Missing inmate back in custody in Bourbon County Kansas

The Bourbon County Sheriff's Office reports that at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, inmates and correctional center staff supervisors were working in the 2100 block of South Horton in Fort Scott when 54 year old Melvin Foley walked away.

The Bourbon County Sheriff's Office says upon notification of the missing inmate, a search ensued, and Foley was found and taken into custody in the 700 block of Main Street. Foley is alleged to have entered a home in the 1300 block of South National where it appears he attempted to alter his appearance and change his clothes. It is also alleged that the inmate took personal property from the residence; all property taken was recovered from his possession at the time of his arrest and returned to custody.

The Sheriff's Office also apologized for the original and misleading Facebook post, and wanted to clarify inmate Foley did not escape from the jail, but from the work-release program which had been active in the community for many years without incident.

Local schools and government offices within the City limits were notified and used their discretion to conduct a lockdown as their protocols set out. Original social media posts noted Foley had been returned to custody by 10:36 a.m.
