Recreational Marijuana Sale Tax set to be on April 4th ballot for the city of Butler

 On April 4, 2023 you will be asked by the City of Butler, MO to impose a 3% city sales tax on the sale of adult use marijuana. This is authorized by Article XIV, Section 2.6(5) of the Missouri Constitution. In order for this to be approved, a simple majority of voters is required. 

Should the city impose the 3% local sales tax, the sales tax will be collected by the Department of Revenue like other sales taxes imposed by the city.

The Official ballot language:
Proposition A
Shall the City of Butler, Missouri impose a city sales tax of Three Percent (3%) on the sales of adult use marijuana sold at retail?
• YES
• NO

If you are in favor of the question, place an “X” in the box opposite “YES”. If you are opposed to the question, place an “X” in the box opposite “NO”.

Anyone missing this backpack in Belton

This pink and green backpack was recovered off of N. Scott in our city last night. Our investigations unit would like to return it to the rightful owner. There was also a small ceramic dog located inside the backpack.

Obituary - Michael Douglas Louthain

Michael Douglas Louthain, 73, of Raymore, MO passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Belton Regional Medical Center in Belton, MO. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. Burial in Oakland Cemetery, Harrisonville, MO.

Michael was born November 25, 1949 to Lawrence and Vivian (Thompson) Louthain in Kansas City, MO. He attended Belton High School in Belton, MO. Michael loved coffee and it was rare to see him without a cup somewhere, and he enjoyed music of all kinds, especially being able to dance with a good upbeat song. He will be most remembered though for his love of people, he never met a stranger and would say Hi to everyone passing by him.

Michael is preceded in death by parents. He is survived by his sister, Linda (Tom) Looney; his brother, David Louthain; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces.

Death Investigation In Clinton

Clinton Police Officers were dispatched to a private residence in the 300 Block of East Jefferson St on Monday, 2/28/2023.

A domestic assault had been reported and upon Officer's arrival, a female victim was contacted who indicated that the suspect had exited the residence just before hearing a gunshot from the vicinity of the back yard of the residence. 

Officers then located the body of a 29 year old male with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

While this incident remains under investigation, it has been determined that there is no threat of danger to the community at large.

The deceased's identity is not being released for the time being to provide opportunity for proper family notifications.

Obituary - Judith A. Matson

Judith A. Matson, a former resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas and more recently of Pittsburg, Kansas, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg. Judy married Roger G. Matson on January 20, 1962; he preceded her in death in 2018.

Survivors include a son, Quinton R. Matson of Kansas City, Missouri; two daughters, Quita Coffman (Donald) of Ft. Scott, Kansas and Dana Noe of Peculiar, Missouri and six grandchildren, Amber Sheehy (Joe), Tylar Montgomery (Justin) and Erin Coffman, all of Ft. Scott, Devon Hudspeth (Taylor) of Lenexa, Kansas, Austin Noe of Cleveland, Missouri and Arie Noe of Webb City, Missouri; and six great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Sheehy, Madison Sheehy, Joseph G. Sheehy and Madelynne Montgomery all of Ft. Scott, Jackson Montgomery of Nevada, Missouri and Easton Hudspeth of Lenexa, Kansas. Also surviving is an aunt, Kathryn Bennett of Girard, Kansas.

Mrs. Matson donated her body to science for the study of SCA6 and other medical research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Following completion of their studies, Judy will be laid to rest with her husband, at the U. S. National Cemetery #1 in Ft. Scott, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Hospital, the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Oltjen Orthodontics or Operation Smile and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted to the online guestbook at cheneyiwtt.com.

Obituary - Lyle Dean Gladfelter

Lyle Dean Gladfelter, age 85, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023 at his home in Clinton, Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March3, 2023 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel with visitation from 12:00-1:00 PM prior to the service. 

Burial will be at 4:00 PM in the Maple Park Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church and can be left in care of the funeral home. Fond memories and condolences can be left at www.vansant-millsfuneralhome.com.

Lyle Dean Gladfelter was born on January 28, 1938 in Benton County, Missouri to Paul and Beulah (Swearinger) Gladfelter. Lyle graduated from Windsor High School and attended U.C.M in Warrensburg where he received his B.S. and M.A. in history. Lyle taught in Missouri for 30 years and worked in Market Research in Springfield, Missouri for 17 years.

Lyle was a member of the Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Green Peace, the Henry County Democratic Club, AARP, ACLU, a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Clinton Christian Church.

Lyle is survived by his two children Sondra Gladfelter of Springfield, Missouri, Mark (Ruana) Gladfelter of Clinton, Missouri, 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many other family and friends.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton, Missouri.
