State Farm Student Athlete of the week

We are thrilled to announce this weeks State Farm Student Athlete of the week senior, Andon Cook. Andon is on the Boys Varsity golf team and was nominated by his Coach Leslie Hedrick. Coach Hedrick stated “Andon has been on the varsity bears golf team all four years in high school.

During that time he has medaled at numerous tournaments and went to the state golf tournament every year he has played. He was all state last year as he placed in the top 10.

He has had a solid start this year too medaling at every tournament so far and was top individual in two of our matches shooting an even-par 36 in a match against Nevada. What sets Andon apart on the golf team is his commitment to the game. He is always putting in the work and extra time to excel at golf. Just coming to golf practice during the season doesn’t make you a great golfer.

You have to practice year-round and Andon does that. He is truly a dedicated player and often stays after practice or even after competitions to work on his game.” When we asked Andon something he has learned from sports that he can apply later in life he stated “being involved in your school is like being involved in your community as an adult. When you are in sports as a student you want to do well and when you are an adult if you are involved in your community you will want to do well there too.” When we asked him what it takes to be successful as a player he stated “you have to put in the time.

You can’t put in just a little time and expect a great outcome. To be an elite athlete in your sport you have to keep putting in the time and not give up if things get tough.” When we asked him how he best prepares for a match he stated “it’s a lot of mental toughness and preparing yourself mentally to go out and do what you know you can and play how you have practiced.”

He says he puts in a lot of time recording his swing and studying it to keep getting better. Andon will be playing golf and attending Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri in the fall. He plans to major in physical education and hopes to coach one day.

Andon is the son of Sean and Sandy Cook. It was a pleasure talking to him and we wish him and the rest of the bears the best of luck as they finish out their season with district golf coming up in May.
