Football Jamboree tonight in Archie at 7pm

It's FRIDAY. You all know what that means!

Archie is hosting the Jamboree tonight beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Sports Complex!

Archie and Appleton City will be on the West sideline. Rich Hill and Osceola will be on the East sideline.

There are a few showers and isolated thunderstorms out there already this morning however, these will not be severe. 

This afternoon through this evening (3PM-8PM) scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop and a few of these may be strong to severe. 

The main threats will be for hail up to the size of a quarter and wind gusts to 50 to 60 mph.

Obituary - Margaret Lucille Leatherman

Margaret Lucille Leatherman, age 91, a former resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, and more recently of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at the Communities of Wildwood in Joplin. She was born October 25, 1930, in Deerfield, Missouri, the daughter of Norman Louis Pettibon and Lucille Pilcher Pettibon.

Margaret graduated from the Nevada High School and the Ft. Scott Junior College. She went on to receive a teaching certificate from Pittsburg State Teachers College. Prior to her marriage, Margaret taught at both the Mapleton, Kansas grade school and the Lath Branch School east of Ft. Scott.

Margaret married Donald Leatherman on May 11, 1952, in rural Deerfield, Missouri. Together, they owned and operated their own farm for many years. After her children were grown, she worked for a time at Master Printers and for Sears in Ft. Scott. Margaret was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and tending her flowers. She was a longtime member of the First Southern Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was active with the Awana program.

Survivors include three sons, Tom Leatherman (Connie) of Deerfield, Missouri, Steve Leatherman (Debbie) of Joplin, Missouri and Mark Leatherman (Leanne) of Ft. Scott, Kansas, ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a son-in-law, David Cannon of Louisburg, Kansas and a sister, Norma Yoos, also of Joplin. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Don, on January 7, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Beth Cannon and her sister, Beverly Davis.

Pastor Clarence Newman will conduct funeral services at 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 22nd at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Clarksburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 P.M. Sunday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First Southern Baptist Church or to Care to Share and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft Scott, KS 66701. Death Investigation after female dies in Lamar

On 08/18/22 at 02:55am officers of the Lamar Police Department were dispatched to an address in the 1100 block of Allen St for an adult female possibly not breathing.

Upon arrival first responders began life saving measures and the female was transported to Cox Barton County by Barton County Ambulance where she later died. The deceased has been identified as Beatrys Adriana Moreno Martinez, age 35, of Thousand Palms California.

The next of kin have been notified. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow in Springfield. The investigation is currently on going.

K-68 resurfacing project to start in Miami County

K-68 resurfacing project to start in Miami County

Wednesday, Aug. 24, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) expects to start a resurfacing project on K-68 from U.S. 69 east to the Kansas-Missouri state line. Activity includes a 1½-inch mill and asphalt overlay. The contractor will begin work at the state line and continue west through the city of Louisburg.

Flaggers and a pilot car will direct one-lane traffic through the work zone on the two-lane section of K-68; expect delays of 15 minutes or less. Traffic will be carried through construction with intermittent lane closures inside the Louisburg city limits. 

Weather permitting, the project should be finished by mid-October.

Obituary - Francis “Duane” Ketron

Duane Ketron, age 67, passed away on August 16, 2022 at Medicalodge of Fort Scott after suffering from a long illness. He was born February 19, 1955 in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Arthur Hursh Ketron and Mary Louise Clark Ketron. 

Duane graduated from Fort Scott High School and worked at Peerless in Fort Scott for many years. He still owned his first car, a 1959 Ford Fairlane 2-door sedan named “Old Betsy”, that he dreamed of restoring. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a winning smile with those he encountered. In addition, he was an avid Royals fan and loved dogs and cats.

Survivors include two sisters – Kathee Light of Hoxie, AR and Carolyn Strauch of Neosho, MO; four nieces – Kamela Light of Hoxie, AR; Shawnta (spouse Randal) Whited of Walnut Ridge, AR; Caroline Green (spouse Steve) of Topeka, KS; and Julia (spouse Gabriel) Carroll of Springfield, MO; eight great-nieces/nephews – Harley Light, Chance Phillips, Memory Light, Hannah (spouse Brandon) Dawson, Weston Whited, Ethan Whited, Zackary Green, and Bradley Green; one great-great-niece – Londyn Light. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Hursh and Mary Louise Ketron, his younger brother, David Arthur Ketron, brother-in-law Ronnie “Frog” Light, and niece Kristy Light.

