Traffic Alert: One vehicle accident on D Highway east of Passaic

Traffic Alert:

The Missouri State Highway Patrol along with Bates County Sheriff's Deputies, Butler Fire Department and Adrian Fire Department are on scene of one vehicle accident on D Highway around 6 miles east of Passaic at this time.

One vehicle is said to be on its side in the north ditch of the roadway. No one is reported to be injured in this accident. 

We will update when more information is made available to us. 


Obituary - Eric D. Peterson

Eric D. Petersen, 54, of Belton, Missouri passed away Friday, May 26, 2023 at Hillcrest Hospital in Pryor, Oklahoma. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held from 12:30-4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2023 at the Meet Me on Main event space, 1515 Main Street, Belton, MO 64012.

Eric was born January 24, 1969 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and spent his first few years in Ashton, Iowa before moving to Rich Hill, MO in 1977. After graduating from Rich Hill High School in 1987, Eric moved to Belton, MO, and started working as a sorter and account controller for U.P.S. in the Lenexa, KS, warehouse.

Eric was united in marriage to Angela Carol Lemmer on September 17, 1988. Eric was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and a season ticket holder. He always arrived at the games hours early to enjoy tailgating and grilling steaks while making new friends. He enjoyed smoking a variety of meats, four wheeling, fishing and collecting John Deere tractor memorabilia.

Eric is survived by his wife, Angela Petersen; a daughter, Nikki Petersen, and son-in-law, William Baker; three sons: Levi Petersen, Wyatt Petersen, and Brody Petersen, all of Belton, MO; four grandchildren: Sarah Baker, Mason Baker, Bennett Baker, and Gavin Baker; his parents, Billie Petersen, Little Rock, IA; and Wanda and Ralph Chester, Vivian, SD; a brother, Aaron Chester, Minneapolis, MN; a sister, Amy Hoellein and her husband, Marty, Rapid City, SD; two nephews: Brady Hoellein and his wife, Cassidy, and Briley Hoellein, both of Rapid City, SD; and many other relatives and friends. Eric was preceded in death by his father, David Petersen.

Two arrested after police pursuit in Miami County Kansas

Yesterday the Miami County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of a vehicle traveling south on 69 Highway. Deputies positioned themselves on 69 Highway and were able to observe the vehicle traveling over 100 miles per hour.

As Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled into the City of Louisburg, running traffic lights and weaving through traffic. Deputies terminated the pursuit for the safety of the public.

While a Deputy was sitting at a stop light in Louisburg, a citizen waved them down and advised the tag information of the vehicle that fled and the possible direction of travel after terminating the pursuit.
Deputies ran the tag and drove in the direction where the vehicle was last seen by the citizen. 

A Louisburg Police Officer was able to locate the vehicle and an off-duty Paola Police Officer located its occupants in the area of South 3rd and Vine St. As Deputies and Officers attempted to take the driver into custody, he fought but was quickly taken into custody without incident A second subject, the passenger was taken into custody as well.

The investigation yielded the seizure of 7 grams of cocaine, 33 grams of marijuana, 22 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, thc cartridges, drug paraphernalia, and over $3000 in cash.

Spencer Thomas Rayne, 33 of Parker, Kansas was arrested and booked into the Miami County Jail on the following:
- Flee or Attempt to Elude Law Enforcement
- Interference with Law Enforcement
- Possession of a Controlled Substance
- Possession of Marijuana
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
- Distribution of Controlled Substance
- Several Traffic Infractions

Drew Marie Sears, 24 of Louisburg, Kansas was arrested and booked into the Miami County Jail on the following:
- Interference with Law Enforcement
- Possession of Hallucinogenic Drug

Yesterday's event shows how the level of cooperation between Law Enforcement and the community help to solve crimes. We are extremely grateful to the citizen who flagged the Deputy down and for the assistance of the Louisburg Police Department and Paola Police Department Officers.

Both Mr. Rayne and Ms. Sears are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Endangered Silver Advisory - Bobby W. Steward - Henry County Sheriff's Department

** Silver Alert **

The Henry County Missouri Sheriff's Office has issued an endangered SILVER advisory for 83 year old Bobby W. Steward from the area of W Highway in Henry County, Missouri. 

Steward has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and was last seen driving a White 2018 Dodge Ram, Missouri License (6DD-A54).

Obituary - Richard Earl “Spanky” Spangler

Richard Earl “Spanky” Spangler, age 73, of Warsaw, Missouri passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at his home. He was born on May 29, 1949 in York, Pennsylvania, the son of Phyllis J. Miller Spangler and Paul Junior Spangler. He grew up in Washington D.C. and graduated high school from Prince George, Maryland.

Richard served four years in the United States Army as a Parachute Rigger during the siege in Khe Sahn, Vietnam. He later attended college to study English.

Richard was an adventurous outdoorsman. He climbed mountains in Colorado Springs, fished for salmon in Alaska, was a professional logger in Washington state, raised cattle in Colorado and Missouri. Richard worked fifteen years with the Merchant Marine as Engineer/Wiper, on a NOAA ship. He even worked retail in the Mountain Chalet in Colorado Springs.

On January 1, 2012 he was united in marriage to Katherine Young in a private ceremony in the presence of their children. Then again in an official ceremony on May 29, 2022. Richard loved deeply and lived life to its fullest. Every day spent with him was an adventure. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis J. Miller Spangler and Paul Junior Spangler and one brother.

Richard is survived by his wife, Katherine Diane Young, of the home, a daughter, Amber Lynn Croft of White Plains, Kentucky, a son, Christopher Croft, of Stockton, Missouri, a daughter, Ruby Bristol, and her husband Zachary, of St. Roberts, Missouri, a son, Alexander Wilson and his wife Sarah Hill, of Jefferson City, Missouri, a son, Aidan LeGrande and his wife Amaya Spring, of Overland Park, Kansas, four grandchildren; Alena Munro and Raylen Munro, of St. Roberts, Missouri and Makenzie Croft and Grayson Croft, of Stockton, Missouri.

Graveside Services for Richard “Spanky” Spangler will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 5, 2023 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri.
