St. Clair County Sheriff's Office News Release March 14, 2023 through March 20, 2023

St. Clair County Sheriff Lee Hilty reported deputies made arrests and took multiple reports during the week of March 14, 2023 through March 20, 2023.

On March 14, 2023- St. Clair County recovered a stolen vehicle from Columbia, MO. The vehicle was located in the Community Center parking lot in Appleton City unoccupied.

On March 14, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies took a report of a missing person out of Collins. Subject was located and is okay.

On March 15, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies took a call regarding animal neglect on NE 800 Rd in Lowry City.

On March 15, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies recovered a stolen vehicle from Kansas City. Vehicle was located on SE 250 Rd in Collins unoccupied.

On March 16, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested Bobby Packham at St. Joseph Department of Corrections on a St. Clair County warrant for non-support. His bond was set at $1000 cash only.

On March 16, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies took a report of burglary on the 300 block of West 4th Street in Appleton City. Items missing are a personalized flashlight with the initials T & L and a Snap On torque wrench. Investigation is ongoing.

On March 16, 2023-St. Clair County Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at the Wildflower Inn. Subject was transported by ambulance to Golden Valley Memorial Hospital for a mental health check.

On March 16, 2003- St. Clair County Deputies took a report of theft from the Wildflower Inn. Money was reported missing from the front desk. Investigation is ongoing.

On March 17, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested Brandon Wood at Benton County Jail on St. Clair County warrants for charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession Drug Paraphernalia, Driving While Suspended/Revoked, and Careless and Imprudent Driving. His bond is set at $15,000 cash or surety.

On March 17, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies arrested Michael Foiles at the Jackson County Jail on St. Clair Count warrants for charges of Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. His bond is set at $15,000 cash or surety.

On March 17, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies took a report of fraud. Investigation is ongoing.

On March 17, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies took a report of stolen plates. Missouri registration 5FFV23. Plates have been entered in the nation database as stolen.

On March 17, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies received a call of an ex-parte violation and a vehicle being stolen off of SW 600 Rd in Eldorado Springs. Brandon Daniels was arrested in Vernon County by Vernon County deputies and the vehicle was recovered. Brandon Daniels was transported to St. Clair County Jail. No bond set.

On March 19, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on 82 Hwy and SW 1001 Road.

On March 19, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies responded to a structure fire on South Locust Street in Appleton City. Investigation is ongoing.

On March 20, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies assisted with a dog bite at Ellett Memorial Hospital in Appleton City. UPS driver was bit while delivering packages on NW 1200th Road in Henry County. St. Clair County deputies forwarded the report to Henry County Deputies and Henry County Health Department.

On March 20, 2023- St. Clair County Deputies were dispatched to SW Hwy DD in Eldorado Springs for a disturbance. Deputies searched the residence and located no other subjects at the residence.

Rich Hill man injured in rollover accident near Hume

On March 21st around 1:20 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies, Bates County EMS and Rich Hill Fire Department responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on A Highway and CR 10007 in rural Bates County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 21 year old Ronald R, Derr of Rich Hill, Missouri traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

Mr. Derr sustained moderate injuries in this accident and he was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene of the of this accident by Douty's Tow of Butler.

Obituary - David Edwin Myers

David Edwin Myers, age 63, a resident of Ft. Scott, Kansas, passed away Monday, March 20, 2023, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada, Missouri. 

He was born August 4, 1959, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of John Elmer Myers and Waneta B. Witsell Myers. Following high school, David earned an associate degree from Johnson County Community College. 

Throughout his life, David worked primarily in the grocery industry. He also did landscaping work. He was last employed by Price Chopper in Ft. Scott prior to loosing his eyesight. David married Servillana “Shirley” Laderan on March 8, 2007. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ft. Scott.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of the home and his daughter, Krystine Ryz Vitug Myers of Arizona. Also surviving are two sisters, Berniece Wells Pflum of Ft. Scott, Kansas and Faye Laird of Shawnee, Kansas.

Rev. Ken Ansell will conduct a memorial service at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 25th at the First Baptist Church in Ft. Scott. Cremation arrangements were handled by Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Obituary - Edward LeRoy Oyer

Edward LeRoy Oyer, 75, Nevada, Missouri passed away Sunday, March 19, 2023 at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, KS following a sudden illness. He was born July 22, 1947 to Frank and Lucille (Carpenter) Oyer. Ed was born and raised in Nevada Missouri. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1965.

On April 2, 1966, Ed married his childhood sweetheart, Connie (Johnson) Oyer and she survives of the home. Ed began working at Village Market in 1967 until February 1972. At this time, he began his career at 3M. He continued working for 3M until April 2005 when he retired.

Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising dogs, and competing in field trials. Ed’s joy in life was being involved in his grandchildren and great-grandchild’s activities. Ed enjoyed working in the yard and gardening. When the music was pumping, Ed and Connie were jumpin! During his lifetime, he enjoyed camping, skiing, family, and sports, esp. KC Royals and KC Chiefs. He was an NHS three sport athlete and a lifelong Tiger Fan.

