RV discussion tops Adrian aldermen meeting last night

The monthly meeting of the Adrian board of alderman was dominated with a discussion about people using RV's as living space on residential property. While the current ordinance states that RV's on residential property cannot be occupied more than 30 days per calendar year, a change was proposed by the planning and zoning board that would have modified that verbiage.

While the proposed change was thought to better the situation, it was met with opposition led by alderman Jeremy Bridges who said he thought it would be "overreach" and "would cause problems for those who simply have an RV parked on their property" and thus, a long discussion ensued.

It was decided to kick the proposal back to the zoning board for review and will likely be revisited during the upcoming February aldermen session.

Also discussed was parking on main street as Mayor Matt Cunningham pointed out that while there is open parking behind the Wine Journal, sometimes it isn't enough. At this juncture the aldermen are looking at adding additional spots along Max Stevens street near the railroad tracks.

The Adrian board of aldermen meet on the second Monday of the month, 7 pm, at city hall. The public is highly encouraged to attend.

SCAM ALERT: Jury Duty Scam

From the Johnson County Sheriff's Office

We've been informed of an attempted jury duty scam. Here’s what happened:
This morning, someone reported receiving 11 calls, 9 voicemails, and a text from an impersonator claiming to be a “Johnson County deputy.” The scammer falsely stated that a warrant was issued for their arrest due to a missed jury duty on 12-23-24. They demanded a $35,000 bond, payable by depositing money into a kiosk, and threatened arrest for stepping onto government property. They also instructed the individual not to tell anyone.
If you receive a call like this:
- Do NOT pay any money.
- Report it immediately to authorities.
Let’s keep our community safe by spreading the word.

Harrisonville named T-Mobile Hometown Grant Recipient

T-Mobile has announced the City of Harrisonville as one of its latest 25 Hometown Grant recipients, who will each receive up to $50,000 in funding from T-Mobile to kickstart local development projects that enhance and strengthen their communities.

Harrisonville’s project, the Community Connections Path, creates accessibility, exploration and connection within City Park by providing a safe path for walking where none currently exists and fostering community connections through physical connection within the park and throughout the community.

The project expands the sidewalks inside the park by .3 miles to provide accessibility to many areas in the park including Lake Luna, the amphitheater, fishing docks, restrooms and seating/shaded areas.

"I've always envisioned creating a walking loop in City Park for the community, along with a scenic walkway by the lake,” Parks and Recreation Director Grant Purkey said. “Thanks to the T-Mobile Hometown Grant, we can now make both of these ideas a reality."

The project forms a safe, physical connection between key areas within City Park for all mobilities and ages where none currently exists, promoting true inclusion and shared spaces. The path will also attract members of the public to Harrisonville parks and the Historic Harrisonville Square, and the overlook portion of the path will attract new visitors to City Park and Lake Luna.

“The City of Harrisonville prides itself on serving our community with a lens that seeks to meet the needs of our entire demographic,” Mayor Mike Zaring said. “Projects like the Community Connections Path, made possible by the T-Mobile Hometown Grant, allow us to do just that; meeting the needs of the young and the old, of those who call our wonderful community home and those who are just here for a quick visit.”

The City of Harrisonville believes the Community Connections Path aligns with T-Mobile’s commitment to be a force for good, championing equitable opportunities and empowering communities toward sustainable futures.

T-Mobile has provided more than $15 million in Hometown Grants to 350 communities across 48 states and one U.S. territory since kicking off its five-year commitment to small towns and rural communities in April 2021. To date, Hometown Grants has created more than 86,000 volunteer hours, rallying people to come together and uplift their towns.

T-Mobile partners with Main Street America to administer the grant program and assess applications based on their level of detail, community impact, feasibility and other considerations.
