Butler Bears Football gets back on winning track tonight...

The Butler Bears Football Team got back on the winning track tonight with a dominate 54-12 victory over the St. Mary's Academy Crusaders.

Butler played very well on both sides of the ball and was led on offense by Junior Quarter back Kellen Long and Senior Running back Xavier Wisdom who both had a huge night on the ground and scored multiple rushing touchdowns.

The bears were solid on the defensive and offensive line and led the contest 46-0 at halftime. Butler will move to 2-2 on the early season and will travel to Adrian to play the rival Blackhawks next Friday night.

El Dorado Springs woman seriously injured in Cedar County crash

On Friday September 20th around 1:35 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cedar County along with the Cedar County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle crash on Highway BB 6 miles south of El Dorado Springs.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the east bund 2010 Honda Civic driven by a 65 year old Stacy N. Julian of El Dorado Springs, Missouri traveled off the south side of the roadway, ramped off a field entrance, became airborne, landed in a ditch, returned to the roadway again, and came to rest in a ditch.

Stacy N. Julian sustained serious injuries and was transported by Vernon County EMS to Freeman West Joplin.

Obituary - Nathan Charles Bland

Nathan Charles Bland, age 25, La Cygne, Kansas passed away Sunday, September 15, 2024. He was born on July 15, 1999 in Fort Scott, Kansas the son of Darron and Teri Hartford Bland. He worked in the construction industry. He was a talented artist and enjoyed gaming and fishing. 

He is survived by his mother, Teri Bland and Jerry Bearce, father, Darron Bland, and four brothers, Austin Bland, Daniel Bland, Darren Bland, and Jaden Gibbs.

Funeral service will be 11 am Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, La Cygne Chapel. Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Nathan Bland Memorial to defray funeral costs. Online condolences can be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com.

Obituary - Linda Sue (Sexton) Finney

Linda Sue (Sexton) Finney age 76 of Freeman, Missouri departed this life Thursday, September 19, 2024 at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri.

Early morning visitors today for the Butler Elementary School 

Early this morning members of the Butler Lady Bears Volleyball Team along with member of the Butler Bears Football Team and cheerleaders greeted students at the Elementary School this morning as they walked into school.

We would like to wish the Butler Bears Football Team best of luck tonight at home against St. Mary's. Also best wishes this weekend as the the Lady Bears Volleyball Team plays in the Lamar Tiger Classic.

Once a bear always a bear!




Obituary - Shirley Lee Jean Baxter

Shirley Lee Jean Baxter, 91, Milo, MO, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, MO. Shirley was born in Clinton, MO on January 21, 1933, to Melvin Luther and Lorine (Porter) Kessler. She was married to Dean Baxter on August 18, 1951 and he survives of the home.

Shirley attended school at Greenwood School in Kansas City, Jr. High in Bell Gardens, CA, and High School at Central High School in Kansas City. She worked at Chandler Show Store, Dixie Shop, and Stowe Hardware, all in Kansas City. She also worked at Farm & Home, Dr. Griswold’s office and Moore-Few Nursing Home in Nevada, MO. Shirley was the first administrator of Moore-Few Nursing Home. She worked at three other nursing homes in Missouri as well. Shirley retired from the Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Bureau on October 1, 1999, after working as Administrative Assistant for two bureau managers for 12 years. In the Village of Milo, she served as Finance Officer for 15 years.

Originally moving to Nevada in 1958 to a farm South of Nevada on BB highway, they then moved in 1984 to Jefferson City until 2001, when they moved back to Milo, MO and built a new home there.

Shirley was involved in numerous organizations: she was a member of the Business & Professional Women for over 40 years, held several local and state offices, and was the Woman of the Year; a member of International Association of Administrative Professionals since 1992 to two different chapters: Ink & Quill, Jefferson City and Route 66, Joplin, and held several chapter offices, helping with 3 Missouri Division meetings; served as president of the Missouri Square and Round Dance Association; served also on the board of Missouri Round Dance Association; was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Nevada, MO; served as an ombudsman at Moore-Few Nursing Home; and worked at numerous elections.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 73 years, Dean Baxter; four children, Mike Baxter, Sheldon, MO, Mark Baxter, Minnesota, Melvin Baxter, Florida, and Daniel Baxter, Nevada, MO; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne Achey, and one brother, Melvin L. Kessler.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, Nevada, with Pastor Laura Agee officiating. Those who wish may contribute in Shirley’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Committal will follow in the Sheldon Cemetery at a later date.

Shed fire this morning in Butler

Around 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning the Butler Fire Department along with Butler Police Department responded to a report of a shed fire at 119 S. Broadway Street in Butler.

When crews arrived on scene the shed was fully engulfed in flames but no one was said to be injured in this fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation at this time.
