Notice is hereby given that a Primary Election will be held in the County of Bates on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, for the purpose of voting on candidates and ballot issues. 

The official ballot for the election will be in substantially the following form:

The polling places for the election will be:

The polling places will be open from the hours of 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. during which time any person properly registered to vote in the County of Bates and has an acceptable form of ID, will be given the opportunity to cast his or her ballot.

2022 Bates County Fair in full swing!

The Bates County Fair Parade was held yesterday despite the triple digit heat and high humidity the crowd seem to enjoy the parade and the kids had candy for days.

The fair will continue throughout the week with the Beta Sigma Phi's Annual Baby Contest set for tonight July 6th and the Super teen event will follow. On Thursday evening July 7th there will be a MSTPA Tractor Pull in the arena starting at 7:00 p.m.

Obituary - Janice Ilene Pent

Janice Ilene Pent, age 76, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the Via Christi Emergency Room. She was born July 17, 1945, in Ft. Scott, the daughter of Ivan Louis and Alice Faye Embry Smith. She married Richard Pent on January 9, 1963, in Nevada, MO. 

He preceded her in death on July 15, 1994. Janice was an avid KC Royals and Chiefs fan. To say Patrick Mahomes was her favorite is an understatement. She enjoyed reading novels and watching game shows. Janice was a very giving person who always had an open door for those in need. She was a loving and caring grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Survivors include 2 daughters Ronda Eastwood and husband Dan, Ft. Scott, and Tracy Jordan and Kevin Gray, Cincinnati, OH; a son, Patrick Pent and wife Lisa, Ottawa, KS; a brother, Billy Smith and wife Linda, CA; 10 grandchildren, Ashley, Derek, Mitchell, Danielle, Jordan, Taylor, Kelsey, Amber, Cameron, and Jacob; 22 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and finally, her beloved cat Ebony. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard “Ricky” Pent; a daughter, Angela Pent; 4 brothers, Donald, Neil, Harold, and Gary Smith; 2 sisters, Rosalie Cox, and Joyce Johnson; and her parents.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Friday, July 8th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 11:00 until 1:00 at the funeral home. Chiefs and Royals attire is encouraged. Memorials are suggested to the Janice Pent Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main St., Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

The excessive heat warning is in effect through Thursday along and south of the MO River for heat indices between 103-109. A heat advisory is in effect for counties between the MO River and HWY 36 for heat indices between 100-105.

This contest is for 7th grade through 12th grade participants. At least two team members must be a FFA or 4H member in good standing in Bates County. This contest will also include members from Appleton City FFA, Archie FFA, and Drexel FFA. Sign ups will begin around 6:00 pm.

Obituary - Jay Warren Borders

Jay Warren Borders, 90, Nevada, MO, passed away on Monday, July 5, 2022, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. Jay was born August 14, 1931, to O. Edward and Iva R. (Carey) Borders. 

He married Jeannette Ruby Nicely on September 2, 1950, and she preceded him in death on June 19, 2008. He then married Joan Hensley on June 27, 2009, and she preceded him in death on June 30, 2018.

Jay grew up in Kansas City, KS, and graduated from Argentine High School in 1948. He was also a graduate of what is now Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO, and he attended both William Jewell College and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Through the years, Jay worked at TWA, as a school teacher in Schell City and Walker and as a psychiatric social worker at the Nevada State Hospital, but perhaps his most important calling was that of a pastor, spreading the gospel and the message of salvation brought through Jesus Christ. He pastored Mt. Olive church in Florence MO, Kings Point in Lockwood, MO, and churches in Hume, Oronogo, Purdy and Deerfield MO, as well as Arthur and Bethel Baptist churches near Nevada, and his last pastorate was at Bronaugh Baptist Church. Jay also served at different times as the music director at Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a member at the time of his death.

Jay is survived by three children, Joy Cottle (Randy) Seymour, MO; Janet Jacques (Marc), North Charleston, SC; and Jim Borders (Aletta), Nevada, MO; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Borders, El Dorado Springs, MO; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, 35 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, a brother, Lee Borders (Arlene), Chillicothe, MO, a sister-in-law, Joyce Borders, Smithville, TX, as well as Joan’s children, Shirley, Bennie, Betty , Valerie, Doug, Becky and Shawn, and their spouses, children and grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends. In addition to his wives, Jay was also preceded in death by his son, Jay Borders, Jr., in 2015, three brothers, Dick, Neil and Keith Borders, and a sister, Vivian Hughes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2022 at Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada with Pastor Terry Mosher officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Debra Bledsoe Memorial Health Scholarship

The family of Debra Bledsoe are proud to present the 2022 Debra Bledsoe Memorial Health Scholarship to Makenna Hummel of Adrian. Makenna, daughter of David Hummel, is a 2020 graduate of Adrian High School. 

She has been accepted into the Diagnostic Medical Imaging Program at Cox Heath in Springfield where she will complete her Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Imaging. 

Presenting Makenna with the scholarship check is Jody Welston on behalf of the family.
