Obituary - Joyce Sue Thompson

Joyce Sue Thompson, age 78, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 9, 2023 at Cullen Funeral Home, 612 W. Foxwood Dr. Raymore, Missouri 64083. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Joyce will then be laid to rest next to her husband at Rockville Cemetery.

Joyce was born at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri on June 2, 1944 to Ernest Franklin Thompson and Doris Josephine (Bailey) Thompson. Growing up, Joyce attended elementary school in Garden City, Missouri. She enjoyed and participated in a group called Rainbow Girls in her hometown of Holden, Missouri where she also attended high school. Meant for city living, Joyce soon relocated to Kansas City. 

In the summer of 1968, Joyce was joined in marriage with her late husband Arthur Thompson Jr. on June 14th in Vinita, Oklahoma. Their union was blessed with three children. Joyce created for herself a career as an Exam Clerk for the Internal Revenue Service until her retirement in 2006. 

In life, Joyce, also referred to as “Aunt Suess” by her sister Judy’s family, was a member of the Pioneer Club where she would sew heart pillows and knit lap blankets and quilts for those living in nursing homes and on hospice care. Joyce also, very much enjoyed gardening as she had a love for all kinds of flowers, especially roses.

Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband of almost fifty years, Arthur “Junior” Thompson Jr.; parents, Ernest and Doris Thompson; sister, Jo Ellen Jones; and mother in law, Lytle Thompson.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Donna Thompson, Debbie Miller, and Derrick Thompson; sister, Judy Wood (Denver); three grandchildren, Bailey Mahany, Cody Miller, and Kaelyn Thompson; and two great grandchildren, Delilah and Eli Mahany.

Obituary - Theodore R. "Ted" Stanton

Theodore R. “Ted” Stanton, age 97, resident of Fort Scott, KS, died Monday, January 2, 2023, at Medicalodge of Fort Scott. Ted was born on July 11, 1925, in Fort Scott, the son of Theodore and Velda (Hall) Stanton. 

He served in the U. S. Navy for 4 years as a gunner’s mate 2nd class during WWII. Ted married Shirley Ray Heiser on May 2, 1944, in Fort Scott. Together they raised 2 children, Stephen, and Shirlene. She preceded him in death on September 11, 2007. 

Ted worked for the Kansas Gas & Electric Company initially as part of the line crew and later as an office clerk, retiring after 37 years. Ted was volunteered at the Fort Scott National Historic Site and served on the canon crew. He also enjoyed classic cars and kept them in pristine condition. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Survivors include his 2 children, Stephen R. Stanton, and Shirlene Jackson, both of Fort Scott; and 8 grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

The was cremation per Ted’s request. Graveside services at U. S. National Cemetery will be announced later by the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Obituary - Robert A. Steele

Robert A. Steele, 84, Joplin, MO, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO. Robert “Bob” was born January 13, 1938, in Nevada, MO to Luther L. and Elia (Penney) Steele. Bob was united in marriage to MaryAnn Redmile and to this union three children were born: Jennifer, Douglas, and David.

Bob was raised in Nevada and attended Nevada High School. He graduated High School in Dupo, IL in 1956. He attended the University of Delaware and graduated from the Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia, PA in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He was employed by Sentry Insurance Company most of his career and also worked for I.M.I. of Old Saybrook, CT. Following his relocating back to Nevada, Bob worked at the YMCA where he met Jane (True) Ratts, and they were married October 16, 2004. In August of 2010 they moved from Nevada to Joplin, MO where they have continued to reside.

Bob loved making people laugh, and he never met a stranger. He also loved to travel and had been to all 50 states. Bob was a “model railroader” and had a special bond with his step-grandson, Tyler Allison with whom he shared his model trains. Bob’s love of trains was influenced by his father who was a machinist on railroad steam engines.

