School bus fire in rural Linn County Kansas

Thirty kids and three adults are safe after their school bus caught fire while returning from a field trip on Thursday.

The incident happened at around 2:50 p.m. on U.S. 69 near Prescott in southeastern Linn County.

The Kansas State Highway Patrol reports the bus was heading south when a rear driver's side tire blew. The 44-year-old driver tried to "limp" the bus to a safe stopping location, but a fire started where the tire blew. The fire then consumed the school bus. All occupants were able to exit safely. No one was hurt.

Fort Scott USD 234 said the 8th graders were returning from a field trip in Kansas City when the incident happened. The bus is a total loss.

Danny Joe Spaulding, age 67, of Rich Hill, Missouri passed away Friday, September 27, 2024 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born August 14, 1957 to Raymond Avery and Mary Josephine Woolf Spaulding in Chillicothe, Missouri and then living his school years in Stanberry, Missouri. Danny often spoke fondly of times he would spend with his maternal grandparents on their farm and also spending summers with his Uncle Jim Woolf.

When Danny was nine, his dad taught him chords to play on an old flat top guitar and “just let him loose.” this began Danny’s “life-long” journey and love for playing and singing. At Christmas, while in the 8th grade, he received his first electric guitar. About 17, he set his mind to hit the road to become a “professional musician” touring and spending most his life playing music all over the country. Danny eventually played lead guitar, pedal steel guitar, bass, drums and vocal. His love and passion for music was often shared along side his brother, Scotty Ray, both becoming members of the Academy of Country Music Association. Danny leaves behind many life-long musician friends that he met along the way.

Danny is survived by his wife, Terri “Lynn” Coonce Spaulding; a brother, Mick; his children, D.J., Dustin, Raeleen and Kaetlin; bonus children, Asa, Summer and Ashley; 29 grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Scotty.