Visitation with the family and friends will be Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 10:30 am in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 am with interment at Memory Gardens after the Memorial Service. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, love, and acts of caring for our brother and uncle Duane. We also want to thank the Cheney Witt staff for all their assistance and caring service. Please join us in celebrating and remembering his life.

Lost African Spurred Tortoise in Cass County

Lost African Spurred Tortoise in Cass County ! 

Today August 18th Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl Kelly Hoover located a large Tortoise on State Route J between Raymore & Peculiar in Cass County. It appears to be a lost “pet” & we need your help locating the owner. 

Meanwhile, the Belton Animal Clinic & Exotic Care Center is caring for Mr. Turtle until the owner is found.

Obituary - Terry Lee Thornton

Terry Lee Thornton, age 65, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 13, 2022 in the comfort of his home.

Terry was born July 13, 1957 in Portsmouth, Virginia, the son of Thomas Frank Thornton Sr and Edith Mae Landy-Boone Thornton. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1975 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring as an E-6 Tech Sergeant. He served duty assignments across the world including: Alaska, Arizona, Alabama, California, England, Oman and his final assignment at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento, CA. Following his military retirement, he later built a career working for the State of California as a Computer Programmer for the Department of Health Services, where he retired in 2016.

Terry was a deeply devoted family man who cherished spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a loyal and enthusiastic Washington Redskins fan, those who know him understand the affinity he had for the team. He also enjoyed fishing, puzzles, board games, listening to music, dancing, playing dominoes, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and beloved cats, Oliver, Kitty, Lola and Kayla. He was passionate about coaching and mentoring children and young adults. He was a pillar of his community in Yuba City, CA and Raymore, MO where he was heavily involved in the Parks and Recreation department in volunteer and supervisory roles. He coached hundreds of young children over the years including his own daughters. He made an impact each day by helping students and young adults to understand responsibility and empowered them to make their own decisions. He was fiercely loving, incredibly stylish, competitive and had a huge, caring heart. To know Terry, was to know the joyous and loving man that he was, there was never a stranger he couldn’t convert to a friend. He had an infectious laugh and sought to maintain connections with those he loved near and far.

On September 26, 2011, he married his loving wife, Anna Baumann, in Yuba City, California, together they blended their families and shared love for their six children and 10 grandchildren. Shortly following his retirement from the State of California, he and Anna moved to Raymore, MO to enjoy their retirement together. They shared a deep love for one another and enjoyed volunteering together at the Heart and Hand thrift store in Raymore, MO.

Terry is survived by his wife, Anna Thornton; his children Terry Gambrell of Greenville, South Carolina, Nicole R Roberson of Washington DC, Angelica Vega-Foley (Brendon) of Phoenix, Arizona and Alaina Miller (Nick) of Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin; his step-daughters Amanda Middlemas (RJ) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Shannon Jorgensen (Tyler) of Castlerock, Colorado; his siblings, Pastor Wilbert Nicholson (Brenda), of Greenville, NC, Pastor Thomasine Wortham (Hubert) of Flushing, Michigan, Toni Wright (Linwood) of Norfolk, Virginia, and Jenelda Scott (Marcus) of Portsmouth, Virginia; his cousin Willia Allen (Floyd) of King George, Virginia, 10 grandchildren, and his many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and the friends who became his family.

He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas Frank Thornton (Yvonne, deceased) and his parents, Thomas Frank Thornton and Edith Mae Landy-Boone.

A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM, with a service to follow at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 19, 2022 at Fellowship Church in Raymore, MO.

A reception will be held at Fellowship Church immediately following the services.

Terry will be laid down in his final resting place at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA, with military honors on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Raymore Parks & Recreation Department or Yuba City Parks & Recreation Department.
