State Farm Athlete of the week Jake Chandler

We are pleased to announce the first State Farm Athlete of the week for the 24-25 school year, Jake Chandler. Jake is a junior at Butler High School and he participates in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was nominated by Head Coach Gregg Webb after Butler’s first game vs North Platte.

Jake had a phenomenal game. He ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, had 2 interceptions, 2 other receiving touchdowns, and 5 tackles all in a quarter and a half as he had to leave the game due to injury.

When we asked Jake to tell us something he thought he has learned from playing high school sports that he could apply later in life he stated, “you learn to work with others and become a leader.

You have to learn good communication skills which can help you later in life.” When we asked him what the most difficult part of being a student athlete is he stated, “keeping your mind right and getting good grades while learning to work with others and helping your teammates get better”. We then asked him what he feels it takes to become an elite athlete.

He stated “you have to go 100% at all times. And you have to put in extra work on your own outside of practice. It takes putting in the extra work when others don’t”. Jake’s future plans include going to college where he hopes to continue his football career and possibly major in sports management.

Standoff situation in Butler ends peacefully

On 9/6/2024, at approximately 1300hrs deputies from the Sheriff’s Office arrived at the 100 block of south Fulton in Butler Mo, in reference to a court ordered 96 hour hold. As the deputies attempted to take the subject of the court order in custody, he locked himself in a shed on the property.

Deputies were advised he was potentially armed with knives and had poured gasoline on himself. He reportedly threatened to burn the shed down with himself inside.

Additional units arrived to assist along with two Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiators. After a short time negotiators were able to talk the subject out of the shed without incident.

The Butler Fire Department was put on standby as a precaution. Bates County EMS was called to the scene where they transported the subject to hospital where they can determine the next step in the medical care for this subject.

Fence issue now further complicated

During the August 20 Butler city council meeting, Brandon and Brianne Golliday, owners of the Modern Brick event space located at 1201 Paradise Lane asked for a variance regarding a fence they were installing. Since the fence, as it was partially constructed, was in violation of city code they were asked to stop construction until they could meet with the planning commission to ask for a variance.

However, it was announced during the council meeting on Tuesday that the fence construction had been ongoing despite the request, as the Gollidays had promised a customer renting the space that the fence would be completed.

No action was taken however, the Gollidays are still on the agenda for the upcoming planning commission meeting; pending a thumbs up from the commission it will then be passed to the city council for approval or not.

Additional details will be forthcoming in the News-Shopper and at MidAmericaLive.com.
