Osceola woman seriously injured in St. Clair County Crash

On August 27th around 11:45 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in St. Clair County along with St. Clair County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle accident on Missouri 82 Highway just south of Osceola.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 1997 Ford F-150 driven by 39 year old Crystal M. Carl of Osceola, Missouri ran off the right side of the roadway, overturned ejecting the driver.

Crystal M. Carl sustained serious injuries and she was transported by ambulance to Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri for treatment.

Obituary - Lynn Marie Varner

Lynn Marie Varner, 52, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at her home El Dorado Springs, MO. Lynn was born June 5, 1970 in Dorchester, MA to Roy and Judith Empy.

Lynn is survived by two children, Justin Varner (Kinlee), and Kayleen Varner, both of El Dorado Springs, MO; seven grandchildren; father, Roy Empey, El Dorado Springs; and her mother, Judith Empy, New Hampshire. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Victor G. Garcia.

Lynn’s greatest joy in life was being a Nanna to her seven grandchildren.

No services are planned.

Obituary - Marilyn Maxine Ward

Marilyn Maxine Ward, age 88, a resident of rural Mulberry, Kansas, passed away early Thursday, August 25, 2022, at her home. 

She was born October 28, 1933, in Jasper County, Missouri, the daughter of James Endicott and Iris Wilson Endicott. 

Marilyn first married Harvey Harrison in 1952. They later divorced and she married John C. Ward in 1975. Marilyn was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her five children. She enjoyed sewing and doing puzzles.

Survivors include her children, Harvey David Harrison of Fulton, Kansas, Janice Durbin (Jesse) of Hume, Missouri, Wilma Cagle of Mulberry, Kansas, Sandra Elaine Nutter (Walter “Buster”) of Garland, Kansas and Darryl Harrison of Weir, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. 

Also surviving are a sister, Alice Fink of Redfield, Kansas and two brothers, Robert Endicott of Hepler, Kansas and J. W. “Jingles” Endicott of Ft. Scott, Kansas. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, John, on November 8, 2005. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and James Endicott, five sisters, Laverne Harrison, Mary Lee Heathman, Carol Ybarra, Irma Hughes, Lucille Quick and Leona Endicott and a son-in-law, Jack Cagle.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 29th at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends on Monday from 9:30 A.M. until service time at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Avalon Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Obituary - Vesta Loree Limpus

Vesta Loree Limpus, 92, Archie, Missouri, died August 26, 2022, at Medicalodge of Butler in Butler, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at the Adrian Christian Church, Adrian, Missouri. Friends may call from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, MO. Burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Missouri.

Vesta, daughter of Vern and Elnora (Shoop) Dines, was born July 25, 1930, near Johnson City, Missouri, following her twin sister, Velda Marie Dines. The family moved to a farm east of Passaic in March 1943. Vesta graduated from Butler High School in 1948. She served as an officer in the local FHA chapter and as State Historian. She was awarded the DAR Citizenship Award and was chosen as the outstanding student in Home Economics. After graduation, she worked at J.C. Penny in Butler. Kenneth Limpus and Vesta Dines were married on April 13, 1949 in Butler, Missouri. After living near Virginia, Missouri, for two and a half years, they moved to the Limpus family farm west of Archie in December 1951. In August 1969, they moved to a home in Archie.

Vesta worked at home, cooking, cleaning, canning, sewing, child care, and all the other tasks that needed to be done to make a comfortable home for her family. When they opened the D-Li-My Restaurant in November 1968, she began working there to get it started. She was still working there when they sold the restaurant in 1981. Later, she worked at Family Center from 1985 until she retired in 2009.

Vesta and Kenneth joined the Archie Christian Church in 1953 and were active there until they moved their membership to the Adrian Christian Church in 1965. She taught a children’s Sunday School class.

Vesta excelled in cooking, sewing and interior decoration. She used her skills to the benefit of her family, church and community. Friends were impressed with her construction skills when she built a shed for storage, a toybox/desk for the boys and doll furniture for Gayle. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She appreciated club meetings and outings with fellow members of the Modern Priscilla Club.

Vesta is survived by her three children: Larry Limpus and wife, Mary, Amsterdam, Missouri; Daryl Limpus and wife, Billie, Archie, Missouri; and Gayle Venturella and husband, Tony, Lawrence, Kansas; grandchildren: Barry Limpus, Thea Limpus, Sara Mathes, Rachel Limpus, Chelsea Hannon and Caley Jo Venturella; step grandchildren: Becky Anderson and Roseann Abeln; great grandchildren: Logan Limpus, Ali Mathes, Tyler Mathes, Caden Hannon and Caley Mae Hannon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Limpus; her two brothers: Marvin Dines and Gene Dines; her sister, Eileen Casey; her twin sister, Velda Cox; and a grandson, Bradley Niven Limpus.

Nevada woman injured in Barton County Crash

On August 27th around 1:45 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Barton County along with Barton County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle accident on US 160 around 4 miles south of Liberal.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the northbound 2015 Nissan Altima driven by 66 year old Barbara A. Williams of Fort Scott, Kansas struck the eastbound 2019 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 68 year old Debra A. Griggs of Nevada, Missouri in the passenger side causing it to overturn.

Debra A. Griggs sustained moderate injures and she was transported by ambulance to Cox Barton County Hospital for treatment.

Obituary - Erma Lee Woody

Erma Lee Woody, 97, of Lee's Summit, MO, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Redwood of Raymore in Raymore, MO. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at 11:00am at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO, with visitation prior at 10:00 am and a luncheon immediately following the service at the Harrisonville Community Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Shalom Hospice.

Erma was born June 18, 1925 to Eury and Lola (Wilkerson) Shaw in St. Clair County, MO. She attended school in Osceola, MO, and completed her high school education at UCM adult education. She loved her career as a medical assistant and retired from the Louisburg Medical Clinic.

Erma met her husband, James Woody, in 1943 in Osceola, MO. He was on leave from the Navy and it was love at first sight. They were married May 10, 1943. They had two children, Larry and Peggy, and helped to raise their nephew, Jim. Erma loved children and she was a mother figure to all. Erma nurtured her children and grandchildren and taught them many things, her greatest lesson being how to love unconditionally.

Erma loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, fishing and animals. She liked to travel and loved their lake home. Anyone who knew Erma will remember how much she loved candy. Erma was loved by many and will be missed greatly.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Peggy Melton; her nephew, Jim Shaw; a grandson, Corbin Melton; and her siblings. She is survived by her son, Larry Woody; four grandchildren: Jesse Shaw (Sheldon), Kourtney Bruns (Dustin), Lindsey Shaw and Tomi Melton; 9 great-grandchildren: Devin, Dillan, Payton, Michael, Lily, Alaina, Addison, Kinley and Karter.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Home Instead for their excellent in-home aid, to the staff at Redwood of Raymore for their loving care during her stay and to the staff of Shalom Hospice for their care, devotion and friendship.
