Obituary - Joy Ann Crook

Joy A. Crook, 83, of Archie, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville, MO. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 8, 2024 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, MO. 

The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00-2:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Contributions may be made to the Austin Baptist Church or the Missouri Baptist Children's Home.

Joy was born December 18, 1940 in Austin, MO, one of nine children of Melvin Cyrus and Edna Orilla (Lancaster) Day. She grew up in Austin on the Day Farm and graduated 8th grade from Austin School #54. She was a 1958 graduate of Archie High School. Joy was a lifelong Austin/Archie resident. Joy was united in marriage to Joe Crook on April 4, 1958 in Pleasanton, Kansas, with Joe’s uncle, Rev. Dan Goddard, officiating.

Joy helped start the Archie Educational Day Care Center at the First Baptist Church in Archie, and worked there for 35 years until her retirement. She was a member of the Austin Baptist Church and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Archie.

Joy was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandy, and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband, Joe; three daughters: Barbara (Bob) Brewster, Adrian, MO; Cindy (Robert) Furr, Republic, MO; and Tracy (Duane) Summers, Harrisonville, MO; her additional children: son, Dustin Gregg, Harrisonville, MO; and daughter, Dixie Paul, Lee’s Summit, MO; one brother, Harold Dean Day, Harrisonville, MO; and 32 grand and great-grandchildren.

Cass County Judge dies after medical emergency on I-49 near Peculiar

On Friday January 5th, around 6:58 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County along with the Cass County Sheriffs Department responded to a one vehicle fatality accident in the northbound lanes of I-49 at mile marker 164 near Peculiar in Cass County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when 48 year old Jeffery L. Cox of Raymore, Missouri experienced a medical event while driving and it caused the vehicle to travel off the roadway and strike a tree.

He was transported to Belton Regional Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 20:04 hours. Mr. Cox was the Associate Circuit Judge and former Cass County Presiding Commissioner. 

Cox was elected to the 17th Circuit bench in 2018 following six years as Presiding Commissioner beginning in 2012. He will be missed by many.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the entire area, in effect from 6 AM Monday through 6 PM Tuesday.


Structure fire in Nevada

The Nevada Fire Department along with the Nevada Police Department is on scene of a fully engulfed structure fire at this time on W Austin Blvd near S Clay Street. Please use caution if you travel in this area! Austin Blvd is currently shut down.

Smith gets 100 career wrestling win

The Sherwood Marksmen Wrestlers have a new member to the 100 wins club! Congratulations to Mason Smith on a fantastic achievement!

Butler Varsity Wrestling News

Butler hosted a varsity girls and boys wrestling tournament this weekend. There were a lot of great matches on both sides. Friday night we hosted 20 teams from MO and KS.

Individual Results:
Airyanna Nuzum: 8th place. 3-2 on the night.
Ashlynn Turner wrestled hard, but couldn’t pick up a win. 

The boys tournament on Saturday. Team: 6th place.

Adrian Blackhawks Wrestling News

The Adrian Blackhawks Wrestling Team wrestled this weekend at the Butler Invitational Wrestling Tournament  with the girls competing Friday and the boys competing today.

On Friday the girls had 6 competing finishing 7-13 for 15th as a team with less than half of a full line up.

Train derails, crashes into home near Milo


Train derails, crashes into home near Milo...

Officials in Vernon County, Missouri have confirmed a train derailment that occurred on Friday evening near the town of Milo, Missouri.

Crews say that 18 cars derailed on a property in Milo. The derailing train cars damaged a nearby dilapidated commercial building and destroyed an RV camper trailer.

No one was reported injured. Mid America Live will update when more information is made available to us. the train was not carrying hazardous materials.
