Bates County Memorial Hospital is pleased to welcome a new provider to its Surgical Services department. Farid Namin, MD is a gastroenterologist and is currently seeing patients on an outpatient basis two times a month.
Dr. Namin said Dr. William Joyce, General Surgeon for BCMH, was instrumental in raising his interest in providing gastroenterological care in Bates County. On his first visit to the hospital, Dr. Namin said he was very impressed that the rural community boasted such a large facility with a modern surgical suite and extensive services.
Dr. Namin attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Health and Science Chicago Medical School, and the American University School of Medicine. He received his Master’s Degree in medical sciences and his medical degree in 1995. He then joined a research fellowship program at the University of Illinois, Division of Hematology and Oncology.
In 1998, Dr. Namin moved to Kansas City, where he completed his residency in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Kansas University Medical Center. He has done extensive research and is published in areas of functional bowel and motility disorders.

Obituary - Melva Jean Baldwin
Melva Jean Baldwin, 84, of Freeman, MO, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023 at her home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, March 9, 2023 at the Freeman Presbyterian Church in Freeman, Missouri, with the family receiving friends beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow in Paola City Cemetery in Paola, KS.
Melva was born December 27, 1938 in Paola, Kansas, a daughter of Melvin and Helen (Fury) Uzzell. Melva grew up in Kansas City, MO and graduated from Northeast High School. She spent her career working in news marketing for News America for 39 years in Kansas City, MO, although she also worked as a head cashier for Winnetonka High School in their cafeteria for a short stint. She married the love of her life, Homer Baldwin, Jr., on December 5, 1959.
After Homer’s retirement, Melva and he moved to Freeman, MO to a farm where she stayed for the last 30 years. She was an active member with the local food pantry and the Freeman Community Club, helping with their Easter and Halloween festivities each year as she loved volunteering in the community and helping at the Thrift Store. Melva loved spending time with her family.
Melva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Homer Baldwin, Jr., on May 27, 2021; a son, Daniel Lee Baldwin; and a daughter-in-law, June Baldwin. She is survived by one daughter, Debra Rodriguez (Bryan Smith), Freeman, MO; daughter-in-law, Vicki Kackley; sister, JoAnn (Jim) Thompson of Warsaw, MO; two sisters-in-law, Joyce (Roger) Marble, Garden City, MO and Carol (Herb) Eplee, Independence, MO; cousin, Bill Uzzell, Spring Hill, KS; 6 grandchildren: Eric Rodriguez, Stephanie (Adam) Kilpatrick, Nicholas (Megan) Rodriguez, Emily (Nick) Park, Amber (Guy Ryan) Rodriguez, Tom (Denise Thoreson) Kackley; 7 great-grandchildren: Jullian, Annebelle, Gunner, Charlie, Ezra, Joey, and June; and numerous nieces and nephews.

On February 27, 2023 just before 7AM the Deputy Coroner responded to a residence on west 1st St. in Adrian in response to a male found deceased in the residence. The case remains open at this time.
On March 4, 2023 just before 10:30AM the Coroner responded to a location on County Road 1801 in northwest Bates County. A male decedent had been located by family. The case remains open at this time.
On March 6, 2023 just after 3:30PM the Coroner responded to A Highway at County Road 7007 west of Rich Hill following a motor vehicle accident. One decedent, identified as 23 year-old Andrew Medina of Hume, Missouri is deceased in this accident.
On March 6, 2023 just after 7:30PM the Coroner responded to a residence on Wix Lane in Butler where are deceased female was found in her residence following a wellbeing check by Butler officers initiated by a concerned friend. The case remains open at this time.
Follow-up Investigations Completed:
On January 24 the Coroner responded to the BCMH ER in response to a 29 year-old female who died following transport from a residence. The investigation concluded with findings of death being accidental in nature.
