Obituary - Loretta Jane Cherry

Loretta Jane Cherry, 86 of Nevada passed away at the Strafford Care Center in Strafford , MO on Saturday, January 7, 2023. She was born on April 24, 1936 in Nevada and was raised by Loren and Bessie (True) Wade. 

Loretta was raised in the Walker area and attended Walker High School where she excelled in Basketball. She was valedictorian and graduated with the class of 1954.

Loretta was married to Jack Cherry and from this union her two sons, Doug and David were born. Loretta worked for Farm and Home Savings for a time, as an assistant for Dr. Ben Mendenhall for several years, Cotty College in Nevada, and retired from the Nevada State Hospital.

Survivors include her two sons, Doug Cherry and his wife Carla of Kansas City, MO and David Cherry and his wife Kori of Nevada, seven grandchildren, Dillon Cherry, Shane Cherry, Jacob Cherry, Austen Cherry, Walker Cherry, Alison Bower, and Emalie Bower, eight grandchildren, Atticus Cherry, Amelia Cherry, Nathaniel Cherry, Nicholas Watson, Cronin Cherry, Legend Cherry, Kaden Willis, and Dash Cherry, one sister, Carol Spillars of Jefferson City, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters, and her companion of many years, Jack Dade.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Roger Beach officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Obituary - Joyce Elaine Hueston

Joyce Elaine Hueston, age 84, Mapleton, Kansas went to her heavenly home, Saturday, January 7, 2023. Joyce was born June 8, 1938 in Fort Scott, Kansas the daughter of Walter Albert and Laura Faye(Davis) Sutterby. 

She graduated from Blue Mound High School in the Class of 1956. Joyce married Raymond Hueston on March 29, 1964 in the Mapleton United Methodist Church. 

She worked for Bourbon County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Department for thirty-five years before retiring. Joyce was very active within the Mapleton community throughout her entire life. After retiring, Joyce took great pride in delivering food and water to firemen while they were working a fire, no matter the time of day.

She was also a very dedicated member of the Mapleton United Methodist Church. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Raymond in 2014, a granddaughter, Stephanie Leann Hueston, a grandson, Justin Hueston, great grandson, T.J. Burton, her parents, sister, Peggy McNally and a brother, Marlyn Sutterby.

Joyce is survived by a son, Mike Hueston and wife Lori, a daughter, Jolene Crystal and husband Marty, former daughter in law, Ginger Hueston, siblings, Jack Sutterby and wife Bonnie, and Sharon Lund, grandchildren, Katie Towne and husband Mike and their children Colby and Paityn Hueston, Zak Hueston and Hunter Casey and daughter Brylynn Hueston, Raylene Burton and husband Thomas and their children, Olivia and Watson Burton, Kaylyn Simpson and husband Kalen, their child, Monroe Simpson, Callie Crystal and Devon LeFever, and Emma Stewart. Joyce was also loved by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Joyce was known for being a caretaker of all, her bright smile and laugh.

Funeral service will be 2 pm Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at the Mapleton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Mapleton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday, January 10, at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. There is a water leak in the Northwest side of town, affected area is Holly St to Missouri from 4th St to 6th St.

The water will be off for a undetermined amount time. Public works is working diligently to get the leak fixed.

Obituary - Maxine Farr

Maxine Farr, 92, Harrisonville, MO, passed away peacefully, with her family at her side on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville with visitation from 10:00-11:00. Burial will be in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice.

Maxine was born September 27, 1930 in West Line, MO, a daughter of Robert Claude and Gladys Lucille (Smith) Richardson. Her years growing up in West Line were some of her fondest memories. She loved to tell stories about the people and events of those years. She was united in marriage to Bob Farr on November 28, 1948 at the First Christian Church in Harrisonville, where they remained members the rest of their lives. Maxine had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing in the choir, as well as, duets and other special music. Throughout their 72 years of marriage, they made their home in Harrisonville and Freeman, with strong ties to both communities. They continued to be involved with friends from their youth, The Gang.

Maxine was a member of the Domestic Dames women’s club where she enjoyed monthly gatherings and other activities with her friends. A couples canasta club formed from this group and also met once a month. Over 50 years of fun and friendship were shared with these groups. There was nothing, however, that brought Maxine more joy than her family, and once she loved you, you were family. Her happiest moments were sitting down at her table to serve a meal, she had prepared, to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; and a sister, Leah Lacy. She is survived by her children: Debbee Long, Peculiar, MO; Robert (Jacqueline) Farr, Warsaw, MO; and Amy (Craig) Newman, North Richland Hills, TX; five grandchildren: Brooke, Christopher, Tessa, Lindsey, Michael; 11 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Obituary - Wayne A. Smith

Wayne A. Smith, 83, of Harrisonville, MO, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Jefferson Healthcare in Lee’s Summit, MO. A memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville.

Wayne was born April 5, 1939 in Harrisonville, MO, a son of Albert Earl and Nellie Mabel (Craig) Smith. He married Cynthia Kay Stephens on February 14, 1970 in Harrisonville, MO. Wayne had worked as an automotive and tractor mechanic his entire life. He was an avid stock car racer for 31 years.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Cynthia, on August 17, 2014; one son, Chad Smith; one brother, Billy Smith; and two sisters, Ruby Van Sandt and Mary Jane Knox. He is survived by six sons: Terry Smith, Belton, MO; Gene Smith, Creighton, MO; Shawn Smith, Raymore, MO; Don Smith, Raymond Gilbert, and Jay Smith, all of Archie, MO; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.

Obituary - Deborah Claralea Anders

Deborah "Debbie" Claralea Anders, 68, of Peculiar, MO, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2023 at her home in Peculiar. Graveside services will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Peculiar Cemetery in Peculiar, MO. 

A funeral reception will be held immediately following at The Beck Event Space in Harrisonville, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Wayside Waifs.

Debbie was born February 14, 1954 to Doyle and Delores (Nave) Albright in Neosho, MO. She attended school in Belton and later Grandview, MO, graduating with the class of 1972. There she met her first husband, Steven Quarles, and they made their home in Peculiar, MO. She worked for Peculiar Elementary in the cafeteria when her kids were young so she could be off when the kids were out of school. She then married James Anders in 1983, and moved to Belton for a short time.

The bulk of her work life consisted of planting, growing, and selling plants and trees. She spent 12 years with Rosehill Gardens, then took a job with Suburban Lawn & Garden where her coworkers became like family. Debbie had the greenest thumb, known for her beautiful landscape and knowledge of potting up plants. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021 and fought through several chemo treatments with her normal grit and fierce independence.

She is preceded in death by her parents and infant sibling, Darlene. She is survived by her four children: Joslyn Quarles (Darold Goudeau) Raytown, MO; Michael Quarles (Andrea Steele) Belton, MO; Shannon Thomas (James) Kansas City, MO; and Journey Anders of Kansas City, MO. She also leaves behind three grandchildren with the nicknames she gave them, Destiny "Sweet Pea" Quarles (22), Marcellus "Little Mahomes" Goudeau (14), and Juniper "Sweet Baby J" Thomas (5); four younger siblings: Darcy, Denise, Darla, and David; countless nieces and nephews; a host of cousins; and her Pomeranian, Dixie.
