Attention Bates county political candidates...

 

Mid America Live and the News-Shopper is offering each local candidate the opportunity to introduce yourself to the public through our paper and web site free of charge in a special news feature. 

Candidates can submit a photo along with  no more than 500 words saying what you believe would be appealing to voters.

Candidates of all parties are highly encouraged to participate as we will present all submissions together in the July 24th edition of the News-Shopper as well as on line at MidAmericaLive.com

Please respond with submissions by 4 pm on July 15th. 500 word submissions with photo may be emailed to midshopper@gmail.com

Note that any candidates not responding will be named in the article but will be accompanied by only the position they are running for. However, in turn we will attempt contact of non responsive candidates in order to be as fair as possible. Please help spread the word.

Obituary - David “Ted” Theodore Hopson

David “Ted” Theodore Hopson, age 81, of Belton, Missouri, passed away on Friday, June 7th, 2024.

Services will be held on Friday, June 14th, 2024, at Cullen Funeral Home, 612 W. Foxwood Dr. Raymore, Missouri 64083. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by a prayer service at 11:00 a.m.

Ted was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 27, 1942, to Elmer A. Hopson and Eugenia May (Shafer) Hopson. Ted graduated from East High School and honorably served his country in the United States Navy where he began his career as an electrician. He excelled in his career becoming a Master Electrician. He Retired after fifty years and was a member of IBEW Local Union 124 in Kansas City, Missouri. 

Ted was a member of the KC Chuggers which was a Model T Club and had an avid love for Street Rods. Ted was also a member of the Good Sam Club, and a member of a drama club in Texas, where Ted and Jean spent many winters during retirement. Ted loved animals and kept a supply of dog treats handy for all the neighborhood dogs. Ted helped to start the local AA group for teens in Grandview, Missouri.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Eugenia Hopson; and brother Michael John Hopson.

He is survived by his wife Jean Hopson; children, Jennifer Hopson, Stephanie McLean, Tamara Haus (Paul) and Timothy Brodrick (Lesley); brother, Elmer Joseph Hopson; sister, Mary Newbert; eight grandchildren, Lena Contreas, Dean Parker, Aric Parker, Elizabeth Haus, Mitch Haus, Alison Brodrick, Elli Brodrick, and Lukas Brodrick; and two great grandchildren, Kaydalene and Margo.

Obituary - Laura Ellen Paul

Laura Ellen Weitman Paul, age 76, of LaCygne, Kansas passed away Friday, June 7, 2024. She was born on December 22, 1947, in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Ivan R. and Edna F. Parrish Weitman. She graduated from LaBelle, Missouri Rural High School in the class of 1965.

She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Truman State University and established her career as being the Parker Second Grade teacher hired by USD 362 in 1969 and remained in that position for forty years. Besides teaching, Laura also had passions for reading, cooking, and sewing (especially baby things and quilts.) She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandma. Laura was united in marriage to Raymond E. Paul on February 12, 1972. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Laura is survived by her loving husband Raymond E. “Butch” Paul of over 52 years; a son Matthew Gerard and his wife Quynh Anh Paul; a daughter Rachel Erin and her husband Jeffrey Pommier; a sister Francie Geisendorfer; four grandchildren: Grace Pommier, Leah Pommier, George Paul, John Pommier; a loving church family; and many friends

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in LaCygne. A rosary will be prayed 7PM Wednesday at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, LaCygne Chapel. No visitation is scheduled.

City of Rich Hill is asking that the citizens conserve water starting at noon today until further notice

The City of Rich Hill is asking that the citizens conserve water starting at noon today until further notice. There is a pipe replacement project at the water plant that will be completed tomorrow.

Per Ordinance 1768:

1. Stage One (voluntary) - Request voluntary conservation and compliance with the following restrictions:
a. Sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, patios or other paved areas shall not be washed.
b. Swimming pools shall not be filled or refilled with water provided by the City.
c. Water shall not be used for recreational purposes such as waterslides or yard play.
d. Cars, other motor vehicles, trailers or boats shall not be commercially washed, except from a bucket.
e. Water shall not be used for dust control.
f. Flushing of mains by Water Department personnel shall not be done, except to alleviate individual water quality problems.
g. Commercial and industrial Users shall conserve water as much as possible.

After initiation of Stage One, if weather conditions, expected trends in demand or other factors indicate that the threat of a shortage will continue, the additional provisions of Stage Two shall be implemented.

Bates County Fair Queen Candidate Rachel Elaine Dugan

Rachel Elaine Dugan is the 18 years old Daughter of Ross and Alisia Dugan. She is a 2024 graduate from Butler high school. In high school Rachel was involved in Volleyball , Softball, Senior Class Secretary/Treasurer, FCCLA,Spanish club held office secretary three years, a Member of National Honors Society, active FFA member all four years of high school holding office of treasurer her senior year. In FFA Rachel competed in many contest teams and this spring got her State Degree. Rachel also works at Bates County Vet Clinic. 

She has grown a love for agriculture and a love for animals over the years. With the fair she loves to show support to the fair because the fair brings the community together and supports the youth of the community. She hopes everyone can come visit all the exhibits and have fun supporting the youth at the fair. 

To continue Rachel's love for Agriculture she plans to attend Fort Scott Community college to study Agriculture in the fall. Rachel is selling raffle tickets for $1 a piece. Prizes for the raffle will be as follows 1st Prize-$500 Gift Card To Woodward Meat, 2nd Prize-$300 Gift Card to Hertzog Meat Co., 3rd Prize-$100 Gift Card to Mc Bee's, 4th Prize-$100. 

Money raised by the candidates go towards to improving the future fairs and the fairgrounds. Drawing will be held during the fair. You do not need to be present for the drawing.