After retirement, Ed volunteered at Care Connections where he delivered meals. He enjoyed meeting and visiting with those he met during this time.

In addition, survivors include his wife, Connie of the home, son, Doug Oyer and his wife Rene of Nevada, MO, daughter, Denise Engelhart and husband, Matt of Ashburn, VA; 3 grandchildren, Blake Engelhart, wife Camilla of Orlando, FL, Hunter Engelhart of Denver, CO, and Allie Engelhart of Ashburn, VA; Great-Granddaughter, Clara Rose Engelhart of Orlando, FL. Siblings Robert Oyer (Melba) KC, MO, Sharon Hammontree (Marvin) Overland Park, KS, and Lorrie Roberts (Buddy) Osceola, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends; and his dog, CiCi.

Ed was proceeded in death by his parents and infant sister, Shirley.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. A private committal will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Care Connections or Vernon County Cancer Relief c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Obituary - Edna Fern Cox

The funeral service for Fern will begin at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Deepwater, Missouri. Visitation will precede the service from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Hill preaching the service. 

Interment in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Deepwater, Missouri. Memorial suggested for Fern is the Ronald McDonald House and may be left at the church the day of services or at Hill & Son Funeral Home.

Edna Fern Cox, 87, of Clinton, MO passed away on March 17, 2023, at Golden Valley Hospital. Fern was born November 25, 1935, in Plattsburg (Mecca), Missouri, to John W. Wortman and Ethyl C. (Ruschaupt) Wortman. Fern graduated with the 1953 class of Birch Tree High School.

Fern was married to Oliver E. Cox, August 24, 1956. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

For many years, Fern worked for the city of Grandview, Missouri. She retired as City Clerk of Grandview, Missouri, February 1, 1998.

Fern enjoyed raising her children through little league sports, going to the lake, fishing, and gardening. Although she was preceded in death by her husband, following retirement, she built a house and moved to Truman Lake to live out the dream that she and Oliver had for so many years. 

After moving to Truman Lake, Fern became active with the Mt. Zion Methodist Church and the local women’s club. Fern also enjoyed wildlife and bird watching. She became an accomplished artist, painting numerous outdoor and wildlife scenes.

Fern is survived by Gertrude Lanier (sister), Bob Wortman (brother), three children Michael (Cindy) Cox, Kathryn (Michael) Byrnes, Steven (Sheila) Cox, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Fern Cox wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Golden Valley Hospital, Clinton Health Care and Rehabilitation Center and Mt. Zion Methodist Church.

Fatality accident early this morning in Cedar County

On March 21st around 2:35 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cedar County along with Cedar County Sheriff's Office responded to a one vehicle accident on 54 Highway around 3 miles east of Cedar Springs.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the westbound 1986 Ford F-150 driven by 55 year old Clay S. Wheeler of Quincy, Missouri was westbound when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and tree, then overturned as the vehicle overturned, Wheeler was ejected.

Mr. Wheeler was pronounced dead at 4:04 a.m. at Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs, Missouri.

This is Troop D of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 16th fatality accident of the year 2023.

Obituary - John Andrew Allen

John Andrew Allen, age 87, resident of Uniontown, Kansas, died Monday, March 20, 2023, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born September 30, 1935, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Chester Allen and Mildred (Baugh) Allen. John married Margaret O’Brien on July 21, 1955, in Baldwin, Kansas.

In his earlier years he worked for the Bronson School District. He and Margaret started and operated Allen’s Building and Repair Company for many years and then became the owners and operated the Bronson Self Service Station until his retirement.

He was a member of the Bronson Baptist Church. He was active with anything that involved his children and family, including 4-H, Junior Grange, coaching girls’ softball, and Boys Scouts.

He loved living at the lake, taking all his kids and grandkids fishing, water skiing/tubing and playing games…especially Jokers (Marbles). Like his wife Margaret, John’s biggest joy was just spending time with all his family.

Survivors include four daughters, Dinah Glaze, Iola, Sally (Frank) Johnson, Uniontown, Becky (Ben) Smith, Chanute and Annetta (Tim) Trammell, Farlington; three foster children, Gordon Kreider, Houston, Missouri, Willie (Debbie) Simpson, Blue Springs, Missouri and Joyce (Tom) Carder, Kearney, Missouri; one sister, Bonnie Trowbridge, Poway, California; one brother-in-law, Denney (JoJo) O'Brien, Lake Havasu City, Arizona; sister-in-law, Velma O’Brien, Bakersfield, California; grandchildren, Jamaal Glaze, Trey Glaze, Tayonna Glaze, Nevin Glaze, Andrew Johnson, Allen Johnson, Jerrod Smith, Bo Smith, Tiffany Gee; six foster grandchildren, Amber Sojka, Justin Simpson, Austin Simpson, Brian Simpson, Brandon Simpson, Niki Larrea; 24 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret; his parents; foster son, Melvin Simpson; brother, Willie Allen; Sister, Betty Garman; and granddaughter, LaCheole Glaze.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, March 24th, in the Cheney Witt Chapel conducted by Rev. Rusty Newman.
