FEBRUARY 7, 2023:

On the first Tuesday of each month Countywide Disposal will hold an Amnesty Day that allows ONE bulk item to be picked up per household at no additional charge.

Bulk items are defined as: excess household trash, mattresses, box springs, bicycles, large toys, car seats, grills (no propane tanks or hot ashes), furniture fixtures (no fluorescent lights), sofas, chairs, tables, etc. 

If you have more than one bulk item or do not want to wait until Amnesty Day, please call the Countywide office for a quote to get it picked up.

Obituary - Joe Goddard

Funeral services for Joe Goddard of Independence, Missouri will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2023 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri.

Joe Edward Goddard, age 54 of Independence, Missouri died Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at his home in Independence. He was born December 12, 1968 to Barney Lee and Carolyn Lea Spears Goddard in Kansas City, Missouri.

Joe is survived by a son, Brandon Harris of Independence, Missouri; two daughters, Tiffany Harris of Oak Grove, Missouri and Rachael Harris of Independence, Missouri; two sisters, Robin Burke of Kansas City, Missouri and Tracy Goddard of Marble Hill, Missouri; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Shania and Kylie. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Laura McKinney.

Obituary - Nelson Glee Myers

Funeral services for Nelson Glee Myers of Butler, Missouri will be 10 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler. No visitation. Burial with Military Honors in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.

Nelson Glee Myers, age 90 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, January 30, 2023 at Medicalodge of Butler. He was born September 2, 1932 to Charles and Goldie Myers in Ohio, Missouri.

Nelson is survived by his wife, Lois Myers of Butler, Missouri; two daughters, Deborah Davis of Adrian, Missouri and Kathy Fischer and husband Alan of Grain Valley, Missouri; one son, Chuck Myers and wife Michelle of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; one sister, Charlene Benbow and husband JD of Appleton City, Missouri; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. 

Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ruby Myers; one nephew, John Benbow; and one son-in-law, Jerry Davis.

Obituary - Mary Catherine Maupin

Mary Catherine Maupin of Leavenworth, Kansas was born June 15, 1927 in Kansas City, Kansas the daughter of Virgil Vaughn and Catherine Julia (Strickler) File. 

She departed this life of Friday, January 27, 2023 at Merriam Gardens Health and Rehab, Shawnee, Kansas surrounded with love and family at the age of 95 years, 7 months and 12 days.

On October 3, 1964 Mary was united in marriage to Vernon Eugene Maupin in Kansas City, Kansas.

Mary was employed as a machine operator for Western Envelope, Kansas City, Missouri until her retirement in 1962. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, canning, sewing and cooking. Mary had lived in Odessa and Independence before moving to Leavenworth, Kansas.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon on September 6, 1997; her two sons, Gary and Ronald Helton and a grand-daughter, Catherine Sue Walker.

Mary is survived by a son, Charles A. Helton, Leavenworth, Kansas; her daughter, Linda Billings, Richmond, Missouri; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
A Graveside Service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at Grant Cemetery, Creighton, Missouri.

Public notice from the Bates County Coroners Office

Sadly there are a couple of pending matters at the Coroner's office which cause the need for public notice.

Laure Perkins (DOB 3/11/1965) died 1/8/2023 in Bates County. She does have surviving family members who began to take responsibility by seeking arrangements with a funeral home, but unfortunately did not continue to complete the arrangements. If you are a family member or close friend to Ms. Perkins and might be interested to take responsibility, contact the Coroner.

Nancy Shepherd (DOB 5/30/1953) died 1/25/2023 in Bates County. Ms. Shepherd is believed to not have surviving family and does have a friend willing to take responsibility, provided no there are indeed no surviving family members with superior rights as next-of-kin. If you are family to Ms. Shepherd or know of any, you are welcome to contact the Coroner.

Obituary - Richard Ralph Hoedl, Jr.

Richard Ralph Hoedl, Jr. age 72, of Belton, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023.

Services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2023 at St. Sabina, 700 Trevis Ave., Belton, Missouri 64012. 

Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am. Richard will then be laid to rest next to his mother at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery.

Richard was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 4, 1950 to Richard Ralph Hoedl, Sr. and Beverly Ann (Stock) Hoedl. Richard graduated from high school and primarily worked in food service. A man of Catholic faith, Richard was a member of St. Sabina Catholic Perish in Belton, attending for many years. In life, Richard cherished his time with family, playing games including on his Wii, bowling, and of course watching the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Sr. and Beverly Hoedl.

He is survived by his four siblings, Julie Lasher (Ted) of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Susan Albaugh of Lexington, Missouri, Ann Monnig (Randy) of Belton, Missouri, and Joseph Hoedl of Crane, Missouri; four niece and nephews, Beverly Reichert, Scott Lasher, Thomas Monnig, and Timothy Monnig (Caroline); and great nieces and nephew, Gillian Soloy, Brooklyn Soloy, and Dani Lyn Loyall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Sabina Perish, 700 Trevis Ave., Belton, Missouri.

Nevada woman arrested in Vernon County

On January 30th around 6:24 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Vernon County arrested 40 year old Melinda S. Leon of Nevada, Missouri.

She was arrested for the following charges:
1.) Fail to yield
2.) Fail to drive on he right half of the roadway
3.) Careless and Imprudent Driving

Melinda S. Leon was booked into the Vernon County Jail in Nevada and she is currently listed as bondable.
