While Mid America Live works to maintain a non biased news source, we are frequently asked to post opinion based articles.

Our policy is that we will post those those “letters to the editor” of political nature in the Mid America Live news feed as well as on Facebook page as a paid advertisement for a prepaid $10 fee.

Our preference is the article be limited to about 500 words or less.

We will add ‘Paid for by______’ to all published submissions.

Hot weather returning

 It is a nice Sunday afternoon with temps in the upper 80s across the region. A few isolated showers, maybe a thunderstorm, is possible over the next few hours.

Hot and muggy conditions return this week with heat index values surpassing 100F.


Obituary - Janet L. Toms

Janet L. Toms, age 69, Pleasanton, Kansas passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2022. She was born on May 25, 1953 in Paola, Kansas to Kenneth and Fontella Butler Stainbrook. She graduated from Prairie View High School and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Pittsburg State University.

Janet was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Terry Toms on July 3, 1976. Her family was her whole world and she loved them well. She had a special love for each of her grandchildren and she made sure they knew how much she cared.

She spent many hours sitting in bleachers watching sporting events, attending art and music shows, and helping them with projects or homework. Her grandkids always looked forward to sleepovers because she would spoil them with fun on the farm and plenty of sweets. Janet had a difficult time sitting still, but she would spend hours crocheting, making blankets for each of her kids and grandkids. Janet was an educator for 20 years where she taught her students a love for reading. She taught life lessons from books about empathy, kindness, and resiliency.

She loved each of her students and would have done anything for them. She taught her students the importance of giving back and was instrumental in forming the Angel Tree Program. Janet is survived by her husband, Terry, two sons, Justin Toms(Theresa), and Jason Toms(Ashley), a daughter, Tara McGregor, two sisters, JoAnn Stainbrook and Kendra Patterson, and nine grandchildren, Aiyana, Jayce, Teyah, Aedin, Azaiah, Jaylin, Jaxson, Jazzmyne, and Juliana.

Funeral service will be 10 am Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at the Mound City First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, La Cygne, Kansas. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 pm Monday, August 1, 2022 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to Pleasanton Elementary Library. Obituary - Travis Denney

Travis Denney, Milo, MO, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at his home. Travis was born on June 26, 1978 in Lamar, MO to John David Denney and Linda Kay (Hornecker) Denney.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at the Sheldon Christian Church, Sheldon, MO. 

Interment will follow in the Sheldon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Ferry Funeral Home.

Car hauler fire on I-49 near Lamar

This morning about 8:30 the Lamar Fire Department was dispatched to a semi on fire hauling cars at the Vernon/Barton county line on I-49. Upon arrival the semi and its load were engulfed in flames. 

It took about a hour to extinguish plus about another hour to find and extinguish any hot spots.

Obituary - Tanner Robert Brown

Tanner Robert Brown, age 37, of Warsaw, Missouri, formally of Fredericksburg, Iowa, passed away July 25, 2022 in his home. Tanner was born on October 19, 1984 in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of David and Sharon Brown.

Tanner grew up in Fredericksburg, Iowa where he graduated from Fredericksburg High School Class of 2002. Tanner proudly served as the team manager for the 2001 Fredericksburg High School State Championship Football team.

Following high school, Tanner worked in the restaurant industry where he worked at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana, Iowa. He enjoyed working and always was excited when he would be called in to work an extra shift.

Tanner was a happy kid who also enjoyed volunteering his time at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He loved being with the veterans, he loved his family, playing cards and was always joking around. He cherished his cat “Buddy” and his puppy “Maddie Jo”.

He is preceded in death by his infant brother, Jaydon Michael Brown, his maternal grandparents, Helmuth and Carolyne Bartels and an uncle, Wyatt Yearous.

He is survived by his parents, David and Sharon Brown, of Newton Iowa, one brother, Joshua Brown and his wife Abby, of Warsaw, Missouri, one sister, Kimberly Brown, of Bolivar, Missouri, 4 nieces and nephews, Emma, Skyler, Cayden and Jade, other relatives, loved ones and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date near Warsaw, Missouri and Fredericksburg, Iowa. Arrangements have been entrusted to Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, Missouri. Memorial contributions can be made to the Osage Valley Fire Department, Women's Auxiliary c/o Reser Funeral Home, P.O. Box 910, Warsaw, Missouri 65355.

Obituary - Judy L. Wheeldon

Judy L. Wheeldon, 78, of Garden City, was born, December 5, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of William A. and Lorene (Williams) Jennings. She departed this life, Friday, July 22, 2022, at the Pleasant Hill Heath and Rehabilitation Center.

Judy was a homemaker.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Lanetta Habermehl; and three sisters, Lorene June Griffin, Donna True, and Mary Rasco.

She is survived by her daughter, Ciara Golden of Lathrop; one grandson, Kendall Habermehl of Garden City; one brother George Jennings of Holden; one sister, Loretta Turpin of Porum, Oklahoma; other relatives and friends.

Cremation has been accorded. No services are scheduled.
