Obituary - Dr. Rosemary Fowler-Larsen

Dr. Rosemary Fowler-Larsen, 86, Nevada, MO, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2025, at her home in Nevada. Rosemary was born July 9, 1938, in Pittsburg, TX to Bruce and Mattie Lou (Tillery) Garrett, the older of four siblings. She grew up in East Texas and graduated from Daingerfield High School in May 1956. Rosemary accepted Christ as her Savior as a child, believed the Bible and has a strong Christian faith throughout her life. Rosemary married Lloyd Leon Fowler in 1963 in Breckenridge, TX. God blessed this marriage with a daughter, Mary Lou (Fowler) Myers. In 1977, Rosemary and her daughter moved to Nevada, MO. Rosemary began teaching at Cottey College and her daughter entered middle school. Several years after moving to Nevada Rosemary met Leonard E. Larsen and they were married on May 9, 1986, in Miami, OK. They loved and enjoyed each other so very much and spent most of their free time together. They were soul mates and enjoyed gardening, canning, fishing, hunting and going to Texas to visit her mother. Leonard preceded her in death in 2002.  

     Upon graduation from high school Rosemary began her college education in June 1956, graduating from East Texas State University in May 1959 with degrees in chemistry and mathematics. In the fall of 1959, she began teaching laboratory chemistry courses at the University of Texas at Arlington and pursuing a master’s degree in chemistry. In May 1962 she graduated with a Master of Science degree in organic and biochemistry from Texas Woman’s University. She completed the Ph.D. degree in radiation and organic chemistry from Texas Woman’s University in 1968. As a graduate student, she and her daughter were supported by research stipends from the Robert A. Welch Foundation of Houston, TX. After completing the doctorate, she received a Robert A. Welch Postdoctoral Fellowship for additional research in “thiophenes” at Texas Woman’s University. She enjoyed research and continued research throughout her academic career.

     Dr. Fowler taught college chemistry for several years in Texas and Oklahoma prior to moving to Nevada, MO. She taught chemistry at Cottey College for 33 years. She received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1992, the Cottey College Master Educator Award in 2007, and the Honorary Cottey Alumnae Citation in 2007. As a member of the Cottey faculty, she served at various times as the chair of the Science-Mathematic Division, the chair of the Technology Committee, and as Academic Safety Officer. In the summer of 2011, she resumed teaching chemistry as an adjunct at Crowder College in Nevada. Throughout her long teaching career Dr. Fowler maintained contact with many of her former students. She enjoyed teaching her students and helping others throughout her life. Dr. Fowler was an active member in the Missouri Academy of Science, was State President of Missouri Academy of Science from 1999-2000. In 2005 she was elected as a Fellow of the Missouri Academy of Science. She frequently presented research papers along with her students at the annual meetings of the MAS. Also, she was an active member of the American Chemical Society for more than 50 years. She was twice Chair of the local MO-KAN-OK section of the American Chemical Society. Also, She attended the regional and national ACS meetings and presented numerous times at the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education during her tenure at Cottey College.

     Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband Leonard in 2002, her mother, one sister, Virginia (Garrett) Oswalt, and two brothers, Randy Wayne Garrett and Ray Everett Garrett.

     She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Myers; granddaughter, Nicole Georges; great-grandchildren, Peyton Dunn, Adam Dunn Jr., and Oscar Georges; sister-in-law, Marjorie Sue Garrett; nieces, Merri Dennis (Jay), Judy Kelly (Wade), and Kristina Hays (R.J.); and nephews, Stephen Johnson and Mark Gonzalez.

     Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm, Monday, April 14, 2025, at Ferry Funeral Home.  There will be a private family inurnment at White Cemetery, in Richards, MO 

     Memorial contributions are suggested to the Rosemary Fowler Science Equipment Fund (Cottey College) c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Obituary - Richard Lee Keaton

Richard Lee Keaton, age 90, of Lane, Kansas passed away Saturday, April 5, 2025. He was born on January 29, 1935 in Harrison, Arkansas the son of Kenneth and Clara Richards Keaton. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Joyce Gilchrist on June 4, 1955. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2025. After retiring from the roofing business he became a full time rancher. He had worked for the Florida Highway Patrol, was a pilot and member of the civil air patrol. He was Ambassador for God #1 and a member of the Assembly of God in Paola, Kansas. Richard is survived by two sons, Steven Keaton and wife Kathryn, and Richard Keaton Jr. and wife Angie, two daughters, Susan Arbuckle and husband Daryl, and Anna Marie Woodhead, thirteen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 12 noon Friday, April 11, 2025 at the Schneider Funeral Home, La Cygne Chapel. Burial will be in the Wait Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 am to service time at the La Cygne Chapel.  Everyone is invited to the Wagon Wheel after the graveside for food and fellowship.  Online condolences can be left at www.schneiderfunerals.com.

Obituary - Steven Michael Cohee

Steven Michael Cohee age 68 of Pleasant Hill, Missouri departed this life Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at Saint Luke's Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri. 

Cremation with no services scheduled. 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Saint Luke's Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri and sent to Dickey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 432, Harrisonville, Missouri 64701.

Obituary - Dixie Louise (Jordan) Wright

Dixie Louise (Jordan) Wright, 89, of Garden City, was born October 8, 1935, in Cove Creek Missouri, the daughter of James Harold and Mamie (Garrison) Jordan. She died Tuesday, April 8, 2025, in her home surrounded by love and family.

On Oct. 19, 1963, Dixie was united in marriage to Edgar (Lee) Wright in Independence. 

Dixie worked at Western Auto in Kansas City and later employed as a nurse’s aid for many years, working at Cass Memorial Hospital, and Golden Years and ABC nursing homes. Dixie’s main job was raising her six children. Dixie was very proud that her and Ed had lived their Garden City home for 58 years, moving from Kansas City in 1967. She enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Dixie grew up in the Mayesburg and Ballard communities.

Dixie was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three brothers, Charles Dean Jordan, Jerry Franklin Jordan, and Ellis Dale Jordan and grandson Christopher Jordan Ambrose and great granddaughter Hayden Dixie Harris. 

Dixie is survived by; two sons, John Wright of the home, Bill Wright and wife, Lana, Harrisonville; four daughters, Linda VanCleave and husband, David, Springfield, Debra Strain, Billings, Cindy Bathgate and husband, Jeff, Garden City, Cathy Richardson and husband, Chris, Harrisonville; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Peggy Sue Jamison, Wellsville, Kan.; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2025 at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

A graveside service with interment will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2025 at Medford Cemetery, Holden, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Croix Hospice and sent to Dickey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 432, Harrisonville, Missouri 64701.

Good day for Eagles at Drexel track meet

Congratulations to the Junior High Girls and their success at the Drexel Track Meet.

Ellie McArthur placed 4th in the JH Girls Discus with a throw of 15.32 Meters.
Enzie Schaller placed 1st in the Girls 100M Hurdles with a time of 17.64 seconds. Enzie placed 1st in the 200M Dash with a time of 29.62 seconds. Enzie placed 2nd in the 100M Dash with a time of 13.97 seconds.
Ella Vaughn placed 6th in the 1600M Run with a time of 6:50.69.
With only 3 girls involved, they were able to place 5th as a team out of 11 schools!

Bates County Memorial Hospital welcomes Jody Welston

Suspicious activity reported west of Passaic

 


Bates County Sherriff's Detectives and Deputies are in the area around F Highway and 6001 Road. We are looking for an early 2000s model white single cab truck. Possibly a Chevrolet model. Truck will have numerous stickers in the back window.

The truck was backed up to a garage when the home owner approached them. The vehicle fled the area as the home owner approached.

But I know area fire departments like to know all the conditions - so there is some near-advisory criteria over both Kansas and Missouri today.
While the Relative Humidity values may not dip low enough to qualify, there's still gusty winds this afternoon; strongest in the green areas below. Winds are out of the NW.
