Our Office recognizes the passing of Associate Circuit Judge Jeff Cox with deep sadness.

Sheriff Weber has ordered all uniformed staff to wear mourning badges until the conclusion of funeral services. Details about memorial services or any arrangements to honor Judge Cox will be communicated as soon as they are available.

Judge Cox was involved in a motor vehicle accident Friday, January 5 after suffering a medical event. He was pronounced deceased shortly after at Research Belton Hospital.

Judge Cox was a dedicated and respected member of our Justice Center family. His contributions to the legal community and his commitment to upholding justice have left a lasting impact on us all.

We understand this news may be difficult to process, and we want to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this challenging time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Obituary - Roger Cornell

Roger Hal Cornell, 84 of Stilwell, Kansas passed away on January 4, 2024, at Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Kansas City, Missouri. A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Mana Fellowship Church, 17617 Route 291, Pleasant Hill, MO 64080. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am Wednesday, also at the church. 

Graveside services will be 1:30 pm Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Services under the direction of Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009). Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Roger was born on November 8, 1939 in Passaic, Missouri to Walter and Thelma (Webb) Cornell. Roger attended elementary school in Butler, Missouri and he graduated in 1957 from Grandview Senior High School, where he was involved in many sports. Roger attended Central Missouri State University and he was a United States Marine Corps reservist. Roger was appointed to the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department in 1961 and he retired with the rank of Battalion Chief in 1997 after a rewarding career. Roger, a humble and unassuming man, had a strong work ethic, holding a second full-time job while also working as a firefighter. Roger continued to work part-time until his late seventies after his retirement from the Fire Department. Roger loved to read, study history, travel, snow ski, hike and bicycle, and he enjoyed taking care of his yard. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, son Curtis, and his beloved Yorkie Katie canine, also known as KTK9.

Roger is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith (Hunt) Cornell, daughters Leslie (Paul Kies) and Jennifer (Justin Teiwes), grandsons Christopher Cornell, Jack Teiwes, Brock Cornell and granddaughters Rachel Kemp and Ava Teiwes. He is also survived by his sisters Joyce Wead and Jeana Reed and many nephews and nieces.

Kansas City man in Cass County Jail for Kidnapping, Several Other Charges

47-year-old Aaron Madison of Kansas City, Missouri faces several charges after being arrested on Saturday, January 6. Madison is charged with second-degree kidnapping, second-degree domestic assault and a third-degree charge of domestic assault.

He also faces first-degree charges of sodomy and harassment (two counts of the latter). On Friday January 5, two adult female victims arrived at the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

One of them had visible bruises, saying she had been unable to leave a residence in rural Harrisonville for two days. Cass County Sheriff’s Office

Detectives then talked to the victims and identified Madison as a suspect. Detectives listed Madison as a person of interest to statewide agencies. On January 6, Kansas City, Missouri police were able to locate Madison and make an arrest.

A Cass County deputy then transported Madison to the Cass County Jail. Madison is currently being held at the Jail. His bond is set at $500,000.

Obituary - Charles Floyd Courtois

Charles Floyd Courtois, age 74, Independence, Missouri passed away Friday, January 5, 2024 the result of a motor vehicle accident. He was born in Pleasanton, Kansas on August 13, 1949 the son of William and Mildred Holmes Courtois. 

He graduated from Butler High School. Before retiring, he worked as a supervisor for Time Warner Cable. He enjoyed his Norton motorcycle, Raiders Football and KU Basketball. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Courtois. 

Charles is survived by a daughter, Victoria Courtois-Hendon and husband Daniel, two sons, William Courtois and wife Melissa, and Kene Courtois and wife Brandy, two brothers, Kevin Courtois and Jim Courtois, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, January 13, 2024 at the Pleasanton First Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm Friday, January 12 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton Chapel. Private family burial will be held at Holmes Cemetery. Tuesday Commute Impacted

Conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate tonight leading to slick road conditions. Strong winds are expected to develop tonight, creating areas of blowing snow throughout the day on Tuesday across the region. 

While snow is expected to come to an end Tuesday afternoon, the strong winds will remain until Tuesday evening creating blowing snow.


Obituary - Patricia "Pat" Mashek

Patricia Sue Mashek, 74, Deerfield, MO passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Medicalodges Nevada, following a lengthy illness. Pat was born on March 17, 1949, in Nevada, MO, to David and Louise (Ring) Nickelson. She married Lee Mashek on April 25, 2000, and he preceded her in death in 2012.

Pat was raised in Bronaugh and attended Bronaugh schools. Pat worked as a waitress most of her life, both at the Trail Blazer and then the VFW-Nevada until retirement. She was an avid coin collector and was known for her straight-forward honesty.

Survivors include her six children, Kevin Kastl (Missee), Ft. Scott, KS, Mary Hilliard (Kevin), Claremore, OK, Miria Atkins (Kelly), Ft. Scott, KS, Donald Wittenberg, Eve, MO, Frederick Wittenberg, Deerfield, MO, and Jodi Leatherman (Clint), Redfield, KS; nine grandchildren, Triston, Wyatt, Jessica, Daryn, Leah, Baylee, Lukas, Xabier, and Daniel; a brother, Bill Nickelson (Marlane), Mulberry, KS; a sister, Betty Simpson, Pittsburg, KS; and several nephews. Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Mashek; a granddaughter, Lacey Paige; her parents; four brothers and one sister.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Richland Cemetery, Richards, MO, with Pastor Bill Platt officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.
