Obituary - Lon Bernard Brown

Lon Bernard Brown, 93, went home to be with his Lord December 9, 2023, at Foxwood Springs Senior Living in Raymore, Missouri. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO, with the visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville, MO. In lieu of flowers, Lon requested donations to Courts Redford College of Theology and Ministry at Southwest Baptist University, 1600 University Avenue, Bolivar, MO 65613.

Lon was born December 1, 1930, in Garden City, Kansas, to Roscoe and Vivian Brown. He was married to Cecelia (Doby) Brown on August 22, 1954, in Waynesboro, Mississippi. Lon was a positive, outgoing person, always ready to give a smile and an encouraging word. He never said he was having a bad day due to his family upbringing and his faith in Jesus Christ. He was a natural athlete who played basketball and ran track in high school. His two triplet brothers often did his chores on the farm for Lon to be able to participate in sports. He placed second in the Missouri state track meet 1-mile race his senior year. He served in the Air Force until his honorable discharge to become a minister. He attended Southwest Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Lon served as a Baptist pastor for over sixty years across Mississippi, Arkansas, Michigan, and Missouri and even drove a school bus for a time for Raymore-Peculiar School District. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, but he loved fishing and went every chance he got. Lon and his triplet brothers, Larry, and Gene received a Guinness World Records award as the oldest living male triplets at 92 years 336 days old verified on November 2, 2023.

Lon was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Gleeson, Leeland, Ruby (Brown) Young, Forrest, and his wife Cecelia. He is survived by his triplet brothers Larry and Gene; his children Julia Brown, Gary Brown, Lloyd Brown, and Duane Brown; grandchildren Melissa Brown, Alexandria (Brown) George, Ryan Brown, Angela Brown, Colin Brown, Marissa Brown, Lillith Monroe, and Annabella Monroe; great-grandchildren Zane Letterman, Silas George, and Stefan George.

Linn County Kansas Sheriff’s Office responds to mental crisis call

On December 11, 2023, at 1:29pm, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a subject in mental crisis in Centerville, Ks. The subject, a 32-year-old male had been involved in a verbal altercation with family. 

The subject then attempted to steal a motor vehicle from family members. This attempt was not successful, despite breaking the window of the car out. The subject then walked to the Fire Station in Centerville where he forcefully took a 2005 Lincoln Aviator from a person who was working at the Fire Station.

 
The subject then met a Deputy Sheriff who was responding to the criminal event. The subject attempted to hit the Deputy Sheriff head-on near Goodrich on County Road 1077. The Deputy Sheriff turned westbound on 1775 Rd where the subject turned and began to chase the Deputy Sheriff. The Deputy Sheriff was in fear that the subject was going to rear end him and he turned into a field. The Deputy Sheriff then turned around and gave chase to the subject northbound on County Road 1077. The subject was driving in a very erratic manner and the Deputy Sheriff backed off when they approached Parker, Ks. speeds were too great to continue to chase the subject into the City of Parker.

 
At this time a request was made to lock down the school in Parker. The school resource officer secured the school and monitored the event. Linn County Sheriff’s Communications Division notified all surrounding agencies of the event and description of the stolen vehicle. Several minutes later the subject was spotted in Osawatomie, Ks. driving erratically. 

Police found the subject; he was not operating the vehicle but was attempting to steal another vehicle. The subject was taken into custody. Deputies went to Osawatomie and picked the subject up to transport him to the Linn County Jail, while in transport the subject attempted to kick the back window out of the patrol car. Eventually, the subject was received at the Linn County Jail where he is awaiting charges. No other information will be released at this time, this case is pending formal charges.

Butler Lady Bears Basketball defeated Rich Hill tonight in the first round of the Butler Tournament

The Butler Lady Bears defeated the Rich Hill Tigers with a final score of 63-55 in the first round of the Butler Tournament tonight. 

Butler Freshman Kylee Dubray led all scores with 30 points, she added in 14 rebounds on 11 of 19 shooting. Freshman Gabbie Carmichael pitched in 10 points and 6 assists for the Lady Bears. 

Miller led the Tigers with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Coonce and Phelps both chipped in with 15 points each. 

Butler will move on to play KIPP on Wednesday in the 2nd round of the Butler Tournament. 

