Obituary - Mark Phillip Jones

Mark Phillip Jones, 66, of Kansas City, Kansas, passed away March 9, 2023.

Mark was born February 4, 1957, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Vera (Smith) and Bob Jones. He graduated early, earning his degree from F.L. Schlage High School. He began dating the love of his life, Becky Lindsay, they had been married 45 years at the time of her passing on December 17, 2022.

He loved his family. Becky and Mark hosted many Christmas Day parties and other get-togethers at their beautiful home. He had many good friends with whom he loved spending time, traveling, or swapping stories. Mark seemed to know everybody in town, and could make a call and get things done. He was a storyteller and thought nothing of a two hour phone call. He really valued hearing your voice instead of texting.

Mark was a sportsman who loved the Lake of the Ozarks and fishing in the Forthview area. He began going to the lake with his Aunt Marge, who taught him how to fish. He followed NASCAR and all things Dale Earnhardt. The Chiefs lost one of their most avid fans this week. Mark was at many of their games and attended the longest game in NFL history (82 minutes and 40 seconds) on Christmas Day 1971 with his Dad.

He loved rock and roll, his homing pigeons, and dogs. He seemed to know everything about cars and cherished his Red 1952 GMC Pickup. He enjoyed pranks and a bit of mischief, and seldom missed an opportunity to tease. Most of all, Mark loved Becky.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, younger brother Matthew Lee Jones, and niece Paisley Jones. He leaves behind his brothers David (Margie) Jones, Randall Jones, sister-in-law Jackie (Marshall) Jones-Hockersmith, and Sheryl Jones, beloved niece and nephews, and many cousins.

Graveside services will be held Thursday March 16th at noon at Mossy Cemetery Mossy Cemetery M Highway in Edwards, Missouri.

Obituary - Eric Scott Lewis

Eric Scott Lewis age 39 of Springfield, Missouri passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 24, 2023 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton with visitation from 10:00-11:00 AM prior to the service. 

Burial to follow in Antioch Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri. Memorial contributions can be made to the Eric Lewis Memorial Fund and can be left in care of the funeral home.

Dr. Herre completed his residency in urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He received his B.S. in 2006 at the Loyola University Chicago and his M.D. in 2012 at The University of Kansas School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Urology.

Dr. Herre practices all aspects of urology but has a particular interest and expertise in minimally-invasive treatment of kidney stones, enlarged prostates and robotic surgery. Dr. Herre has presented at numerous national and regional meetings and has published numerous articles.

Linda Henry, 77 of Drexel, Missouri passed away Sunday, March 12, 2023 at her home in Drexel. A visitation will be held Friday, March 17, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (816-657-4400).

Obituary - Mary Jo Allen

Mary Jo (Butler) Allen age 60 of Calhoun, Missouri, passed away Friday, March 10th, 2023 at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Missouri. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton with visitation from 10:00-11:00 AM prior to the service. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri.

Mary was born on October 29, 1962 in Clinton, Missouri, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Hull) Butler.

Mary spent her school years in Clinton from kindergarten to the fourth grade. She then moved with her family to the Hull farm near Ladue, Missouri. Then fourth through the eighth grade at Davis R-12 School, graduating from Clinton High School in 1981.

In 1980 Mary started dating the love of her life Marvin. This was soon to be a long distance relationship. Her future husband was in the Marine Corp. stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii.

On January 2, 1982 Mary Jo married Marvin C. Allen directly after the wedding they left for New Bern, North Carolina. This was the next duty station for Marvin at Cherry Point. They moved to Leeton, Missouri after his honorable discharge from military service, with their young son, later moving to Calhoun, Missouri.

Mary had various jobs before becoming disabled.

