Nick Ray Flater, age 73 of Rich Hill, Missouri died Sunday, December 29, 2024 at his home. He was born March 10, 1951 to Arthur Christian and Lillian Ruth Luchtenburg Flater in Waterloo, Iowa.

Nick, one of five children, completed his education at Grundy Center, Iowa. After graduating in 1969, he attended Iowa State University. His strong sense of duty led him to join the United States Marine Corps in 1970, where he served with valor and distinction during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1973. On June 26, 1971, Nick married Deanna Rosalyn Bradley and to this union two sons were born.

Professionally, Nick exhibited a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, engaging in various ventures including Resource One, Flater Enterprises and Yellow Freight while farming. Nick’s adoration for the outdoors shone through with his love of hunting and fishing. His patriotism and deep fascination with military history often found him in camaraderie with fellow veterans. However his most profound joy was found in the presence of his family, with whom he shared an unshakable bond, which was anchored by his great devotion to God. Nick’s unwavering faith, dedicated service, support of his community, and love of family will forever inspire those who were fortunate to know him.

Beware of ‘Brushing’ Scam

A recent scam has been showing up in many states. A "brushing" scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or other company. Examples of gifts include, rings, bracelets, necklaces, Bluetooth speaker, etc. The gift will have the recipient’s address, but not include the sender's information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift.

Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.

The gift can be kept or thrown away, but the QR code should NOT be scanned for any reason. QR code scams are nothing new. These scams show up in all places, including parking meters.

Inform your family members about the scam and avoid scanning any unknown QR codes included in the package.

Inclement weather route update to all Countywide Disposal customers

Commercial customers: We are getting the commercial stops that we can get to. At this point, I-49 is not in great shape going northbound.

Rural route customers: All rural routes are cancelled for this week. We will be picking up 2 weeks worth of trash this coming week so please set out all the extra you may have.

City of Adrian and East Lynne customers: Your route has been postponed until next Monday. We will pick up your trash next week on Monday and again on Friday.

I want to personally thank all of our customers for the understanding and respect you’ve all shown us this week. This is the 1st time we’ve ever had to cancel multiple days worth of routes, but we look forward to servicing you all next week and picking up a record amount of trash.

Have a safe day and weekend.

It’s cold out here!

This miniature snowman on the Bates county courthouse lawn seems to be making a plea for better weather and it appears wishes may be granted as we’ll see highs above freezing with minimal chances of precipitation the next couple of days.
