look at the dioramas of the Osage Village and Harmony Mission. You will ride on a wagon to the location of Harmony Mission, learn about the mission and where the buildings were located, eat a box lunch on the grounds and have time to walk on the grounds.
After you get back to the museum you will be served ice cream and cake to celebrate the 201st birthday of Harmony Mission and Missouri. Beverly Sullins will tell you the story of Asenath Barrows (wife of Freeman Barrows, the first county clerk of Bates county). If you have any questions she will be able to answer them or if you want a tour of the museum and school, she will be your guide.
If you would like to go on the tour and haven’t made a reservation, call these numbers: 417-395-2594 or 4`7-395-4288. Leave a message and phone number if we don’t answer and we will get back to you.
We will be adding more events for the day so keep listening to KMAM/KMOE 92.1, and look for news in the News-Shopper and online at MidAmericaLive.com.
Hope to see you in Papiniville on April 30. If you have never been to Harmony Mission where Bates County started, this is your chance.

Council Approves Green Area on the Butler Square
| Prolook Studio photo |
One of the original proposals included turning the property in to a ‘green area’ which would offer a grassy surface with park benches, historical markings, a stage for events and simply a nice place for folks to cool their heels while visiting the Butler square. Since Electric City Downtown originally floated the idea, it hadn’t come to fruition and in the meantime, adjacent landowner Brandon Plunknett (K&K Construction) offered to purchase the property for $1,750.00 with a promise to turn it into a green area while also making use of some of the space for his business. While Plunkett’s bid did drop to $500.00, the offer did include some $20,000.00 worth of dirt work, clean up, a memorial wall and other work done to put it in line with the original idea proposed by ECD.
During the council meeting last week however, representatives with Electric City Downtown and the the Butler Historic Preservation Commission pitched an improved version of their original plan that would include the previously mentioned items along with bringing back the historical murals that once were visible around the square.
The groups did ask the city if their proposal was accepted, would the city provide clean up and dirt fill that would be needed, and also noted that financing for the rest of the project would come from donations.
With two offers on the table, the council weighed that fact that Plunkett was offering to do the clean up, was a tax paying business and wanted to only use a portion of the lot. However, following a lengthy discussion, it was voted and approved to allow Electric City Downtown and the Butler Historic Preservation Commission to proceed with their plan providing that visible progress would be made, with the bulk of the project to be completed in an approximate one year time frame.
In other council news, long time city employees Trent Diehl, Rusty Campell and Melvin Ewing were recognized for their outstanding service to the city.
Also discussed was a problem with feral cats, while there is no direct ordinance regarding what to do about them, there is an ordinance regarding pets, creating a gray area when a resident chooses to feed them. City attorney Joe Lauber will get back with the council with recommendations.
The Butler police department and the Bates County Sheriff’s Office in a joint effort are proposing a gun range that would be located at the far South end of the fairgrounds property, as now both parties have to go to rural Adrian or Clinton for gun certification. There is concern that police being out of the area while doing this could make them not locally available if something were to happen and they would be needed here. At this time, information regarding insurance required for the range is being looked into. Note the range will be closed to the public.
The Butler fire department facility desperately needs attention, over the years water damage and corrosion are beginning to take their toll. While the building may need structural work at some point, right now fixing the roof will certainly help. The city currently has one bid for the work and it was decided to gather more bids before making a decision.
Guest Brandon Craft asked the council for permission to partially close Chestnut street directly behind city hall and have a beer garden on June 25th for festivities planned for Remington’s Heart Foundation. Permission granted.
The council also approved a contractual obligation with Kaysinger on a comprehensive plan, details forthcoming on that as well.
Remember the Butler city council meets on the first and third Tuesdays, 7 pm, upstairs at Butler city hall. An elevator is available for those with special needs.
