Clinton Intermediate School hires new 5th grade teacher

Let's give a great big Clinton Cardinal welcome to Hillary Hurtado. Ms. Hurtado will be a 5th grade teacher at Clinton Intermediate School this fall.

Hillary grew up in Garden City, KS and just recently moved to Missouri to be closer to family. She has a degree in Elementary Education Unified from Pittsburg State University and has three years of teaching experience.

In her free time Ms. Hurtado enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, painting or participating in Bible studies with her church.

"I'm excited to get to know the students and work with the incredible staff here in the Clinton School District!"

Obituary - Patricia Ann Hazelbaker

Patricia Ann Hazelbaker-Hammer, age 82 formerly of Butler, Missouri passed away at her home in Pleasanton, Kansas on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. She was born the daughter of Irene Davis-Frye on September 23, 1939 in Marion, Indiana. Patricia was in the Jaycee Jaynes, a member of the Eastern Star and Pleasanton Saddle Club.

She enjoyed doing puzzles and puzzle books, cooking. Patricia took care of everyone, if you needed something you went to grannie's. Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, long time love and companion of 43 years, Dean Hammer. She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Ratty and Cathy Kump, a brother, Jim Frye, a step-brother, Kenny Sabine, a step-sister, Marietta Sabine, seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, July 10, 2022 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until service time. BCMH: Happy Retirement Dr. Mark Galant

Today we gathered to wish Dr. Mark Galant a happy retirement.

Dr. Galant was the lead physician of the hospitalist program when BCMH first adopted it in 2015 in collaboration with Saint Luke's Health System and Saint Luke's Physician Specialists.

This program brought a more advanced level of inpatient care to the community, and we thank Dr. Galant for this service.

Obituary - Cheryl Marie Putthoff

Cheryl Marie Putthoff, age 76, of Peculiar, Missouri passed away July 2, 2022 peacefully at Foxwood Spring Living Center surrounded by her loving family.

A celebration of life visitation will be held 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at Cullen Funeral Home 612 W. Foxwood Dr., Raymore, Missouri 64083.

Cheryl was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 7, 1946 to Wilmer Gaddy and Evon Bowles. She was one of four children, along with two brothers, Bill and Lloyd and one sister, Diane. In the Spring of 1969, she was joined in marriage to her loving husband, Phil Putthoff on April 18th. Their union was blessed with two children, Debra and Philip.

In life, Cheryl worked as a Lab Technician for HPS Laboratories for many years alongside raising her family. She loved spending her spare time with her grandchildren. She also loved to travel, watch horse races and to play with her dogs.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; her two brothers, Bill and Lloyd Gaddy; and her sister, Diane Lowe.

She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Phil Putthoff; daughter, Debra Shumaker (Kenny); son, Philip Putthoff (Kelly); five grandchildren, Josh, Emily, Haley (Brendan), Zach (Ashley), and Dalton; and two great grandchildren, Eli and Olivia.

Obituary - Henry Eugene Clay

Henry Eugene Clay, age 75, Burlington, Kansas passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022.  He was born on December 13, 1946 in Mound City, Kansas the son of Henry T. and Iva Mae Dean Clay.  He graduated from De Soto, Kansas High School.  He served his country in the United States Navy during Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star.  

He was united in marriage to Minda Sue McDaniel on August 31, 1979.  She preceded him in death on October 29, 2011.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, and three sisters, Janet and Sandra Clay, and Sharlene Snovelle.  

Henry enjoyed fishing, buying things to fix up, watching baseball and football and computer games.  He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Thomas(Justin), and Nancy Clay, three brothers, Jack Clay, Dean Clay, and Rick Clay, two sisters, Linda Sallaz and Betty Strout, and several grandchildren.  

Funeral service will be 11 am Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel.  Burial will be in the Richland Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 10 am to service time at the Chapel.  Individual respects and guest registry can be made from 9 am to 4 pm Monday at the Mound City Chapel.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Disabled American Veterans.  Online condolences can be left at www.schneider funerals.com.  

Update: Fatality accident Tuesday afternoon in Vernon County

On July 5th around 1:15 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Vernon County along with Vernon County Sheriff's Deputies and several emergency personnel responded to a fatality accident on I-49 around 3 miles north of Nevada near the Compton Junction Exit.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2017 Nissan Altima driven by Naomi S. Bealer of Van Buren, Arkansas was traveling southbound, crossed the center of the median and into the northbound lane striking the 2020 Hyundai Tuscon driven by 25 year old Maria F. Campos of Houston, Texas.

A third vehicle a 2019 Honda Pilot driven by 67 year old Stephen L. Schafer of Lees Summit, Missouri attempted to avoid hitting this accident and travelled into the median striking the Nissan on the drivers side door. The Nissan then caught on fire. 

Naomi S. Bealer was pronounced dead at the scene of this accident and her body was transported to Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Two other people in the Honda 67 year old Stephen L. Schafer of Lees Summit, Missouri and 64 year old Brenda L. Schafer both sustained serious injuries in this accident and both were transported to St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.

This is Troop D of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 53rd Fatality accident of the year 2022.
