Lady bulldogs too much for lady tigers

On Friday night, Rich Hill prepared to host the Appleton City Bulldogs on what was court-warming for the Tigers. 

For the ladies, the Bulldogs come in with a very impressive 18-3 record on the year. They are led by a young core who are looking to bounce back from going 2-2 in their last 4 contests after rattling off an 8 game win streak in the mid-part of the season. The Lady Tigers were coming off of a 44-27 win over Drexel and would be looking to ride that momentum in the current contest.

The opening tip-off was secured by Appleton who turned the ball over into the hands of the Lady Tigers to start the contest. Appleton would eventually draw first blood, and jumped out to an early 9-0 lead until Coonce was able to put in a free throw to get Rich Hill on the board and spark a quick 3-0 run. At the conclusion of the first, the Bulldogs led the Tigers 11-3.

After Appleton struck first in the second period, the Lady Tigers would answer back with a few buckets of their own. After the brief bucket exchange, the Tigers would rattle off a 7-3 run to find themselves trailing just 25-14 going into the break. The second quarter was more tightly contested as Rich Hill would only be outscored 14-11 in the period.

Engeman triggered the scoring for the ‘dogs in the second half, but Miller fired back with a basket for Rich Hill. Kady James laid down a three ball for Appleton, but was followed by Miller hitting a couple of jumpers, then a deep ball from Burris that sparked a 7-2 run by the Tigers. The Rich Hill run forced the Appleton Coach to signal a time-out, leading 32-25. Phelps would hit a shot from distance to initiate a 5-0 Tigers run and find themselves trialing by just 4 (34-30). Appleton would score last in the quarter, taking a 36-30 advantage in the fourth and final quarter.

To begin the final quarter, the Bulldogs would drive the basket and score first, before Phelps sunk a 3 ball to pull back within 5 (38-33). It would be back and forth action for much fourth quarter, until Appleton City would close out the game with a 10-2 run to grab a 53-29 win.

Olivia Engeman led all scores with 12 points and 6 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs had 8 players record a basket on the night.

The Lady Tigers were led by Lanie Phelps with 11 points, followed by Kayden Coonce with 10 points and 8 boards.

Lady bears pull away late to beat Warsaw Lady Wildcats

The Butler Lady Bears got a win on the road tonight against Ozark Highlands Conference rival the Warsaw Lady Wildcats 54-49. 

The lady bears were led in scoring by Adyson Clover who had 24 and Kylee DuBray who had 14. 

Butler was able to hit 4 critical free throws late in the 4th quarter to secure the win. The lady bears will be back on the road Monday evening as they travel to take on the Stockton Tigers. 

114 grams of meth seized after traffic stop in Miami County Kansas

On Thursday February 8th Miami County Kansas Sheriff's Deputy Yeast conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle.

During the stop K9 Clay alerted to the vehicle and a searched was conducted. When the vehicle was searched 114 grams of Methamphetamine was located in the vehicle! Great job by our K9 team!

Missouri Senate recognizes Archie High School for winning football championship

Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt's staff stopped by Archie High School on Wednesday to recognize the 2023 football team. 

The team was presented with the Congressional Record which was read on the Senate floor in December in Washington, D.C.

Appleton City High School Bright Future Friday

We would like to congratulate ACHS Senior Coy Stephan has been accepted to Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC). 

Coy recently toured the OTC Richwood Valley Campus, located between Ozark and Nixa, MO, and is excited about furthering his education there. Congratulations, Coy!

Rogers scores 1000th career point for Lady Hornets

We would like to congratulate Hume High School basketball player Brileigh Rogers for making 1000 career points on February 8th. Way to go Brileigh!

Arrest made for drugs in Butler

On February 3rd a Butler Officer was patrolling the area of the storage units located near Sandy’s Herb shop when he observed a subject that appeared to be unconscious inside his vehicle. The Butler Officer attempted to check on the well being of the subject inside the vehicle who was later identified as Travis Herman. 

The Butler Officer was able to wake Mr. Herman up and immediately observed a glass pipe commonly associated with smoking methamphetamine in Mr. Herman’s lap. The Butler Officer then asked Mr. Herman to step out of the vehicle. 

When Mr. Herman opened the driver door to the vehicle, The Officer immediately observed a bag of suspected methamphetamine in the driver’s door of the vehicle. The substance field tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed approximately 40 grams. Travis Herman was then arrested and transported to the Bates County Jail.

 
A few days later, on the evening of February 6th the same Butler Officer was inside Casey’s General Store and observed Travis Herman in the store. The Officer stated “I hope you are not driving.” To Herman. The Officer stated this because he had prior knowledge due to his recent encounter with Mr. Herman on 02/03/2023 that Mr. Herman’s Driver License was suspended. 

The Officer then left Casey's but remained in the area to ensure that Mr. Herman did not drive on a suspended license. Shortly after, the Butler Police Department received a call of a disturbance in the Wall Mart parking lot. The response time of the Officers to the disturbance was less than one minute and upon Officers’ arrival to Walmart, there was no people or vehicles matching the description given to dispatch by the caller. 

Officers believed this to be suspicious and listened to the recording of the phone call. Upon listening to the recording of the call placed to dispatch, Officers recognized the voice of the caller to be that of Travis Herman. Officers believe Mr. Herman placed this call in order to divert them away from the area that he was in. Officers then responded to Mr. Herman’s residence and placed him under arrest and transported him to the Bates County Jail for making a false report.

Happy Retirement Chief Zoglmann

We would like to congratulate Milo Fire Department Chief Steve Zoglmann on his retirement as Fire Chief after serving for the past 30 years.

Many thanks to the Milo Fire Department Board of Directors and firefighters as well as the many local departments for the special send off. It was greatly appreciated.
