Vehicle fire last night in Belton

On July 29th the Belton Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the area of South Scott and Ella Street.

The fire cause appears to have been accidental and the car was a total loss.

Obituary - Thelma L. Smith

Thelma L. Smith, age 83 of Rich Hill, Missouri passed away July 25, 2022 at her home. 

Thelma is survived ay eight children, Kathy (Rick) Marquez, Connie (Gary) Boyles, Debbie (Richard) Smith, Larry (Debbie) Davidson, Gail Jagger, Twila (Robert) Holmes, Brenda Ross, Susie (Kirby) Davidson, one sister, Donna Robinson, one sister-in-law, Carol Breshears, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great great grandson.

Graveside services and family visitation will be held August 9, 2022 at the Heuser Funeral Home. 

Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until service time. Graveside service will follow at 11:00 am at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Rich Hill.

Update: Crash on I-49 in Bates County seriously injures Belton teen

On July 28th around 4:57 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies and Bates County EMS responded to a one vehicle rollover accident in the northbound lanes of I-49 near mile marker 123.8 north of Rich Hill.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 44 year old Loria M. Fones of Beebe, Arkansas attempted to make a lane change on uneven lanes, overcorrected and then traveled off the left side of the roadway, before returning to the road spinning out and striking the west guardrail before overturning.

Loria M. Fones sustained minor injuries and she will seek her own medical treatment at a later time.

The passenger in her vehicle a 13 year old female juvenile from Belton sustained serious injuries and was transported by Life Flight to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.

Parker's Party set for August 7th on the Butler Square

BCMH is shining the Auxiliary Spotlight today on Norman Black. Norman volunteers three days a week for the hospital. 

A retired nurse, pastor and educator, Norman recently added published author to his list of accomplishments with his book, “A Merry Heart”, a compilation of clean, funny stories. 

If you’ve met Norm, you’ll know he has a gift for supplying an appropriate joke for every occasion. “A Merry Heart” is now available on a consignment basis in the Auxiliary Gift Shop. 

BCMH appreciates Norman, and all of our volunteers, for lending humanity and heart to the patient and employee experience at our hospital.

Obituary - Susan Jane Thornton

Susan Jane Thornton, 59, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022, at her home in rural Nevada, MO. Susan was born October 9, 1962, in Butler, MO to Lester and Carolyn (Gray) Thornton.

Susan grew up in Butler and Archie, MO and graduated high school in Savannah, MO. She received her bachelor’s degree at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO and completed graduate studies at East Texas State University, earning her master’s degree.

She worked as an executive assistant for Elk Electric in Austin, TX, as librarian at the University of Texas, and most recently as Cottey College librarian. Susan lived on the farm where she could enjoy her love for animals.

Survivors include her siblings, Michael Thornton, Nevada; Shirley Garnett, Nevada; Mark Thornton (Joan), Plano, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews, which she affectionately referred to as “her niecews”. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mark Theriac; infant sister, Marilyn Jane Thornton; sister-in-law, Jenny Thornton; and brother-in-law, Jim Garnett.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Pastor Michelle Whitlock will officiate. Memorial contributions made be made to a charity of choice in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Traffic Alert: I-49 slowed due to accident near Rich Hill

Several Emergency Personnel is on scene of a motor vehicle accident north of Rich Hill in the northbound lanes of traffic near Mile Marker 123 on I-49 at this time.

Please find a alternate route around this area as traffic is backed up.
