Motorcycle accident in Vernon County

On June 16th around 1:00 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Vernon County along with Vernon County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a motorcycle accident on Route H around 1 mile east of Richards, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the eastbound 2021 Honda Motorcycle driven by 51 year old David W. Utter of Richards, Missouri ran off the side of the roadway, overturned and ejected the driver.

Mr. Utter sustained moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Nevada Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Obituary - Betty Stromberg

Betty Stromberg, age 86, of Clinton, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. A graveside service will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri. 

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Henry County Memory Fund and can be left in care of the funeral home.

Betty was born June 25, 1936 in St. Joe, Missouri the daughter of Walter and Hattie (Kerns) Miller. Betty loved her Girls and her Church. She was a faithful member of the First Assembly of God Church of Clinton, Missouri.

Betty loved being around and spending time with her family. She loved watching Game Shows, The Andy Griffith Show, and The Golden Girls were some of her favorites.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Charles Stromberg, her daughters, Jo Stromberg and Rhonda Diehl, 5 brothers and sisters, and her parents.

Survivors include daughters; Rose Goth (Darrell) of Racket, MO, Cheryl Sherrer (John) of Clinton, MO, 11 grandchildren, and 22 grandchildren.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton, Missouri.

Obituary - Norman “Don” Miller

Norman “Don” Miller, age 79, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Thursday, June 16, 2022, at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada, MO. He was born July 26, 1942, in Ft. Scott, the son of Roy and Leora Heitz Miller. 

He graduated from FSHS with the class of 1960 where he played sports and was a self-proclaimed terrible student. He attended JUCO in Ft. Scott prior to entering service in the U. S. Army. 

Following the Army, Don graduated from Pittsburg State University with a master’s in education. He married Shauneen Bond on August 29, 1964, in Ft. Scott. She preceded him in death on January 25, 2007. He began his teaching and coaching career in Coffeyville, KS. 

After moving back to Ft. Scott, Don taught at the Junior High School and Ft. Scott JUCO. His teaching and coaching career garnered many awards including Master Teacher Award 1981, and the Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame 2001. He established the middle school Pride Program as well as Washington Workshop. He was a member of KNEA, served as HPA board President and was a member of Community Christian Church. Don’s sense of humor never failed when reminiscing with former students and athletes.

Survivors include two daughters, Tanya Miller, Ft. Scott, and Erin Ponte and husband Brian, Fresno, CA; a sister, Diane Yager, Smithville, MO; a granddaughter, Madison Ponte as well as Tanner, Brityn, Beckham, and Jordy Fox; and nieces and nephews Kim Boham, David Bond, Lindsay Schossow, Morgan Boham, Elise Yager, Kristy Yager, Tony Yager, Justin Parks, Stacey Snodgrass, and Laurie Short. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Connie Miller Parks, and Sharon Short; and his parents.

Rev. Dusty Drake will conduct funeral services at 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 21st, at the Community Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. A memorial gathering will take place at 6:30 PM Monday June 20th, at the Ft. Scott Middle School, with casual “Tiger” gear encouraged. Memorials are suggested to either HPA or the Don Miller Scholarship Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main St., Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Last month Nevada Regional Medical Center's Amber Brundridge, CRT, was nominated by the Missouri Southern State University Respiratory Therapy Program students for the Clinical Preceptor Award.

This clinical award honors a preceptor who demonstrates commitment to excellence in clinical education, has an exemplary positive attitude, and shows professionalism in the workplace.

The individual honored must demonstrate a broad knowledge of respiratory concepts and skills, be able to explain the basis for actions and decisions made in patient care and be able to connect information to broader concepts.

They should also be able to answer students’ questions in a clear and concise manner and communicate clear goals and expectations.

We are all so proud of Amber for exemplifying all of these traits and for receiving this prestigious nomination.

3rd Annual Screamin' Lehmann Memorial Race at Nevada Speedway set for June 25th

3rd Annual Screamin' Lehmann Memorial:

Nevada, MO (6/16/22) The POWRi sanctioned Super Stocks will compete in a 25-Lap A-Feature event at the historic quarter mile bullring for a top prize of at least $1,000 to win and $50 to start feature event. 

More sponsors are being added, so the payout will more than likely raise to more than $50 to start. You may keep an eye on Nevada Speedway's Facebook page for the latest details.
 
Nevada Speedway will be racing in remembrance of Karl Lehmann, who grew up at Nevada Speedway and left a legacy on the track and touched the lives of many.
 
POWRi points will be awarded to the Super Stock class for this event, but no track points will be earned.

Last year, a grand total of 28 super stocks signed in to do battle and John Coats from Joplin, Missouri would come through the field to take home the big pay day.
 
Gates will open at 4:30, Hot Laps at 7:00 with Racing underway at 7:30.
 
Super Stock drivers will have a $50 pit pass fee for this event. This fee will include a transponder to use.
 
Nevada Speedway in conveniently located right off of I-49 in Nevada, Missouri, only about two hours from the Arkansas state line and about an hour and half from the Kansas City metro.

Obituary - Betty Lou (Alkire) Black

Betty Lou (Alkire) Black, age 83, of Hermitage, Missouri, formerly of Rich Hill, Missouri passed away June 9, 2022 at Citizen Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Missouri. 

Betty was born in Passaic, Missouri, the daughter of Daley F. and Bessie (Polson) Alkire on May 27, 1939. Betty was united in marriage to Charles Eugene Black; to this union three children were born.

Betty worked in the food service industry and retired from her daughter’s restaurant in Hermitage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; her daughter, Anita Heckadon; her son, Charlie Black; and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by one daughter, Jeanie & Mike West of Rich Hill; son-in-law, Dennis Heckadon of Hermitage, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Christy Black of Rich Hill; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Patsey Quick of Butler, Missouri.

Graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 18th at Salem Cemetery in Foster, Missouri. Arrangements under the direction of Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, Missouri.