In other Bates County news, the Adrian Blackhawks got the best of the Raytown Bluejays. More action coming this week from the Butler Tournament!

Freeman man arrested on sex charges against a minor

On Sunday December 10th the Cass County Sheriff's Deputies  were asked to assist the Department of Family Services regarding a child victim in Freeman, Missouri.

While there, deputies were informed the juvenile had been sexually assaulted. Deputies then arrested 23-year-old Bryce Caster of Freeman, Missouri and transported him to the Cass County Jail.

On Monday December 11, Cass County Prosecutors charged Caster with sexual exploitation of a minor child, which is a Class A Felony. 

He is also charged with two counts of 2nd degree child molestation — of a child who is 12 years or younger, which are Class B Felonies.

Mr. Caster is being held on a $250,000 cash only bond and is currently at the Cass County Jail.

Peer support training a great success

Last week, the Belton Missouri Police Department hosted a 40 hour peer support training class with FRST Midwest.

Over the past week, these 23 first responders from around the Kansas City metro, including Miami County Kansas Sheriff's Office Master Deputy Terry Burgoon are certified to provide peer support training within their agencies and for other agencies.

Public service announcement from the Butler Senior Center

Dirty Bingo tomorrow night at the Butler Senior Center is cancelled.

At last week’s board meeting, the Friends of the Butler Senior Center Board voted to suspend Dirty Bingo until March 2024.

Obituary - Donald C. Peters

Donald C. Peters, born August 11th, 1956, joined our Father in Heaven on December 10th 2023.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years Lonnie Sue (Green), son Jason Tyler Peters, daughters Lisa Marie Peters, Kelsey Lynne (Alex) Heath and grandson Grayson James Heath, a sister Ellen Peters Clemens and brothers Dale (Pam) Peters and John Peters. He was preceded in death by his parents Kathryn and Ed Peters, nephew Matthew Clemens, and brother-in-law Gary Clemens.

Born in Kankakee, IL with his childhood being spent in Deerfield, IL, he attended college at Northwest Missouri State University. He graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Nutrition. After graduation he took his first job in Fort Wayne, IN with Alied Mills selling animal feed.

Don met his wife Lonnie in the spring of 1979 and they married May 1st 1982.

From the moment they were married, whether it be coaching baseball, tearing down log cabins, raising their children, or doing civil war reenacting, they were a team, not always by Lonnie’s choice. After starting a family, Don decided on a career move. He took a job with Bristol-Myers selling animal pharmaceuticals. Throughout 30 years and numerous company buyouts the family settled in Peculiar, MO where he retired.

Don coached little league baseball in Ft. Wayne after college and would continue coaching his own kids as they got into sports. He was always the voice of encouragement they could hear. When his youngest daughter decided to join the cross-country team in school he thought why not start running. He continued even after she had graduated.

Still having so much to give, after retiring he took a position as Executive Director at the Cass County Historical Society. His love of history and his incredible ability to tell stories never failed him. From mock trials with middle schoolers, research, or talks given to any group who asked, he always had a captive audience. He had an amazing talent for getting people involved and having fun before they even knew what was happening.

Don had a great love for history, sports, fishing, gardening, and family. An avid baseball fan, he was a lifelong member of the Chicago Cubs fan club. He always planned things larger than life, whether it be work related, Easter egg hunts, Halloween parties on the farm, or just being one of the kids. His wit was unsurpassed, his heart large, and he will be missed greatly.

A visitation will be held at Cullen Funeral Home Inc., 612 W. Foxwood Dr. Raymore, Missouri 64083 on Friday, December 15, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For the visitation we would like to celebrate Don’s life and love for his almamater. We invite everyone to please wear white and green or any Northwest apparel to honor him. A memorial service will be held at Cullen Funeral Home, Inc. on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.

Butler Lions make donations for the holidays

 THE BUTLER LIONS CLUB made several donations last week just in time for the holidays. Top, Lion Wayne Vermillion presented a check to the Coats for Kids program accepted by Carol Ann Winburn and Jamie Pippin-Loe. Center, a check was presented to the Bates County Sheriff’s Office for the Shop With A Cop program and at bottom, Vermillion presented a donation to the Bates County community food pantry which was graciously accepted by Director Renee Bannerman.
