Chandler signs to play football at the University of Missouri

We would like to congratulate Nevada High School Senior Talan Chandler he signed to play football at the University of Missouri in Columbia. We wish you the best in your future endeavors Talan.

Butler Lady Bears Basketball team gets win against Summit Christian Academy

The Butler Lady Bears Basketball team traveled to Summit Christian Academy last night at Hy-Vee Arena.

The Lady Bears won the game 42-34 and several players for the bears scored in this game. Butler worked well as a team and now they move to 5-5 on the season.

Butler will now take a trip to rival Adrian on January 4th to play the Lady Blackhawks (6-4). 










Obituary - Dennis Wayne Wilson

Dennis Wayne Wilson, age 77, of Liberal, Missouri passed away December 17, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Dennis was born August 11, 1946 in Marion, Kansas to Jack Alva Wilson and Irene Rose (Hajek) Wilson. On April 19, 1980, Dennis married Joan Marie Tippett in Fayette, Missouri.

Dennis served in the US Navy until honorably discharged as a QM3. During his time in the Navy he served two tours in Vietnam on the USS Cabildo. He then worked for Southwestern Bell in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Barton County in 1979 where he began crop farming and raising cattle in Verdella. In 1986 he was elected as the District One Barton County Commissioner where he would serve for the next 30 years. 

He served on the Barton County Mutual Insurance board since 1995 and Chairman since 2007. He was a member of the Verdella Free Will Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Cattleman's Association, and volunteered with the Barton County 4H and Liberal Rec.

In his free time, he enjoyed fishing the pond, making cinnamon rolls, working cattle, model railroading, and helping neighbors in the community. He enjoyed cookouts at the pond, telling stories, and projects with his family. He was always proud to serve as the flag bearer in the Liberal parade and Veteran's Day program. He loved being one of Santa's helpers.

Survivors include his wife Joan; one son, Derrek Wilson (Marjan Dallali) of Montreal, Canada; two daughters, Karrie Adams-Buoy of Waldorf, Maryland and Jeanette (Clayton) Turley of Rogers, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, Robyn Adams, Jackson Adams, Kaelyn Buoy, Logan Buoy, Eryn Buoy, Camryn Buoy, Lauren Turley and Morgan Turley; one brother, Ralph (Lynda) Wilson of Odessa, Missouri; two sisters, Carolyn Hurt of Riverside, Missouri and Debbie (Brian) Turner of Holden, Missouri.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Tracie Wilson; two brothers, Mark Wilson and John Wilson; one sister, Marilyn Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Verdella Free Will Baptist Church in Liberal, MO., with burial to follow at Barton City Cemetery in Liberal, MO.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Verdella Free Will Baptist Church in Liberal, MO.

Contributions are suggested in lieu of flowers and may be made payable to the Barton County 4H, Peterson Outdoor Ministries for injured and recovering veterans, The Hanna Project, a humanitarian organization of the Free Will Baptist in care of Daniel Funeral Home.

Obituary - Douglas Edward Cass

Douglas Edward Cass, 72, Metz, MO, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023 at his home. Doug was born October 28, 1951 in Beatrice, NE, to Edward Melvin and Elizabeth Ann (Gilham) Cass. He married his high school sweetheart, Theresa Rae Dougherty on November 21, 1969 in Beatrice, NE, and she survives of the home.

Doug was raised in Beatrice and graduated from Beatrice High School in 1970. Upon graduating high school, he went on to graduate from Culinary Art School and went to work for Bishops Cafeteria in Lincoln NE eventually working his way to manager. In 1988, he and Theresa came to Nevada where he worked at T.M. Deal Lumber, Ortho Flex Saddle, Midwest Lumber Company in Butler, and in the Pest Control Business for the past 20 years. In 2010 he began his own business, Doug Cass Pest Control, retiring from it in 2021. Doug enjoyed gardening, wood working, stamp collecting, raising chickens, researching genealogy and sharing with his grandchildren the history of his collections. Doug was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada.

Survivors include six children: Aimee (Daniel) Steffes of Chilton, WI, Megan (Jimmy) Morris of Jasper, MO, Rebekah (Skip) Yoder of Nevada, MO, Hannah (Drew) Hinkle of Sheldon, MO, Elisabeth (Jacob) Mosher of Nevada, MO, Susanna (Mohsen) Dadashi of Fayetteville, AR; grandchildren: Abigail, Joseph, Noah (Rebekah), Christian, Elizabeth, Caleb, Isaac, Seth, Ethan & Gideon Steffes, Connor and Caitlin Cass, Krista, James, Joel, Drew, Lucas, Kailyn, Grant & Kinsley Morris, Levi, Katie Beth, Charis, Dawson, Evan, Lydiah & Micah Yoder, Erin Hinkle, Eleanor, Winston and Stella Mosher, Kamran Dadashi. Surviving siblings: BethAnn, Minnetonka, MN, Richard, Omaha, NE, and Dennis, North Carolina; mother of his son’s children, Melissa Cass, Australia. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Aaron Cass.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 22, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Terry Mosher officiating. A private burial will be held in Pryor Creek Cemetery in Metz.

Memorials are suggested to the “Peterson Family Ministries” c/o Ferry Funeral Home.

Bringing a fallen hero home

Several emergency first responders paid respect to a local fallen hero as the body of United States Army SFC Cody Lee Collett Cosner was brought home to Butler Tuesday evening.

Local emergency personnel stood on overpasses with American Flags in several cities as the escort for the fallen hero made its way down I-49 tonight.

The escort was provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Lees Summit Police Department. SFC Cosner died in North Carolina on December 10th.

Funeral services for United States Army SFC Cody Lee Collett Cosner of Hope Mills, North Carolina formerly of Butler, Missouri will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 22 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel.

Cody is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Katie” Cosner, one daughter, Georgia Cosner and one son, Bodie Cosner all of the home; his parents, Carrie and Johnny Collett of Butler, Missouri; a brother, Wyatt Wayne Collett Cosner of Butler, Missouri; and a sister, Alexis Goodale and husband Michael of Chicago., Illinois.

The Butler Police Department would like to thank all the agencies that came together tonight to welcome Cody back home one final time.

Butler High School Christmas Concert Highlights...

The Butler High School Musical Department held its yearly Christmas concert tonight. 

The audience was rocking and rolling to several of your favorite classic Christmas songs such as Frosty the Snowman and Jingle Bell Rock. All the kids did exceptional tonight.
