Arrest made overnight in Butler

Around 3:00 a.m. this morning a Butler Police Officer was patrolling when he noticed a SUV sitting behind the on County Mart Building on Ft. Scott Street. 

After officers made contact with the driver it was determined that he had several traffic warrants out of Polk County and Clay County.

The driver who was identified as 22 year old Trevon Miller of Springfield, Missouri was taken into custody. He was booked into the Bates County Jail in Butler and he is currently listed as bondable.

Obituary - Bonnie Lou Smith

Bonnie Lou Smith, age 96, Pleasanton, Kansas passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Funeral service will be 1:30 pm Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Pleasanton, Kansas. 

Burial will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday, January 7, at the Pleasanton Chapel.

Arrest made after pursuit in Belton

Today around 12:45 p.m., a Cass County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a driver on traffic related charges in Belton.

The driver then began fleeing for a few moments before getting out of the vehicle on Mark Ln.

He fled on foot until Belton Police found him at Monroe Ave. and N. Cleveland Ave. Deputies arrested the suspect and he’s currently at the Cass County Jail with charges pending.

Obituary - Errol F. Durbin (Skip)

Errol F. Durbin (Skip) , 81, Harrisonville, MO, passed away Monday, December 30, 2024 at his Grand-daughters home in Belton, MO. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 7 , 2025 at Dickey Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Visitation will be at 1pm, Services starting at 2pm. Burial at Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville to follow.

Errol was born April 23, 1943 in Fort Scott, KS, a son of Joseph Durbin, Sr. and Katherine E. (Noggle) Durbin. He Graduated from Harrisonville High School Class of 1961. He went into the Army for two years and then onto College at Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. After running and owning funeral homes he decided to change his career path and got a degree in Aviation Science and started work for the FAA in which he retired. He worked very hard to provide for his family well by investing and building in real estate.

On February 14, 1967, Errol was united in marriage to Joanne Griffith in the Christian Church in Enid, OK. To this union, they had one daughter, Brenda Michelle.

Errol was a charter member of the Church on the Rock in Harrisonville. He was a former Commander of the American Legion Post 42, Started the Sons of the American Revolution in Cass County, Member of the Honor Guard, Former President of the Cass County Genealogy Society. The one thing that was most important to Errol was his family. He poured his time into his daughter, granddaughter and great-grandchildren. He was the life of the party, never knew a stranger and was well connected because of the way he made people feel. Never a dull moment with him near.

Errol was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Cox and her husband, Craig; granddaughter, Brooke Winfrey, and her husband, Andrew; five great-grandchildren, Emma Wagner and her husband Bryce, Parker, Grant, Hudson, Beckham and one great great grandson, Beau.

Celebrating Teresa Shobe’s Retirement from Bates County Memorial Hospital

On December 31, 2024, Teresa Shobe retired after nearly a decade of dedicated service to Bates County Memorial Hospital. Over the course of her 9 years, 6 months, and 14 days with BCMH, Teresa made an indelible mark in the housekeeping department, where she served with excellence and a constant positive attitude.

Known for her bright smile and infectious, fun-loving spirit, Teresa’s presence will be deeply missed by everyone here at BCMH. She brought cheer to everyone she encountered, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and hard work.

In retirement, Teresa is excited to dedicate more time to her favorite hobbies, including traveling with friends, painting (one of her pieces is proudly displayed at High Street Family Care Clinic) and spiritual dance at Butler Presbyterian Church. She is also looking forward to spending more time with her beloved grandchildren.

On her final day, Teresa was presented with a bouquet of roses and lilies in appreciation for her years of service. We wish Teresa all the best in her retirement and thank her for her unwavering commitment to our team and our community.

Obituary - Bobby Hines

Bobby Hines, age 84 of Milo, Missouri passed away December 31st at Medicalodge Nursing Home in Nevada. He was born October 5, 1940 in Martin, South Dakota to George and Francis (Barto) Hines. During his childhood, the family lived in Southern California, Nebraska and Brentwood, AR, before settling in Lamar, Missouri.