Robert is survived by his wife, Jane, of the home; his step-daughter, Trudy Holtkamp, Springfield, MO; three-step grandchildren, Matthew, Kaylee, and Tyler; two step-greatgrandchildren, Paislee, and Camdon, from the Joplin area; two sons, Douglas Steele (Molly), Boulder, CO, and David Steele (Meenakshi), Falls Church, VA; and 4 grandchildren, Maddie, Jessica, Michael, and Cordelia: a brother, Loren Steele, Mound City, KS; and a sister, Nova Staggs, Sherwood, AR. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jennifer Steele; a step-daughter, Brenda (Hedges)(Reynolds) Allison; and a brother, Jack Steele.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Father Jim Lile officiating.

Obituary - Linda Sue Scammell

Linda Sue Scammell, Richards, MO passed from this life into heaven on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the age of 77. She was born April 8, 1945, in Indianapolis, IN to Rex and Jean (Douglas) Charles. On February 14, 1965, she was united in marriage to Charles Scammell at First Christian Church in Nevada, and together they raised two children.

Linda graduated from Nevada High School in 1963 and attended Fort Scott Community College. Early in her adult life, Linda worked as a lab technician for many years. In past years she enjoyed playing the piano and painting. When her daughter was in elementary school, Linda served as Brownies and Girl Scout Leaders, which enabled her to touch many young lives. From early on until she took her last breath on earth, she loved people and would do anything possible for those in need. She was such a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother (Mema), and friend. The love of Jesus lived in her heart and definitely poured out onto others.

Linda leaves behind her husband, Chuck of 57 years, of the home in Richards; one son, Patrick Scammell and his spouse Randy, of Kansas City, MO; one daughter, Angela Johnson and her husband Kyle, of Plano, TX; one granddaughter, Alicia Pickens and her husband Christopher of Oakwood, TX; great-grandchildren, Jace, Jocelyn, Lawson, Memphis, and Lincoln; one brother, Joe Charles and his wife, Georgia, of Richards, MO; one sister, Elizabeth Perrin, of Richards, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Tom Charles, and a brother-in-law, Paul Perrin.

A Celebration of Life will take place on her birthday, April 8, 2023. Details to follow.

Near normal temperatures for early January

A bit cooler up across northern Missouri this afternoon where significant cloud cover still remains, and areas of light snow and/or flurries have been ongoing all day. 

Further south, the skies have cleared with near normal temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Similar conditions are expected tomorrow with a slight warm-up and clearing skies for all on Friday.

Candace “Candi” Louise Hughes, age 61 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, January 1, 2023 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born August 25, 1961 in Richmond, Missouri.

Candi grew up in Glenaire and Liberty, Missouri. In her adult years, she spent her time living between Butler, Missouri and Black Foot, Idaho. Candi was a Certified Nursing Assistant and worked at Adrian Manor in Adrian, Missouri and Willow Lane Nursing Home in Butler, Missouri. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Butler.

Candi was known to be kind-hearted, fun, giving and a loving mother who put everyone before herself. She was an avid Chiefs fan and did her best to spread the Chiefs Kingdom into Black Foot. Candi loved spending time, fishing and playing games with her grandchildren and family. She enjoyed the mountains at Black Foot.

Candi is survived by one son, Alonso Chairez and wife Sam of Butler, Missouri; three grandchildren, Abigail, Ayden and Easton Chairez; her father and mother, Charlie and Loretta Hughes of Liberty, Missouri; seven siblings, Dianna Brandon of Kansas City, Kansas, Lori Register and Cindy O’Neil both of Black Foot, Idaho, Marvin Misner of Kansas City, Missouri, Cathy Carver of Butler, Missouri, Sarah Hughes of Seattle, Washington, and Aaron Hughes of Tokyo, Japan; a niece who was like a daughter, Ashley Luker and husband T.J. and their family of Black Foot, Idaho; and many other nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her biological mother, Mary Appleberry; and a sister, Lisa Dillion.
