State Farm Student Athlete of the week

We are excited to announce this week's Athlete of the Week, AJ Gunnels! AJ was nominated by Coach Dean after a great win against Appleton City. Coach Dean stated, “I would like to nominate Senior backup QB, AJ Gunnels for his performance last Friday night at Appleton City.

For the last two weeks, AJ has been serving as our backup quarterback as he got called into action after our starting QB, Mason Jackson, got a shoulder injury. AJ, prior to this point, had only played quarterback in junior high and spent most the season as a wide receiver, kicker, and punter.” Congratulations AJ, we enjoyed speaking with you!

About AJ:
AJ is a senior at Drexel High School. He is involved in football, basketball, soccer, and baseball. We asked AJ what he believes it takes to become an elite athlete. He told us, "it’s about always wanting to be the best you can be. Just always pursuing your goals. "

AJ’s favorite athlete is Devon Witherspoon, a cornerback for the Seahawks. He stated that Devon shows his athleticism on every play.
•Favorite sport: Whatever is in season

•Who inspires him: AJ’s dad, Joe, has inspired his athletic career. His dad always pushes him to be his best and reach the potential he has.

•Favorite sonic drink: Ocean water

We wish AJ and the Drexel Bobcats the best of luck the rest of the season! Tonight they play for the District Championship against Archie. Good luck to both teams tonight!

*Each week the athlete is awarded with a certificate and a gift card to Sonic. Each Athlete of the Week will be considered for one $500 scholarship which will be awarded in May.
