Higher utility bills a temporary issue

During the Tuesday night Butler city council meeting a discussion was held regarding a recent spike in utility bills as residents have expressed discontent regarding the uptick in prices.

Butler City Administrator Corey Snead explained to the those present that power is purchased based on a monthly estimate of usage and the January cold snap increased demand and now it's time to 'catch up' so to speak.

Snead wants to let everyone know that the cold snap happened at the same time as the estimate was paid, which likely will result in a higher/slightly higher bill again this month.

In the discussion it was noted that a spike in billing typically happens a couple times a year, during extremely cold and hot snaps as well.

Berni was born on March 11, 1957, to Clayton and Geraldine (Walsh) Calder in Seattle, Washington. She married Jerry Hill on June 25, 1994, then together they moved to Adrian, MO. Berni worked many years as a waitress at the Homestead House Restaurant in Adrian where she developed many friendships. She never met a stranger and was always willing to give a hug. She enjoyed traveling to Arizona to see her sister, Meggie. Berni's greatest accomplishment and love was for her family, especially her grandchildren, with whom she spent countless hours with whenever possible.

Berni is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Maureen Calder. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Hill; her children: Thomas (Angie) Holmes, Sarah (Michael) Britt, Gerry (Matthew) Diehl, and Matthew Hill; her grandchildren: Emma, William, Camren, Brantly, Jillian, Aiden, and Adaline; and her sister, Margaret (Bill) Young.

Christopher James Embrey, known by his friends and family as “Smiley,” was born on Saturday, January 17th, 1970, in Butler, Missouri, to Rebecca Louise (Hon) (Embrey) Heckadon and Sam Gene Embrey. After years of battling heart disease and congestive heart failure, Chris passed away at Lee Summitt Medical Center on January 21st, 2025.

Chris attended and graduated from Butler High School in 1988. After graduation in 1988, he joined the US Navy, studying communications and working as a machinist's mate. Chris was stationed on the USS Constellation ship, which was later decommissioned. Christopher achieved the rank of E-4 Petty Officer Third Class in the Navy. During his time in the Navy, Chris served his country and, in the process, visited different countries and many other places in the States. Upon finishing his active duty in 1992 and discharging from the Navy, Chris moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was stationed, back to Butler, Missouri, with his two children. Later, Chris moved to Rich Hill, Missouri, where his children attended and graduated from school.

He was known for being able to do a little bit of everything and “knowing enough to be dangerous.” Chris loved watching NASCAR and dirt track racing with his children and watching the Chiefs play. He also loved arrowhead hunting with his children and friends. Chris loved listening to many different rock music genres, and you could always catch him playing his music as loud as possible. He was also known for always having a smile on his face, no matter what. Chris bought a plot of land in 2019 and, from there, built his home from the ground up. He spent his remaining free time working on his house and working on the dream of rebuilding his Ford Ranchero.

Road conditions worse further north

If you have to be on the roadways this morning, adjust to the icy conditions and give yourself plenty of time, delay travel if possible. Bridges and overpasses are especially slick in the metro this morning.

Check the https://traveler.modot.org and https://www.kcscout.net before you head out. Watch out for our crews who are out working this morning.
