State Farm Student Athlete of the week Miami Senior Nick Dusenberry

We are excited to announce this week’s State Farm Student Athlete of the week, senior Nick Dusenberry from Miami. Nick plays basketball for the Miami Eagles. He was nominated by his head coach Devyn Hair. Nick had a very good senior season. He reached the milestone of getting his 1000th point and was a key attribute for the Miami Eagles. We asked Nick what he liked about being a part of a team sport.

He stated, “it's like a family. I love getting to win and celebrate with them. There are so many fun times between the team dinners and other things we do throughout the season.” We asked him to state what it takes to be an elite athlete. He replied with, "a lot has to do with their personality.

They have to be likable. However, they have to have a good work ethic. You need to be able to put work in outside of practice and when nobody is watching." Finally, we asked Nick how does being an athlete make you a better person. He said, "it builds hard work, discipline, and time management. You gain a lot of great skills." After high school Nick plans to attend welding school in Nevada. We want to congratulate Nick and his team on a great season!

Ballard R-2 School District Student of the Month for February

The Ballard R-2 School District is pleased to be working in conjunction with the Adrian Optimist Club to honor a Student of the Month for the 2022-23 school year.

Student of the Month is selected by the staff of the Ballard R-2 School District using the following criteria: attendance, attitude towards others and school, behavior, leadership, and improvement in or maintenance of good grades. This month's special theme included qualities of kindness and dependability.

The Student of the Month for February is Senior, Sydney Claiborne, the daughter of Rusty and Sandra Claiborne. Sydney currently participates in National Honor Society, Pep Club, serving as Class Secretary, girl’s volleyball manager, working toward A+ scholarship, and reporting for the FFA. Outside of school, she is currently employed as a retail merchandiser and loves hanging out with friends. Her future plans are to go to State Fair Community College in Clinton, MO and then to UCM for a degree in Education.

The Ballard Staff has said: "Sydney is a respectful, hard-working, and responsible student. She has a positive nature about her and spreads it wherever she goes. She treats classmates, teachers and staff with respect by valuing each as an individual, respecting differences and valuing the work that others do. She is committed to success and works to the best of her ability. Sydney is an exceptional young adult!" and “I had the pleasure of getting to know Sydney as she spent the first semester as my teacher's aid in 1st and 2nd grades this year. I knew she was friendly. I knew she was fun and usually smiling. I learned that she is also very kind.

She has a giant heart; the kind that we need more of in this world today. She was willing to help however I needed. The biggest indicator of her personality is how the students in my class loved her! Sydney is a compassionate, kind, funny young woman. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to know her better.”

Sydney’s inspirational statement is: “You only get one life, so live it to the fullest!”

For Sydney's hard work in school, she is receiving a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks.”

Wild police chase Thursday evening in Kansas and Missouri

Tonight at 8:45 PM the Miami County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a pursuit entering the county on Jingo Rd by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Miami County Deputies responded to the area to assist and began the Pursuit protocol, engaging in the pursuit.

During the pursuit Miami County Deputies deployed a tire deflation device, commonly known as spike strips. The deployment was successful on both driver side tires, which substantially slowed the speeds of the fleeing vehicle.

At one point the pursuit entered Drexel, Missouri then came back into Miami County. In the area of 351st Street and 69 Highway the Kansas Highway Patrol utilized a tactical vehicle intervention maneuver, commonly known as the PIT maneuver, safely disabling the vehicle in the ditch.

A 34 year old adult male driver was taken into custody by the Linn Valley Police Department on their charges. Additional charges from Miami County will be submitted.

We are thankful of the safe and successful deployment of the many trained techniques that brought this pursuit to a peaceful resolution with no one injured.

Thank you to the Linn Valley Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Bates County, MO Sheriff’s Office and the Cass County, MO Sheriff’s Office for the assistance.
