Butler JH lady bears volleyball has tough night in Lamar

The Butler JH lady bears volleyball team hit the road and traveled to Lamar tonight to take on the lady tigers. The B Team and A Team both lost to the lady tigers in two sets! 

Butler will look to rebound as they will host a Tri-Match against the Nevada and Metro Academy on October 7th!

Obituary - Orville Eugene Nichols

Orville Eugene Nichols was born August 24, 1945, near Appleton City, MO, the 8th of 10 children born to Orville and Bertha (Barker) Nichols. He departed this life on Friday, September 27, in St. Peters, MO, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Eugene married Nancy Kreissler on August 19, 1966, and to this union, two children were born: Kenneth Nichols of Chesterfield, MO; and Jill (Mecey) of Saint Charles, MO. Eugene was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton City and later transferred his membership to Zion Lutheran Church, Harvester, where he remained a member until his death.

Eugene, who was also known as Nick to friends and co-workers, was a skilled worker who could build or repair just about anything. He and Nancy were a perfect match, because she would come up with the ideas, and he would do all the work—always to perfection! He served a brief stint in the Air Force, and then worked for Ford assembly plant, Boeing, and Peabody Power Mine. After the mine closed, he worked in construction and raised hogs and chocolate labs. He later became the maintenance supervisor for the Appleton City R-II school district, where he worked until his retirement in 2003.

Eugene and Nancy moved to Saint Charles later that year so they could enjoy their retirement with their children and grandchildren. Much of Eugene and Nancy’s married life was spent on bleachers, first cheering on their own children and then their grandchildren in all of their various activities. They also were fortunate to be able to travel to many places in the United States, usually with brother and sister-in-law Ronnie and Kristine Parks; and a special trip to Europe to visit their exchange students from Sweden and their families.

Eugene was a much-loved neighbor who enjoyed helping others, and he was always appreciative of the help and friendship of his neighbors on Langfield Court. He had the reputation of being able to do just about anything and to compete in any sport he attempted. It would be an insult to him if we didn’t mention that as a middle-school basketball player, he scored 40 of his team’s 42 game points; and when Nancy took a summer of tennis lessons in college, she challenged him to a tennis match. He’d never held a racket in his life, but he beat her soundly, and they never played again. His other hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, and watching sports, especially the Missouri Tigers and the Saint Louis Cardinals.

Those who remain to mourn his passing are wife Nancy of the home, son Kenneth and daughter-in-law Michelle Nichols of Chesterfield, MO; daughter Jill and son-in-law Greg Mecey of Saint Charles; grandchildren Kelea (Kaleb) Kinsman of Willard MO; Cole, Reed and Morgan Nichols of Chesterfield, MO; Drew Mecey of Denver, CO; Ryan and Kyle Mecey of Saint Charles; great grandchildren Elija, Owen, and Chase Maddux; and Lily and Ezrick Kinsman, all of Willard, MO. Sisters Ellen (Kent) Higgins; Beulah Conner; Geraldine (Bill) Brownsberger; and Connie Mott, all of Appleton City, MO; and lifetime friend Mike (Dee) Bowles of Arizona. Also surviving are his two Swedish “sons,” Carl-Magnus (Johanna) Unell and Jonas (Shellie) Unell. Carl and Jonas arrived as exchange students but soon because honorary lifetime members of our family. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers Glen and Wilbur Nichols; sisters Doris Nichols, Marie Brown, and Delores Bracher. Numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends from both sides of the state survive to laugh and tell stories about one of their best friends ever.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Red Cross to honor the those who donate blood to benefit others. This selfless act blessed us with 10 more years to enjoy our loved one.

Obituary - Eloyce Loree Cossins

Eloyce Loree (Finch) Cossins, (81), passed away on September 29, 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri. She married Lewis Arvin Cossins on May 8, 1960, and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage until his passing. She was born on February 26, 1943 at her grandparents’ home in rural Worth County, Missouri, on her grandmother’s birthday. 

Her childhood was spent on the family farm near Sheridan, Missouri, while her adult years were enjoyed in a variety of Missouri towns as her husband’s service with the Missouri State Highway Patrol moved them about the state. She worked a variety of jobs throughout her working years including grocery checker, bookkeeper, and city treasurer for Platte City, Missouri, but her real love was taking care of her family, making sure everyone was cozy and well-fed. She kept a list of each person’s favorite foods, and when you visited, you can bet your favorites were there and in quantity.

Eloyce is survived by her three children: Robert (Denise) of Spring Hill, Kansas, their five children, and seven grandchildren, with two more on the way; Teresa (Glenn) Fulk of Platte City, Missouri, their seven children, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; and Michael (Cindye) of Wildwood, Missouri, and their four children. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Drs. Reggie and Chris Finch of Pearland, Texas; sister-in-law Etta Masoud of Savannah, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arvin; her parents, Charles Earl Finch and O. Marseilene Finch; and her older brother and sister-in-law Robert & Vianna Finch.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

Archie JH Whirlwind football team wins nail biter

The Archie JH Whirlwind football team got a big win in a super close game tonight as they defeated the Lockwood Tigers 38-34.

Nevada Tigers JV gets win tonight against East Newton

The Nevada JV football team got the win on the road tonight over the East Newton Patriots 50-12 tonight. The varsity Nevada tigers beat East Newton 28-7 on Friday! Enjoy some photos from the tigers win tonight below:

Butler lady bears varsity volleyball sweeps Stockton on the road tonight

The Butler lady bears varsity volleyball team hit the road tonight to take on the Stockton lady tigers in volleyball action. 

The lady bears are coming off a big win over the undefeated Versailles lady tigers 3-1 last week in Butler. 

Butler was able to come out tonight and sweep the lady tigers tonight with set scores of 26-24, 25-13 and 25-18. 

The lady bears will move to 13-3-1 on the year and travel to Prairie View for a match up with the lady bison on October 3rd. Enjoy some photos from the win tonight in Stockton below:

Cass County Sheriff's Office has a busy evening Saturday

Last night around 11 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Apprehension Unit successfully grappled a vehicle. The driver was an attempted homicide and kidnapping suspect out of Lee’s Summit.

The suspect was located traveling into Johnson County, MO via 50 Highway from Jackson County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop, with Johnson County deputies assisting, but the vehicle failed to yield.

Johnson County deputies deployed stop sticks that deflated the tires, with the Warrensburg Police Department assisting in additional stop stick deployments as the suspect vehicle entered Warrensburg. The suspect continued driving on the deflated tires, failing to yield and traveled back to US 50 Highway, westbound.

During the pursuit, the vehicle rammed a deputy's patrol vehicle. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was requested to use the Grappler to stop the vehicle.

Reports indicated the suspect was armed with a handgun, and a juvenile was inside the vehicle.

The vehicle traveled to the 1800 block of NW US 50 Highway, driving on rims. Cass County Sheriff’s Office deployed the Grappler.

The vehicle lost control and came to a stop. The juvenile was secured, and the suspect surrendered to law enforcement. The suspect was taken into custody.

On Saturday night, 09/28/2024 at 11:37PM the Bates County Coroner’s Office was requested by Adrian Police to an address in the 200 block of East 8th Street, Adrian in regards to a shooting. One person is deceased as a result of this incident.

The decedent is identified as 41 year-old John McMurphy of Adrian. A death investigation is underway in cooperation with Adrian Police.