Mary is survived by her husband Marvin of 40 years, her 2 sons, Bryan (Holly) Allen of Sedalia, Missouri; and grandchildren, Cameron and Gracelynn Allen. Brett Allen of Calhoun, Missouri, and granddaughter, Olivia Allen of Calhoun, Missouri, step grandson, Jayden Lara of Windsor, Missouri, 2 brothers, James (Rea Donna) Butler of Clinton, Missouri, and William Butler of Clinton, Missouri, 1 sister, Peggy (Ron) Shoemaker of Clinton, Missouri, 2 brothers in law, Richard Allen of Calhoun, Missouri, David Allen of Deepwater, Missouri, 4 sisters in law; Kathryn Ruble, of Mexico, Missouri, Linda Allen and friend Russell Adams of Green Ridge, Missouri, Lee Ann (Brian Long of Raytown, Missouri, Anita (Scott) Slaughter of Houstonia, Missouri, along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Proceeding her in death is her parents George and Elizabeth Butler, Velma Fletcher, John Allen and her nephew Nicholas Long.

Obituary - Linda Kay Scotten

Linda Kay Scotten, 78, Nevada, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Kay was born on October 5, 1944, in Nevada, Missouri, to Keith Kohl Kafer and Mary Ellen (Shafer). While growing up, she and her older brother Gary attended school in Nevada. She had many fond memories of their years at Jefferson school and often told the story of Nevada High School burning during her freshman year.

Kay began working at a young age and established life-long friendships along the way. She was employed by Vieth’s Cafe and Nelly Don. She and her family owned and operated Nevada Livestock Auction for 32 years, where customers and workers became extended family. In 1992, she opened Travel Bound Inc. She had a passion for helping others make memories, and she was able to make many of her own as she traveled the world with some of her best friends. For the last 15 years, Kay was an associate at Walmart. She enjoyed serving her customers and greeted everyone with a friendly smile and oftentimes, a hug.

Kay’s best job was being a mother. She raised four kids, Dirk, Troy, Shannon, and Heather, but always claimed many more as her own. It never failed that she would have a story about her kids or grandkids to share. Kay treasured time with her family. She loved being at Stockton Lake, the Missouri State Fair, and taking ski trips to Colorado. She hosted holidays and dinner every Sunday. Everyone looked forward to going to Grandma’s house. She was a great cook and made the best fried chicken in town!

Kay is survived by four children and their spouses, all of Nevada: Dirk and Debbi Scotten, Troy and Julie Scotten, Shannon and Krista Scotten, Chris and Heather Warner; thirteen grandchildren, Melanie Wiles, Monica Linn, Marlene Scotten, Tommy Scotten, Derik Scotten, Jordan Cauthon, Taylor Scotten, Janna Scotten, Spencer Scotten, Skyler Scotten, Carsten Brandt, Camryn Warner; numerous great-grandchildren; and 2 very special friends Donna Lutes and Marlene Hargrove. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gary Kafer, and infant daughter Wendy Ellen.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Private interment will follow. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested in her memory to the Nevada Show Choir in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Officer involved shooting in Missouri

On March 12, Hermann Police Chief Marlon Walker requested that the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigate an officer-involved shooting.

At 9:06 p.m. on March 12, two officers from the Hermann Police Department responded to Casey’s General Store in Hermann. The officers contacted Kenneth Lee Simpson, age 35, inside the store. The officers attempted to take Simpson into custody for multiple warrants from Franklin and Warren counties.

An altercation ensued and the two Hermann officers were shot. Detective Sergeant Mason Griffith was transported to Hermann Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Officer Adam Sullentrup, age 31, was transported to a St. Louis area hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Officers developed information indicating Simpson was in a residence near the scene in Hermann. A perimeter was established around the home and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s SWAT team and negotiators responded and worked to establish communication with Simpson.

At 1:49 p.m. today, Simpson exited the residence voluntarily and was taken into custody. Simpson will be transported to the Crawford County Jail where he will be held pending formal charges by the Gasconade County Prosecuting Attorney.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Hermann Police Department, Gasconade County Sheriff’s Office, Osage County Sheriff’s Office, St. Charles County Police SWAT team, St Charles County Police Bomb Squad, U. S. Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshals Service, Hermann Fire Department and Hermann EMS.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is continuing to investigate this shooting. The allegations against Simpson are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of these charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
