Temperatures heating back up for the weekend

Hot and humid conditions return tomorrow and continue through the weekend. So once again, please take precautions if you will be out in the heat this weekend to help prevent any heat related illness.



Obituary - William Leroy Good

William Leroy Good, 65, of Nevada, MO passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler, MO following an illness of several months. Bill was born in Ft. Scott, KS on November 27, 1956 to William Clark and Francis Marie (Wells) Good. He married Sheryl Monday on August 16, 1990 in Nevada and she preceded him in death on March 18, 2015.

Bill was raised in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School Class of 1975. He began working as a greenskeeper for the new Country Club while in high school. He became superintendent and worked full time until 2016 and then continued working part time until 2021.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his family and especially “loved his grandchildren”. He was also an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed watching the games on TV. Bill was a member of the undefeated 1973 Nevada High School football team.

Survivors include his children, Amanda Williams, daughter, and her husband, Wade, Tulsa, OK, William Justin Good, Nevada, Amber Bravo, Nevada, and William Craig Good, Springfield, MO; grandchildren Tristen Williams, Kaitlyn Williams, Piper Williams, William Colton Good, William Levin Good, Michael Long, Bryson Long, William Nathan Good, Trinity Good, Temperance Good, Jayda Clark, Marco Bravo, Jr., and Ysidra Bravo; great-grandchildren, William Kayden Good, Liam Good, and Sylvie Good; his mother, Francis Good, Nevada; and one brother, Gary Good, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheryl, and his father, William Clark Good.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with Pastor Roger Beach officiating. Inurnment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Obituary - Janet Ruth Snead

Janet Ruth Snead, 83, Nevada, MO passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO. Janet was born July 6, 1939 in Schell City, MO to John T. and Clarcie E. (Andrews) Loveless. She was united in marriage to William Roscoe Snead, and he preceded her in death in 2004.

Janet was raised in Schell City and later Joplin. She attended school through the 8th grade and then helped her family on the family dairy farm in Nevada. Janet was a member of the New Testament Church. She enjoyed being with her family and attending rodeos, was very patriotic and had a love of fireworks.

Survivors include two children, Dale Snead, Nevada, MO, and Gwen Snead, Nevada, MO; four grandchildren, Jenna Cracraft (Jeremy), Moundville, Jessi Hall (Sage), Uniontown, KS, Jayne Snead, Nevada, MO, and Chelsea Ogburn (Jackson), Nevada, MO; five great-grandchildren, Laney Cracraft, Wyatt Cracraft, Chet Cracraft, Sylvia Hall, and Kalea Hall. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Gail Snead; one son, Gene Roscoe Snead; an infant sister, Iris Irene; and a daughter-in-law, Trudy Snead.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 8, 2022 at Moore Cemetery in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7th at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Obituary - Jean Garrison

Jean Garrison, 97, of Adrian, MO passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Medicalodge of Butler. Funeral Services will be on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Atkinson Funeral Home, with a visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Crescent Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Lt. Charles Garrison Veterans Memorial or Adrian Christian Church or Happy Hill Church of God.

Jean was born March 13, 1925 to Lawrence Thompson and Florence (Howe) Thompson in Altona, MO. She started off life by surviving being born at only three pounds but it did not stop her from living a full life. Jean grew up east of Adrian in the Ballard area and was a proud graduate of Ballard schools. She married Emsley Garrison on December 9, 1950 and held down the occupation of Farmer's wife, helping do whatever was needed around the farm. She was a faithful attender of Adrian Christian Church and then Happy Hill Church of God later in her life. Jean was a very good cook and could feed an army with some of her meals she prepared; making sure no one went away hungry. Making sure her yard was that of golf course appearance was a top priority for her and she loved growing and tending to flowers. It was not unusual to see her spending time with two close and dear friends, Lavaun and Isabelle, but her greatest joy, and the way she would spend most of her time, was with her family. She loved all of her family dearly and the little ones always had a dear place in her heart.

Jean is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emsley; daughter, Billie Jo Diehl; brother Thomas "Bud" Glenn Thompson; and sisters: Hazel Shelton and Christine Dobson. She is survived by grandchildren: Bryon (Elaine) Diehl and Shelli (Doug) White; her 6 great-grandchildren: Emsley Matthew (Gerry) Diehl, Courtney Diehl (Trevor), Erik (Jacey) White, Tayler (Drew) Feldman, Brendin (Samantha) White, and Madison Petty; her 10 great-great-grandchildren: Norah Gregg, Brantly Diehl, Aiden Diehl, Abel Petty, Emery Gregg, Adaline Diehl, Stella Petty, Trixie White, Wrenn Feldman, Enzo White; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson involved in minor accident in Texas County

On August 3rd around 9:05 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Texas County along with Texas County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident on Missouri 17 Highway around 2 miles west of Summersville, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2020 Chevrolet Impala driven by 47 year old Harold "Chad" Anderson of Butler, Missouri struck a deer in the roadway.

Sheriff Anderson sustained moderate injuries in this accident and he was transported by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Missouri for treatment.


Obituary - Thomas Edwin Powell

Thomas Edwin Powell, age 82, resident of Ft. Scott, KS, died Wednesday, August 03, 2022, at his home. He was born June 21, 1940, in Hiattville, KS, the son of Albert and Sara Hixon Powell. 

He married Beatrice June Combs on July 3, 1959, in Ft. Scott. She preceded him in death on November 22, 2020. Tom worked for the Ft. Scott Fire Department for 30 years.

He operated his own ranch for 50 years. Tom also owned and operated Fort Scott Motors on Wall Street. He was a hard working yet loving man. He loved spending time with his family on Sunday afternoons. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Jerry Powell, Ft. Scott, Sherri Clark and husband Myron, Mt. Pleasant, NC, and Melany Felt, Ft. Scott; 2 sisters, Mary Estenson, Americus, KS, and Anna Smith, Ft. Scott; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Powell, Jr., 2 grandsons, Scott Felt and Joe Johnson, and 4 brothers, George, Joe, Wayne, and Don Powell.

Rev. Ken Ansell will conduct funeral services at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 6th, at the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Lath Branch Cemetery.

Butler man seriously injured in Polk County crash

On August 3rd around 2:30 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Polk County along with the Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to a two vehicle crash on MO 123 around 1 mile south of Fair Play.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the northbound 2001 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 35 year old Justin R. Keene of Butler, Missouri crossed the centerline and struck the southbound 2015 Peterbilt driven by 57 year old Clark Bell of Bolivar, Missouri.

Justin R. Keene sustained serious injuries and he was transported by ambulance to Nevada Regional Medical Center for treatment.
