Obituary - Marilyn Janice Paul

Marilyn Janice Paul, 90, Schell City, MO passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada, MO. Marilyn was born July 31, 1931 in Stanton, IA to Richard R. and Mildred (Eckland) Moberly. She was united in marriage to Robert Paul on July 19, 1959 in Kansas City, MO and he preceded her in death in 2016.

Marilyn was raised in Nebraska and graduated from Campbell High School in Campbell, NE. She lived most of her adult life in Overland Park, KS. Marilyn worked for 25 years at Clothing Concepts in Lenexa, KS. For the past six years she has resided in Schell City, MO. She was a member of Holy Cross Church in Overland Park.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Paul, Schell City, and Brian Paul (Lori), Indianapolis, IN; three grandsons, Travis Paul, Robert Paul, and Brian Paul; a sister, Phyllis Benson (Gerald), Minneapolis, MN; and a nephew, Kurt Benson, Minneapolis, MN.

A private committal service will be held at Resurrection Cemetery in Overland Park, KS.

Broken Arrow Oklahoma man arrested in Bates County

On May 14th around 3:22 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 31 year old Christopher J. Phifer of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Mr. Phifer was arrested for 1.) Driving While Intoxicated - Drugs 2.) Speeding 3.) Following too close.

Christopher J. Phifer was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and was later released.

Adrian man arrested in Bates County

On May 14th around 11:57 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County arrested 52 year old Jerry D. Bradley of Adrian, Missouri.

Mr. Bradley was arrested for 1.) Driving While Intoxicated 2.) Leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident 3.) Careless and Imprudent Driving resulting in a motor vehicle accident 4.) No Seatbelt.

Jerry D. Bradley was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and he was later released.

Obituary - Dennis Ray Williams

Dennis Ray Williams, known to his friends and family as Denny (or sometimes “Bubba”), passed away on May 12, 2022, aged 73.

Denny was born September 15th, 1948 to Ray and Ernestine Williams in Butler, Missouri and lived his whole life happily in Rich Hill, Missouri.

After finishing school, Denny served in the US Army during the Vietnam War in 1968-1969 in the 509th Engineering Corps. After completing his tour in the armed forces, Denny returned to Rich Hill, where he met Margaret Woodall. They fell in love and in 1972 were married, and they remained so for 50 years.

Denny is a beloved father, grandfather, and husband; as well as a renown fisherman, outdoorsman, and friend to many people in the community. He enjoyed spending his time on the river, fishing with his friends, or in the restaurant telling stories, laughing, and having a good time.

Denny is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, and their two children, Dustan and Brandi, Denny’s brother Jerry and his wife Tammy and their two children, Jacob and Lisa, and their grandchildren. Denny is survived by his loving grandchildren, Darren and his wife Taylor and their daughter Myla, Dakota and his wife Brittany, and Kierston and Caleb, and countless family members and friends in the community.

Celebration of Life visitation will be Monday May 16th at 9am at the Heuser Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow at 11 am at the Green Lawn Cemetery.

Obituary - Teresa Ann Cargill

Teresa Ann Cargill, 56, Bethany, MO passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at her home in Bethany. Teresa was born May 27, 1965 in Nevada, MO to Robert and Gloria J. (Farmer) Cargill, Jr.

Teresa is survived by three brothers, Ron Cargill, Rick Cargill, and Dan Cargill, all of Nevada; and a half-brother, Alfred Snowden, also of Nevada; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father.

Pittsburg Kansas woman shot to death, second woman hospitalized, suspect arrested

On Friday, May 13, 2022 at approximately 10:45 p.m., numerous 911 calls came into the Pittsburg Police Department dispatch center from citizens reporting multiple gunshots in the area of the 100 block of West 23rd Street. 

Officers responded to the area and upon arrival located two female victims. Officers attempted to render medical aid to 40-year-old Stephanie Marie Short, of Pittsburg, who appeared to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and Ms. Short was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Another 46-year-old female, identified as Velma Marie Cubie, of Kansas City, Missouri, was also found to have sustained injury as a result of gunfire. She was transported to Ascension Via Christi Hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Initial investigation into this incident led to the identification of a suspect, 39-year-old James Cornell Hamilton, of Pittsburg. Hamilton was taken into custody by a Crawford County Deputy at the scene. He was taken to the Pittsburg Police Department for questioning related to this incident. Hamilton was later transported to the Crawford County Jail where he was booked in on one count of murder in the first degree and one count of attempted murder in the first degree. A request has been made for Hamilton to be held without bond.

Pittsburg Police, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office continue to actively investigate this incident.