Bob was united in marriage to Loretta J. Fite on October 14, 1960 at the Assembly of God Church in Lamar, Missouri. Following their marriage, Bob and Loretta lived in Lamar and Stockton before relocating to Milo in 1972. Bob and Loretta had two children, Ronnette and Kevin. Bob worked for Lawn Boy and O’Sullivan in Lamar and he helped construct the Stockton Dam. After moving to Milo, he worked as a custodian at Bryan School and later at the Fram plant in Nevada prior to his retirement.

As a young man, Bob was very athletic and a local baseball pitching talent. He also played golf and tennis. Bob enjoyed fishing, repairing small engines and having coffee with friends. He also enjoyed cracking and selling pecans each fall that were grown on Kevin and Ronnette’s farm.

Survivors include, a daughter, Ronnette (Joe) Wilson of Nevada, son Kevin Hines of Nevada and four grandchildren, Jessica (David) Sleezer of Olathe, Ks, Joshua Wilson of Kansas City, KS, Nathan Hines of Nevada, MO and Karla Hines of Nevada MO, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta, his parents, and his four brothers, Loy, Boyd, Maurice and Monty Hines.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday January 7, 2024 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Dennis Engelbrecht officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 on Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Milo Cemetery.

Obituary - Dale Russell

Dale Russell, 87 of Overland Park, Kansas passed away December 30, 2024 at Garden Terrace of Overland Park. 

 A visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 10:00 am Saturday, January 4, 2024 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (816-657-4400). Memorial services will follow at 10:00 am Saturday, also at the chapel. Inurnment will take place in Jingo Cemetery.

Obituary - Lyric Maeve Hyder

Lyric Maeve Hyder, infant daughter of Jason Lee Hyder and Rachel Leone Cox, was born on August 27, 2024 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, KS and left this world unexpectedly in her mother’s arms on December 30, 2024 at her home in Nevada, MO.

Since the beginning, Lyric has been a fighter. At just 18 weeks gestation it was discovered that Lyric had gastroschisis, meaning her organs were growing outside of her tummy. Despite that setback she grew well. At 32 weeks things began getting more complicated and she was born at 11:47 a.m. weighing 3 pounds 13 ounces and was 16¼ inches long. Despite being born two months early, Lyric thrived in the NICU. Anyone that took care of her was astounded by how well she jumped each hurdle daily. Lyric’s tiny organs were placed in a silo that allowed gravity to pull them back inside her belly. At one week old, Lyric went through her first surgery, and she proved again just how strong and how much of a fighter she was. This surgery was to close the hole in her belly left from gastroschisis. Lyric was 3½ weeks old before she got her first feeding of milk. Until that point she was given TPN for nutrients through a PIC line. Once she got the good stuff she was adamant about every feeding and made sure everyone knew when she was hungry. At one month old Lyric had surpassed all the expectations of the NICU and got to go home to meet all of her family for the first time.

Anyone that knew Lyric loved her instantly. She had the sweetest spirit and the most infectious smile. She was a joy to hold and feed, and hearing her baby coos made it that much more enjoyable. Lyric thrived at home with her family. She continued to grow and loved snuggles and bright colors, but her favorite pastime was eating. That was proven by how much she weighed at her last appointment. Lyric was 7 pound 8 ounces, over double her birth weight.

On December 2nd Lyric endured her second surgery. This surgery was to repair an umbilical hernia, just as before she made it through like a champ. Lyric has often been referred to as our little warrior because every day she proved how strong she was.

In her four short months here on earth with us, she taught us strength and also humbled us. She taught us to live for each day, because tomorrow isn’t expected. She humbled us with her strength through all of her pain. She was the happiest baby. To know Lyric is to know love, and our family will never be the same without her, but, we will continue to remember her and keep her in our hearts daily.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her siblings, Patsy Hyder, Lane Hyder, and Layla Hyder; grandparents, Tim and Stephanie Hyder, Hume, MO, David and Tricia Cox, Richards, MO, and Connie and John Haney, Nevada; great-grandparents, Patricia Middleton, Metz, MO, Phyllis & Ron Bakert, Marshall, MO, and Janet & Greg Finkle, Hume; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Danny Middleton, Denny Hyder, and Emily Middleton, a cousin, Matthew Lawrence, and an uncle, Dylan Giffin.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Ferry Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Private burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery, Nevada. The family will receive friends at 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
