MDC seeks bids for next phase of Schell-Osage Conservation Area wetland renovation project

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is soliciting bids for the next phase of its wetland renovation project at Schell-Osage Conservation Area. 

The project will renovate the wetland and Schell Lake and includes removing several levees, ditches, water control structures, roads, and hunting blinds. The project was developed through MDC and Ducks Unlimited and their engineering consultant, Maurer-Stutz, Inc.

The renovation project is two individual projects being bid at the same time under one contract. The work will construct natural levees and ditches, additional wetland, 16 water-control structures, 28 new hunting blinds including two ADA blinds, seven boat ramps, six fishing jetties including one ADA jetty, three islands in the lake, numerous fish beds, three-miles of water supply pipe from the new pump station, and nearly two-miles of new deepwater habitat in the lake.

A pre-bid meeting will be held for interested contractors at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Schell-Osage area headquarters, 4662 South 2950 Road, near Schell City. Bids will open at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign

Osceola Police Department will be working overtime August 18 through September 2nd. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign targets impaired drivers and removes them from the roadways.

Preliminary 2023 data shows 182 people were killed and 703 were seriously injured on Missouri’s roadways in crashes involving at least one substance-impaired driver.

This campaign is made possible with funding provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation and NHTSA.

Obituary - Pastor John T. Kellum

Pastor John T. Kellum, age 56 of Prescott, Kansas passed away on August 14, 2024, in Decatur, Texas. He was born on July 26, 1968, to Robert Kellum and Theresa Alldaffer in Kansas City, Kansas. John married Rebecca Stevicks on July 2, 1991, in Osage City, Kansas.

John has been the Pastor of Prescott Baptist Church for the last twenty-two years. Although a Pastor, he has done various tasks during his ministry years. In addition to being a Pastor, he was also a bus driver, a youth pastor, and an associate pastor. John loved being a pastor and was always helping lead others to Christ. He also worked at Value Merchandise for fourteen plus years in various departments of the company. John was very fond of collecting eagles and ships, and he loved to fish. Anyone who knew John also knew he was an avid sports fan.

Although he loved all types of sports, he never missed watching the Kansas City Chiefs. In addition, he loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Theresa, and a sister, Rebecca Hartman.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca of thirty-three years, a son, John Kellum Jr. and wife, Rachel of Alvord, Texas, and three daughters, Sara Black and husband, Kevin of Fort Scott, Kansas, Tiffany Kellum of Cabot, Arkansas, and Grace Kellum of Prescott, Kansas, as well as his seven grandchildren who were the light of his life, Nathan, Isaiah, Rebecca and Abigail Black, and Maddalynn, Mckenna and Titus Kellum. He is also survived by a brother, Gary Kellum and a sister, Patty Mastel and husband, Mike, and a great host of friends.

Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, August 22, 2024 at the Schneider Funeral Home, Pleasanton, Kansas. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at the Schneider Funeral Home, Pleasanton Chapel. Burial will be in the Prescott Cemetery.

Obituary - Doris M. Heckadon

Doris M. Heckadon, 96, of Adrian, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home, Saturday, August 17, 2024. Funeral services will be 10:30am Friday, August 23, 2024 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, MO.

Burial to follow at the Virginia Cemetery, Virginia, MO. The family will receive friends 6:00-7:30pm Thursday at the funeral home.

Obituary - Bradford "Brad" Doolin

A life on earth has ended and has begun with Joy in Heaven.

Bradford Lynn “Brad” Doolin, 70, Richards, MO passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, August 16, 2024.

Brad was born on July 12, 1954 in Nevada, MO, to Wayne and Nanabel (Bare) Doolin. He was married to Carolyn Sue Norris on August 29, 1997, in Milo, MO. She survives of the home. Brad was retired from a career at 3M. He was a member of the Hume Methodist Church and the Nevada Elks Lodge.

In addition to his wife, Carolyn, he is survived by his children, Daron Burt, Richards, MO, Misty Manes, Clever, MO, Jamei Harris, Hume, MO, and Jennifer Lanham, Lenexa, KS; a brother, Scotty Doolin, Pomme de Terre, MO; a sister Janice Doolin, Milo, MO; 13 grandchildren—Brylee Manes, Kiersten Manes, Makinzi Harris, Kennidi Harris, Abby Harris, Nate Harris, Jace Lee, Spencer Lanham, Sydney Lanham, Hayden Burt, Dezmond Burt, Trevor Manes, Megg Doyle; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Nanabel Doolin; and his grandparents, Calvin & Mae Bare, Frank and Beatrice Doolin.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the Hume Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Brad’s memory to Vernon County Cancer Relief, Gentiva Hospice or the Hume Methodist Church, in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
