Multiple vehicle crash in Belton

The Belton Missouri Police Department is currently working a multi-vehicle crash on 58 Highway between Peculiar Drive and Powell Pkwy. 

Missouri 58 Highway is currently closed in both directions as officers begin their investigation. 

Please find alternative routes and avoid the area. We will provide an update on the situation when possible.

I would like to introduce all of you to Adrian School Resource Officer Briggs. Officer Briggs lives just outside of Adrian and will be in the school protecting our children. 

I have no doubt he is the man for this job. When you see Officer Briggs be sure and thank him.

Obituary - Samuel Roy Evans


Samuel Roy Evans, age 71, lifelong resident of Devon, KS, died Saturday, August 20, 2022, at his home. He was born March 12, 1951, in Ft. Scott, KS, the son of Samuel and Nina Henning Evans. He graduated from Uniontown High School in 1969. Sam married Linda Shelton on April 16, 1971, at the Devon United Methodist Church. 

He worked for over 20 years for Bourbon County as a heavy equipment operator until retiring in 2016. Sam enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and riding horses in his younger days. He always had a dog by his side. He was passionate about his grandchildren and was so proud of each of them. Sam could be described as a unique individual. He was a member of the Devon Masonic Lodge #92 for over 25 years.

Survivors include his wife Linda, of the home; 2 daughters, Kelly Eastwood and husband Ken, Nevada, MO, and Katie Casper and husband Bo, Devon, KS; 2 sisters, Shirley Jefferis and husband Jim, Moran, KS, and Mary Ellen Beck, Mt. Vernon, MO; a brother, Gene Evans, Ft. Scott; 6 grandchildren, Marine Lance Corporal Corbin Eastwood, Caleb Eastwood, Mesa Casper, Kodi Jo Casper, Bryn Casper, and Samuel Cole Casper; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Sam Evans; his mother, Nina Evans McCullough, and 2 brothers in law, Joe Beck, and Dennis Shelton.

Pastor Danny Brown will conduct graveside services at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 25th, in the Centerville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 AM Thursday prior to leaving for the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner’s Transportation Fund and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main St., Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneywitt.com.

Obituary - Retired Fire Chief, Donald Lee Cox

Retired Fire Chief, Donald Lee Cox, 87, Nevada, MO passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Medicalodges in Nevada. Don was born at home on August 8, 1935 in Nevada to Samuel M. and Helen G. (Rabon) Cox, weighing in at 12lbs. He married Edith M. Moon on August 25, 1956 and to this union one son, Bruce Michael Cox, was born on December 25, 1957.

Don was raised in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School. He lived his whole life in Nevada, MO. For 32 years he worked for the City of Nevada as a fireman. He worked his way up through the ranks obtaining the positions of Assistant Chief and Fire Chief, serving a total of 17 years in these two positions. In 1986 he retired due to his health. Don attended the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada. He was a lifetime member of the Nevada Elks Lodge #564.

In addition to his wife Edith of 66 years, he is survived by his son, Bruce Cox of Salina, KS; a grandson, Michael Cox, Greensburg, KS; several nieces, and cousins, including his favorite, Norma Lee Quarles, whom he named and spoiled. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, and sister, Carol Jean Heckadon.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2022 at Moore Cemetery in Nevada with Rev. Laura Agee officiating. Friends may call now and until 9:00 a.m. on Friday at Ferry Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested in his memory to the Nevada Elks Lodge, or the Animal Shelter c/o Ferry Funeral Home.
