Obituary - Jessalee Fritts

Jessalee Fritts, age 88 of Garden City, Missouri formerly of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Medicalodge of Butler. She was born January 14, 1935 to Wilbur William and Doris Estelle Woods in Butler.

Jessalee, the oldest of seven children, grew up in Butler, Missouri and lived a short time in Arizona due to Wilbur’s health, then returned to Butler. She was in 4-H, assisted her mom prepare meals for those farming and helped watch her siblings. In December of 1952 she married John “Oren” Fritts and to this union, three daughters were born. Jessalee was a homemaker except for the short time she worked at the pecan plant while Oren was on strike at General Motors.

Jessalee was great at pie making and homemade bread. She always had the best flower gardens. Jessalee enjoyed square dancing with Oren, antiquing, going to garage sales in the city and sewing. She loved traveling, especially her trips to Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Jessalee is survived by three daughters, Barbara Campbell of Springfield, Missouri, Rita Umstattd and husband Doug of Garden City, Missouri and Linda Phillips of Butler, Missouri; 7 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Larry, Jerry, Sharon and Richard. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oren Fritts; and siblings, Gene and John.

Obituary -- Cynthia Ann Rhoads

Cynthia Ann Rhoades age 66, of Montrose, Missouri, passed away, Saturday, August 19th, 2023 at her home with her family by her side.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at the Vansant-Mills Chapel in Clinton, Missouri with visitation from 1:00-2:00 PM prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Cynthia Rhoads Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Cynthia Ann Rhoads was born on August 29, 1956 in Clinton, Missouri to Clayton and Shirley Landes.

Cindy worked in upholstery at Tracker Marine and in the fitting department at Wal-Mart in Clinton and Topeka. She enjoyed crocheting, play cards, drinking diet coke and reading. She loved investigation shows on TV but most of all she loved her grandkids.

Cindy is preceded in death by her husband C.L. Rhoads, her parents Clayton and Shirley Landes, and grandson Jason Caldwell.

Survivors include her children Carmen (David) Bristow of Clinton, Missouri, Michael (Angelia) Buce of Topeka, Kansas, Amy (Randy) White of Clinton, Missouri, Jerry Dale (Jeanne) Martin of Montrose, Missouri, and Sara Beth Martin of Montrose, Missouri, her sister Deborah (Jimmy) Greenwell of Deepwater, Missouri, 2 brothers Jr (Kate) Landes of Deepwater, Missouri, and Kevin (Carla) Foster of Deepwater, Missouri, 19 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren, and many other family and friends.

The family would like to thank ProMedica Hospice for all their care and compassion.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton, Missouri.

Amoret man arrested after traffic stop

On Monday August 21st around 11:42 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested 44 year old Daniel W. Wisdom of Amoret, Missouri after a traffic stop.

Mr. Wisdom was arrested on the following charges 1.) Felony possession of a controlled substance 2.) Driving while suspended/revoked 3.) Unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Daniel W. Wisdom was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and he was later cited with tickets and released.

Obituary - Emily Nicole (Sharp) Williams

Emily Nicole (Sharp) Williams, age 36 passed away on August 19, 2023, in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. She was born on October 26, 1986 in Jackson, Tennessee to Nancy (Sharp) Scarbrough and Doug Sharp.

Emily was baptized as an infant and confirmed at the age of 13 into the United Methodist Church.

She resided in Knoxville, Tennessee, moving to Montrose, Missouri at the age of 15. She graduated from Appleton City High School in 2005 and attended college at Fort Scott Community College.

Emily was employed by the United States Post Office as a rural carrier. Emily was also a Certified Nursing Assistant and Med Tech at several facilities.

Emily loved her children “to the moon and back”. Family was everything to Emily and she enjoyed many activities, games, trips, and time spent with her family. Emily was very caring, compassionate, and kind. Her favorite time of the year was Halloween and she loved anything spooky.

Emily is survived by her sons, Sawyer Williams (Hannah Haberle), Dayton and Hudson Williams; granddaughter, Weslyn; parents, Nancy and Byron Scarbrough of Columbia, MO and Doug and Dale Sharp of Alabama; brothers, Josh Herman and Ron Sharp of Knoxville, TN; grandparents, Kent and Ellen Higgins of Montrose, MO, Lena Scarbrough of Columbia, MO, and Wilma Wilson of Knoxville, TN; a very special aunt, Kay Sikra of El Dorado Springs, MO, with whom she was very close, and who helped her immensely; many family and friends too numerous to name.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday August 23rd from 10am-11am at Hill and Sons Funeral Home in Appleton City, Missouri. Funeral will follow the visitation from 11am. 

Obituary - Thomas Hartwell Epling

Thomas Hartwell Epling, 60, Nevada, MO passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at his home in Nevada. Tom was born February 18, 1963 in Kansas City, MO to Hartwell Riggs and Lilac Edith (Jill) (Holmes) Epling. He married Mary Ellen (Harry) Kutina on March 18, 2005 and she survives of the home.

Tom grew up in Adrian, MO and attended Adrian High School where he graduated in 1981. He moved to Nevada after graduating with a Journalism Degree from CMSU in Warrensburg. Tom worked in the newspaper business at Nevada Daily Mail and the Ft. Scott Tribune. He also worked at KNEM/KNMO Radio in Nevada, and KMOE in Butler. He was currently employed with the State of MO.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his step-children, Joseph Kutina, Sheldon, Anna Fritter (Kyle), Nevada, Winter Kutina, Nevada, Will Kutina, Nevada; step-grandchildren, Pierson Dennison, Parker Dennison, Paden Dennison, Piper Fritter, Niya Talbert, Kasen Talbert, Brooklyn Kutina-Smith, Loretta Kutina, and Bellamy Kutina; three siblings, Nancy Novitski (Mike), Indiana, Sally Land (John), Illinois, and John Caster (Heather), Los Angeles; nieces and nephews, Payton Smith, Jordan Smith, Aubrey Smith, Connor Novitski, Patricia Furrell, Conrad Castor (Danielle Billman), Colleen Castor (Mark Malcomb); great nieces and nephews, Samantha, Joey and Cassidy, Mark and Leia, and Charlotte and Evelyn. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, September 17, 2023 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Wine Journal in Adrian.
