Coffey shines as Drexel bobcats defeat the tigers from Lockwood

The Drexel Bobcats defeated the Lockwood Tigers tonight with a final score of 86-57 to stay unbeaten in football action.

Drexel Senior QB Jacob Coffey dominated the tigers on the ground and in the air with 300 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns and passing for 168 yards and 3 touchdowns. 

The Bobcats will travel to play the Appleton City bulldogs on September 9th. Appleton City is coming off a loss to the Archie Whirlwinds 54-16 tonight an will be hungry to get a win.

Man Wanted in Homicide Investigation in Southern Missouri

Camdenton, MO, 09-01-22 - Late Tuesday night, 08-30-22, Camden County Communications Officers received a 911 call from a woman claiming her boyfriend had been hit by a car in their driveway on Georgene Road, north of Camdenton.

Upon arrival, Camden County sheriff's deputies discovered 43 year old Michael S Varney deceased on the front porch of his house. During their investigation deputies and detectives determined Varney was killed as a result of being struck with a vehicle. 

The investigation also revealed Varney had been in an argument earlier in the day with a roommate. Eyewitness accounts describe the argument as volatile. Witnesses on scene describe a vehicle striking Varney on the front porch of the residence and then fleeing the scene.

The Camden County Sheriff's Office is looking for the suspect in this case identified as Jordan Fitzgerald Jones, 32, of Camdenton. Jones is known to frequent Camdenton, Macks Creek, and Lebanon and has ties throughout the lake area. 

Jones could be driving a late 1990s green or teal extended cab Chevrolet pickup truck. The truck may have recent front end damage from the incident on Georgene Road.

Jones has an active warrant for absconding issued by the Department of Probation and Parole.

Anyone with information concerning Jones whereabouts should contact the Camden County Detective Bureau at 573-346-2243.

A reminder that these charges are merely allegations of wrongdoing. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Update: Belton standoff ends when suspect shoots himself

The standoff in the 500 block of Hargis Lane has ended. Just after 6:00 PM, the suspect shot himself. 

The suspect has been transported to a local hospital. The suspect’s condition is unknown at this time.

Personnel are collapsing the perimeter and residents will be able to return to the area shortly.

Turner sentenced in Bates County Court

Judge Brandon Baker sentenced 23 year old Kaley Jo Helen Turner to 20 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections August 30, for the murder of Wanda Czechan. Czechan, 57 and her daughter Kasey Weeks were stabbed by Turner at their home in Amoret, Missouri in February of 2020.

Both women were seriously injured with Wanda Czechan dying from her injuries in March of 2020. Kasey Weeks 33, survived the attack. Turner has been in the Bates County Jail since the incident occurred.

Judge Brandon Baker and family members listened as Kasey Weeks delivered her Victim Impact statement to the Court. An emotional statement from Joe Czechan was also read during the sentencing hearing.

Turner was sentenced to 20 years in prison on 3 counts, a Class A Felony of murder in the second degree, a Class A Felony of 1st degree assault, and armed criminal action.

After the sentencing, Kaley Jo Helen Turner was then remanded to the custody of the Bates County Sheriff for transport to the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Turner was represented by Public Defender Jason Speer and Bates County Prosecuting Attorney Hugh C. Jenkins represented the State.

Bates County Coroner’s Office Activity Report for the month of August, 2022

On 8/8/2022 at just before 4:30 PM we responded to the Cass Regional Medical Center for a death following an incident Bates County. Death was accidental in nature.

On 8/10/2022 we were referred a death by Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office after a person had died at a KC Hospital following transfer from Bates County. The case is not complete at this time.

On 8/13/2022 Just before 10am we responded to a residence in NW Bates County on report of person found deceased by neighbors. Death was natural in manner.

On 8/15/2022 just after 8pm we responded to a residence in Butler on report of person found deceased at the residence by family. The case is incomplete at this time but natural causes are likely.

On 8/15/2022 just before midnight we responded to a residence in NW Bates County on report of person deceased at the residence. Death was due to natural causes.

On 8/21/2022 just after 2:30am we responded to a residence in Rich Hill on report of deceased person outside the residence. Investigation is not yet final but preliminary indication is a suicidal event.

On 8/23/2022 just before 6:30pm we responded to a residence in NE Bates County on report of person found deceased by family. Investigation determines natural causes.

For the month of August the office reviewed 8 cases of death in Bates County under hospice or care facility.

Semi truck rollover accident this morning in Bates County

On September 1st around 9:50 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a semi truck rollover accident on Route A just west of CR SW 14267 in rural Bates County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2000 Kenworth driven by 56 year old David A. Yarick of Rich Hill, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

A passenger in the semi truck 80 year old Albert F. Yarick of Rich Hill sustained minor injuries in this accident and he refused medical treatment.
